1. Get fucked.
2. I can't wait for the country's name to get changed officially to Aoteoroa.
Why? you ask. I'll fucking tell you. Alphabetically it comes before AUSTRALIA. So everywhere we would walk out in front of those waltzing matilda kangaroo-bangers. United Nations. Commonwealth Games. Olympics. Everywhere thats sorted by alphabetical order.
I also have no issue whatever with Maori language being used and promoted in this country. The fact that you and your ilk do reveals you for the racist piece of shit throwback you clearly are.
Don't let the door hit you on the arse on your way out.

I think you are both kinda the extremes that are part of the problem that’s developing with the use of te reo Maori. The flag debate was never as charged with “racism” as the naming of our country. As far as I remember Aoetearoa has always been used as the Maori name for New Zealand.
I think interchangeably using New Zealand or Aotearoa is fine, it will only make you angry if you choose it to; like Kia Ora etc.. If you haven’t noticed by now that government departments are all adopting a Maori name, then you’ve had your head in the sand. But, what is the motivation for being against it? NZ is the pairing of the Maori tribes and British colonialists under the treaty of waitangi. We are one but we’re not the same. Recognising Maori culture should still be important, lest we forget what happened the last time the Crown decided the Maori didn’t count anymore... land grabs and protests. Not a great look for a multicultural society is it?
The only thing I sort of disagree with, are those behind the current rise to prominence of aotearoa usage, the apologists, who are using aotearoa as an apology, because they believe colonialism (defined by them, as not only the seizure of Maori land but the supplanting of its culture with that of immigrant colonists) is the worst thing and the root cause behind all Maori suffering today. Maybe, but they are renaming things with a Maori name, because it’s almost as good as actually giving them the country back right? It’s just a bullshit attempt so they can live with their upper class privilege guilt and sleep at night I suppose, while the rest of us are told we must be racist for not using aotearoa. A huge step back from just giving people the freedom to interchange one name with the other. It’s now a politicised language.

I don't wish to appear critical, but assume you mean "our country's name"? Having more than one country called Aotearoa would seem problematical?

Akaroa flogs this near to death. For instance the petrol station pictured below. Still, as a Kawasaki rider said to me, "Akaroa is a great place to have fish and chips by the sea." He was right.

Or the Danish "nyt land" ("new land").
It is often said (by the English) that the label "nyt land" applies to England, dating back to the 9th-10th century when the Vikings made several peaceful visits (in search of some new land to farm). It's still a sensitive subject for some of the English (they still insist on calling them "invasions").
But not feeling so welcome, the Vikings of old abandoned England and cast their nets a little wider. Some made it as far as Spain and into the Mediterranean. What is not known anywhere near as well, is that some made it as far as the tip of South Africa. And then, aided by westerly winds, some were carried on across the Indian Ocean (ending up in NZ).
Now it's difficult to know exactly where they landed (because of lack of records). But much later, Danish archaeologists and historians realised that they had managed to travel this far. Simply because of some of the symbols they had left behind (like the peace symbol).
https://www.britannica.com/story/where-did-the-peace-sign-come-from
Now this is where I have a bone to pick with Encyclopedia Brittanica (and some other reputable English sources). Anyone with a Nordic bone in his (her / their / its) body can clearly see that this is an old Nordic symbol for a pitchfork. Forget any fanciful stories you might have heard about peace doves or the nuclear peace movement.
Peace Doves: It's well known that the Vikings carried crows on their long-ships (to help them with sighting of land), but all the pigeons and doves were eaten along the way. After days of eating fish, any small change in the diet was very welcome. Pieces of dove, maybe.
Nuclear Peace Movement: Again, yet another fanciful English story (in this case, propagated by the CND). Cultural misappropriation, I call it.
https://epcbits.wordpress.com/2018/10/17/origin-story-the-peace-symbol/
I will admit that when we Danes (quietly) held our millennial celebration of their landing back in the early 1960's, badges with the symbol were very popular and a great seller. Possibly something to do with Vietnam (and later, the French nuclear testing in the Pacific). Who knows ?
It's no wonder the NZ youth of today have confusion over some of their history. I hope this has cleared up any mis-understanding.
Cheers, Viking

