Australian's first Holden motor vehicle was launched on this day by GM Holden 1948 FX designed in Detroit. The actual company came from James Holden who was a saddler, then when saddles went out of vogue in the early 1990's he started upholstery and building bodies for cars and that's where Holden came from.

I didn't know Mini made subs and supplied them to the Japanese. Was it an Austin Mini Sub? or the coveted Mini Cooper Sub?

Actually ... the mini WAS very popular in Japan. It's compact stature was in keeping with Japans space saving needs.

The two seat version Japan used (as mentioned) at the beginning of the war ... to get to those hard to get to places in Hawaii ... was a version Austin never envisioned.

It reminds me of the time my sister phoned me for help ... her car had broken down. Apparently ... the carburetor was flooded.

Arriving at her location an hour or so later ... I found it was indeed flooded.

Pretty sure it was the day ruthless Richardson finished the mother of all budgets in 1991. It was released to the public a week later.'

this lead to the phase being coined of Ruthanasia
At the 1993 election National's comfortable 18 seat majority from 1990 was reduced to a bare majority of only 1

As well as cutting benefits Richardson also introduced many user pays requirements in hospitals and schools, services previously free to the populace and paid for by the government.
Former Prime Minister Sir Robert Muldoon resigned from his Tamaki constituency in protest of Richardson's policies.

In 1854 some english lords thought it might be clever to Charge heavy artillery numbering at least 50 pieces on three sides across a few km off open country with the about 60 horses and men that had neither armour or firearms
In the tradition of the army, those involved with giving the orders were all promoted.
All the needless deaths were glorified by the poet who was later made an english lord as well

Half a league, half a league,
Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
“Forward, the Light Brigade!
Charge for the guns!” he said.
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

“Forward, the Light Brigade!”
Was there a man dismayed?
Not though the soldier knew
Someone had blundered.
Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die.
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
Volleyed and thundered;
Stormed at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of hell
Rode the six hundred.

Flashed all their sabres bare,
Flashed as they turned in air
Sabring the gunners there,
Charging an army, while
All the world wondered.
Plunged in the battery-smoke
Right through the line they broke;
Cossack and Russian
Reeled from the sabre stroke
Shattered and sundered.
Then they rode back, but not
Not the six hundred.

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon behind them
Volleyed and thundered;
Stormed at with shot and shell,
While horse and hero fell.
They that had fought so well
Came through the jaws of Death,
Back from the mouth of hell,
All that was left of them,
Left of six hundred.

When can their glory fade?
O the wild charge they made!
All the world wondered.
Honour the charge they made!
Honour the Light Brigade,
Noble six hundred!

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them

Clowns to the left jokers to the right here i am struck in the middle again

There are your guns!", and added the word "attack", when Raglan had intended merely a show of force."

okay

Lord Cardigan, commanding the Light Brigade, hated his brother-in-law Lord Lucan.

For his part, Lucan also hated Cardigan.

Meanwhile, the troops hated both Cardigan and Lucan.
Cardigan had no combat experience, nor did British Commander Lord Raglan

“Vain, and a notorious womaniser with a foul temper, Cardigan once had an officer arrested for drinking porter at a mess dinner, while earlier in the campaign he had made his exhausted men keep moving tents around until he was satisfied that they were arranged in a sufficiently symmetrical manner.”

https://www.forces.net/news/how-non-charge-light-brigade-really-unfolded

In the years that followed, Cardigan, Lucan and Raglan would all blame each other for the disaster, but in the end, as Withington notes, “none of them emerge with much credit from the story.”

okay edit agan

from wiki
At the outbreak of the Crimean War, Lord Lucan applied for a post and was made commander of the Cavalry Division. His brother-in-law, the 7th Earl of Cardigan, was one of his subordinates, commanding the Light Brigade – an unfortunate choice as the two men heartily detested each other.
At the Battle of Balaclava Lucan received an order from Raglan and in turn ordered Cardigan to lead the Charge of the Light Brigade, resulting in heavy British casualties without significant gains. As Lucan brought the Heavy Brigade forward in support, he was lightly wounded in the leg. Raglan blamed Lucan for the loss ("You have lost the light brigade"), and censured him in despatches. Although Lucan complained against this censure, as the relationship between the army commander and the cavalry commander had clearly broken down, he was recalled to England, where he returned at the beginning of March 1855.

On his arrival, Lucan's demand for a court-martial was declined and instead he defended himself with a speech to the House of Lords on 19 March 1855, blaming Raglan and his deceased aide-de-camp, Captain Louis Nolan. This tactic appears to have been successful as he was subsequently appointed Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath on 5 July 1855, and Colonel of the 8th Light Dragoons, who had charged with the Light Brigade, on 17 November 1855

There are twelve Flashman novels by George McDonald Fraser. Well worth a look.

The fact that Pauline Parker and her friend Juliet Hulme had killed Pauline’s mother Honorah on 22 June – a sensational crime later dramatised in Peter Jackson’s acclaimed film Heavenly creatures – was never disputed. In finding the teenagers guilty of murder, the jury rejected the defence’s assertion that they were insane.

Because both were under 18 – Pauline was 16 and Juliet 15 – neither could be sentenced to death. Their punishment was ‘detention during Her Majesty’s pleasure’.