I love the Le Thai in Akaroa, can't get more French than that.
Where I kinda agree with the OP is that there has been a very sudden switch in Media outlets driven from the top, plus renaming of departments etc. I can see how it's going to cause some backlash; better a slow gentle movement then a sudden shove to help someone along the path of learning our other language. Jacinda does lack subtlety though, so not surprising, even the things I agree with them on (free school lunches, the adoption of Te Reo etc) they manage to fuck up.
That's us Kiwis though, we look to the world and go "oh look they do that, we should give it a go", then miss several vital steps n fohk it up.

Nah, it doesn't make sense. Katy Hopkins, and others of that ilk, refer to Londonistan and think they are deriding the place. Unwittingly they are actually correct. A "stan" is a place where a people live. Afghanistan is where the Afghans live. The Tajiks live in Tajikistan, and the Uzbeks live in Uzbekistan and so on. Thus Londonistan is where the Londoners live. Katy is only half as witty as she thinks.
For such an idea to work here you'd have to try something like Kiwistan. That works, but I don't think it'll catch on.

Oh dear someone has opened a can of worms. I don't like New Zealand as our name or Aotearoa. Abel Tasman was lazy taking an existing place name and just sticking 'New' in front of it. Slacker never even bothered to step foot on the land. Totally lacking original thought and effort. Just like New York, New Jersey, New Plymouth- laziness. At what point does a place no longer become 'new'? So a referendum is in order.
Our independent nationhood was forged at Gallipoli and those New Zealanders fought for New Zealand under a New Zealand flag. I would safely say not one of them described themself as an Aotearoan. Therefore I recommend Zealandia as our country name. That pays tribute to the ANZACs and avoids the Maori vs New Zealand proponents arguing until the cows come home. A neutral, sort of middle ground word (latin), neither a Te Reo or English word. We would get to walk last at the Olympic games (unless Zimbabwe turn up) - as far as possible away from those Aussies.
As for Government departments adopting names in a language that only 4% of the population speak (Statistic dept 2018) I have to question the logic as an effective means of communication when your audience is the general population of NZ of which 95% speak English. Same for our news readers. Communication = one party sends a message and the receiver understands the message. I'd call that a fail by our newsreaders.
Edit- hopefully this can be discussed without becoming a racial slinging match. It's about democracy and common sense and practicality and finding a name that best reflects that we are a nation of multiple ethnic immigrants that settled a new world and for the most part have displayed to the world how different ethnic people can live in harmony and respect each others cultures and heritage. Well done everyone!

Considering that the language was actively suppressed for many years I'm not sure we can use the 4% of population can speak argument fairly. There should be a greater percentage able to speak it but sadly active measure were put in place before our time to prevent that.
Depends on whether this generation should have to take ownership of wrongs before us or not... Considering my heritage I'm 75% sure none of my ancestors were responsible, so does that make me less liable than someone who's blood lines trace back to that time?
Where it comes down to is where does the buck stop. My personal hope is to see NZ not part of the crown anymore, they're the ones that caused the mess but it's the NZ taxpayer fronting for it still...
Until we establish our own identity outside of that (which includes all our cultures) I don't ever see us operating as a united nation. Sadly we missed it big time when we failed to get the union jack off our flag (poorly executed by John Key and the opposition IMO, it should have never been a Nats vs Labour thing).
Personally I agree with Seymours comments on the name, essentially you can call it Timbuktu for all I care, just as long as we can buy an affordable house and live well.

On a more serious note, some people really need to properly understand what communism really is if throwing it around as a label.
Communism is a failed social experiment which just ends up as an authoritarian regime. Human history has largely had authoritarian regime as its default position whether you get there by fascist strongarming, monarchy, or any other means. Capitalism has been an effective way of building wealth but if you swing too far you end up with massive building inequality and ultimately class wars, the need for stronger stabilisation controls to keep the peace, and oh dear, how did we get here again?
What we have is a centrist government leaning left or right a few degrees depending who is in power.
So 240, enough throwing around labels Shiltler.

This was where they fucked up, nearly 50% were in favour of it, of those that weren't I wonder how many would have been if there were more options. There should have been a "none of these but I'm for it" tick box. Either that or just employ a team of designers, do some research and change the fucking thing without asking the whole nation. Pretty sure that's what Canada did and their flag is fucking awesome.

Maybe what NZ needs is an evangelical Christian like Chris Luxton
A man who can see Jebus.
"I see Jesus showing compassion, tolerance and care for others. He doesn't judge, discriminate or reject people. He loves unconditionally."
Throughout history, Christians had made a huge difference in public life.
"Christian abolitionists fought against slavery. Others educated the poor and challenged the rich to share their wealth and help others less fortunate."

Maybe if Chris says it its okay bt if a women does its....
"For example, we decided that New Zealand's shameful record of family violence was a workplace issue as well as a social issue so we introduced a three-week paid family violence leave policy for victims."
The pay equity gap at Air New Zealand had been reduced to zero and senior leadership team positions held by women went from 16 per cent to 44 per cent.
"We worked hard to grow career pathways and internships for young Māori and Pasifika. We worked hard to champion and mainstream te reo and tā moko. We earned gender and rainbow tick certifications."
Air New Zealand was also a foundation member of the Climate Leaders Coalition - 100 per cent of its car fleet became fully electric – over five years ago.

I think Dave was trying to make a point? There are a lot of idiots claiming Hitler was a socialist because of the Nazi name. The name was picked to appeal tp the widest possible range of voters and it ticked all of the boxes. Some of Hitler's economic policies have been described as socialist, but he was doing whatever it took to get the German economy back on track and Keynes was the flavour of the month at the time.

I hate using the poxy Herald for anything but lining a birdcage, but... https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/covid-19-coronavirus-politicians-pass-temporary-law-for-own-pay-cuts/EEPZBFROPNIZE7SZCWIZVE4FXE/
Yup and it mentions exactly my point in the article, he put one forward for a mandatory cut and old whatsit with the Batchelor of Attendance veto'd it immediately"
"Act leader David Seymour said the pay cuts for politicians should be mandatory, rather than at the discretion of the Remuneration Authority, and the same 20 per cent cut should apply across the board for all MPs.
In his speech to Parliament, he also criticised the two-month delay in passing the law to ensure the pay cuts would apply.
"It was April 14 when the Prime Minister was happy to bathe in national, indeed global, media adulation for leadership when announcing an MP pay cut would be made. Yet here we are a month later."
His own attempts to introduce a law change earlier had been blocked by the Government."
So I stand by my statement

Rimmer (Seymour) knew he was on safe ground as he knew full well that the Remuneration Authority sets pay for pollies. His grandstanding move for the polly creatures to set their own pay rates would never fly as the public would not wear it. They all like to have their pay set by an outside-ish party so they can "reluctantly" take it while saying "Nothing to do with me. Forced to take it".

IIRC it was his idea to begin with that Labour finally enacted. Not the first one of his policies they've nicked and called their own too.

I'll have a good think and advise Autechs underdog. I would rule out Aleix tbh but will need to see FP1 and 2 to know.
Otherwise one of the KTMs if they're working for the best odds

Yep. Having their own and beneficiaries, pensioners, etc, set at a distance from the politicians seems a good idea though. The rates are set after a review of a set of economic indicators.
The US national minimum wage has been US$7.25 since 2009. The rate is set by the politicians themselves. Prices have inflated hugely in the last 12 years or so, yet the Republican politicians have opposed any effort to increase the $7.25. Still some minimum wage employees vote for them, talk about turkeys and Christmas.
Some individual states may set their own minimum wage. It's a common cry from Republican supporters that if the minimum wage is increased to $15, as has been suggested, a burger will cost $38.00 or some other outrageous amount. Washington DC has a minimum wage of $15.00 and their burgers are not notably more expensive than elsewhere in the USA.

Nah, it doesn't make sense. For such an idea to work here you'd have to try something like Kiwistan.
It was aimed at all the other failed states & banana republics ending in 'stan...
Stupid fucking English bureaucrats gave us an Australian flag with one less star on it.
Look closely, there are two less stars...<_<
In a similar vein I'd refer the OP to the 'German Democratic Republic' of the Soviet era. ... Names can be misleading.
Not so. Any country with "democratic" in its name means it most certainly isn't anything of the sort!
"It was April 14 when the Prime Minister was happy to bathe in national, indeed global, media adulation for leadership when announcing an MP pay cut would be made. Yet here we are a month later."
Just like the rest of her promises, either never delivered OR delayed until they get booted out and a new government has to deal with the gian steaming turds they created. "Kiwibuild", "child poverty" anyone?

Actually it’s mostly the woke media outlets pushing all this and other stuff.
Quite refreshing to see my cell network provider now has the pacific people’s word for hello. One waits to see if they’ve willhonour the other ethnic minorities living here.....,
On a side note it would be devastating for business. We already struggle to getvrest of world to realise we are not just part of Australia. The key to all successful business is marketing and you don’t wanna want to confuse the world and where’s or who’s we are.
New Zealand is a brand name worth millions be foolish to change it

Actually I never really look hard a flags. I only just realised that various nordic countries have a sideways cross on them as I cut one off a techy neck warmer I bought disgusted with the evil imagery of christ on my clothing, turned it sideways and went. Hey. That's the swedish flag. Duh. [Snip snip].

My wife just had to try a hotdogs from a street vendor with one of those carts you see in 80s movies. I don't know why she expected it to be anything other than horrible.

There is a hot dog cart in Lower Hutt, in the car park of the Maungaraki overbridge. There almost every day, never seen anyone buying anything. I hate to think the unsold stock is recycled to the next day, and the next, until finally sold

Well actually the poor prick invested in his business and got a much bigger and better mobile setup.
Then some cunts stole it. Probably for scrap. Was in the paper maybe 2 yrs ago. Had to go back to his old cart. Still the old cart. Of course a lot of time no people.
Almost feel like giving the guy some money.
But I don't want to get close enough to smell what it likely smells like.
Island Bay butcher for fantastic sausages.

Yup. Either the weird colour combinations of the "cross" OR the European approach of having three colours across them... they are a puzzle.

Always makes me laugh when people talk about doing route 66 as if it is a mindblowing life experience.
There is so much more to do and see in the states that is actually a memorable and unique experience, going to an Elvis and Marilyn diner on route 66 is only one step above going to McDonalds

Ha! I was there from 79 to 84 in South Karori. I had a panther, the rims ensured I got a puncture or three every day until I snapped the frame lol. HMX500s were the only bike I could wheelie with any proficiency, but they had cranks made of butter!
I can remember pushing my panther up wrights hill getting passed by pe250's and pe400's thinking "one day all I will have to do is turn a throttle too" lol. And so it came to be with a poor old ts185er, then xr200 followed by rm125d. Great days!

I broke the frame but the neighbour welded it. A mates Panther broke the mags when he tried jumping the practice wickets at KNS school where I went. We'd ride around the Arena and get wet in the puddles. Best bit was back down the hill. Was pretty much closed up by the time I got my flogfed out XR250 and that was plain ugly with 23" front wheel and two knackered tyres and a skinny 17 Yr old.
