View Full Version : Transmission Gully cheesecutter grizzle thread

No doubt there will some whingeing about cheesecutters being used on this new road, and don't forget the sparse cell phone coverage they say is present, or not present, depends on how you look at it.
It's opening tommoorw, who will be the first victim of the supposed new state of the art speed policing system with elapsed time options.
This is the thread to have a whine on, might as well get it started now.

And it only took since 1919. Might've been cheaper to do it then.

imagine the environmental costs involved in the current build, compared to back then where that sort of thing wasn't even a word

Number plate covers and some 3am road testing. Could be interesting

I tried a quick google about the radar and all I found was system that detects anyone stopping or objects falling from vehicle. But I do quite believe they have avg speed capability as that is plug and play for many electronic signs around country, govt just needs to buy the software camera upgrade.
Haven’t been that way in big rig in awhile but it’s a said to have a 8% grade section similar to ngaraunga gorge but twice as long. For big rigs the fuel burn comparisons will be interesting compared to coastal route.
Given most traffic will use it it may even make the existing route a more attractiveness option as you still have ability to pull over for a pie, piss or a smoke....
When I heard about the runaway truck ramp I though how long before some bozo goes for a play in the sandpit in their 4wd and gets beached

half the people on talk back today said the yanks said they would do it during the war, right after they said they were going to put a big pipe in the ground and fill in the manawatu gorge. We used to start rumours at primary school and see how long they would last. Back in 1919 the main road to wellington was the paekakariki hill, i'm picking they explored several routes into wellington, including where they have run the new road. It would have been like the old mangaweka hill if they had built it way back then and been shit loads longer i guess

Car drivers reporting stone damage to windscreens and paint. TV news says sections will be reduced speed tomorrow for remedial work (already?)

I examined a workmates car yesterday. He'd had to spend time next to a truck. About 5 tiny chips in windscreen and a dozen on his bonnet.

Did a scenic cruise along the Transmission Gully yesterday afternoon and it is SWEET. Some nice countryside tucked away in that valley, some nice native bush still hanging in there. The road is quite elevated most of the way so you are often looking down on places like Pautahanui and Porirua from above, gives good views out to sea. Interesting sweepers at the Tawa/Porirua exit will no doubt be given some 'performance testing' by some.

the old traffic cop cars were called black and whites, black with white front doors. The doors were a different colour so in a hurry they didn't run to the cars and jump in the wrong door I beleive

I wonder if they practiced getting to the other side by sliding across the bonnet Dukes of Hazard style? Imagine only kinda getting half way and having to shuffle off?

Some mates distant, wanted to ride it tomorrow. I'm going to Ekatahuna tomorrow instead. Have to go Monday but can't take the bike. Should I put a blanket over the bonnet?
Should I try to wank hard enough to cover the outside with conditioner?

Sunday morning and I have just tried out the gully. Maybe it is just my bike but I found the road to be 25km of what I would call a micro cattle grate. My bike is a VRF800 so a touring bike mostly. I would rate the surface as 3/10. To complete my comparison I rode up to Peka Peka and the difference is significant. Riding back the road felt marginally better. A great piece of engineering just a shame about the surface. I did note on tv the other day that someone commented about the roughness of the surface and I tried not to let that opinion affect mine. Maybe I need to try a different grade of fork oil but for now I think I will stick to the old road.

It’s hard to get good help these days...
While it looks easy there’s a lot of technical know how that goes into producing a good surface. And you can’t just read about that or get a certificate in it. It’s on the job training and knowledge passed down while rolling a smoke leaning on shovel.
We lost a lot of skilled people to old age, big $$$ across the ditch and the intrusion of osh etc...
On top of that spray a little diversity’s hireage about and it’s all buggered up.
A professional outfit locally buggered up a simple reseal on a major bypass road. Then the repair job was just as bad. So on attempt three they laid pure ashphalt before they lost even more money. And that would have hurt as lot more expensive than chip...
Been back and forth in the car and again today on the bike. Still like it but sadly a lot of it is chip seal and stones are flying. Got a couple of piss-me-off hits on my new visor today and have now learned to stay WAY, WAY back from any vehicle in front. How did they not pick up with weeks and months of so called 'testing' that the seal chip was loose? I wouldn't describe the surface as corrugated or rough, certainly not a pool table finish though. Below average for sure.
Lets see how the heavily shaded sections cope with winter damp and ice.

Every chip sealed surface is going to have loose chips after the final roll. On any normal road they keep a low speed limit for a day or two so that traffic can continue the bedding in process but even then there will always be loose stones. Normally they will get flung into a paddock.
On this road they did not have traffic to finish the job so there was more loose chip for a start, and what there is gets flung 20m and still finds itself with its mates on the carriageway so gets flung again back the other way. And again. And again.
Chip seal is a cheap and shitty surface perfectly suited to New Zealand. Guess they went so far over budget that was all they could do rather than lay some sweet AC or even concrete. It will be the last PPP roading job done in NZ, now we just wait for the same Australian contractors to fuck up the Dunedin hospital build.

Just back from driving it both ways for work trip. Fortunately reverse direction to commuting peeps. So no cars or trucks to flick stones at me.
At least joining at Haywards it is great road. But you can see areas of seal that are looking worn already. Some looks mint, but some areas are going through.
Past Otaki and lots of vehicles sitting still on the new road. Probably having a meeting to ask themselves if the will have the same fuck up.

All this talk about Police Training not being enough? My first big fatal a few months in, was a couple of heads OFF ! Death followed me the first few years, It got so that I always did the death files and my partner in the car did the Accident File. It worked for us . No cuddles in those days, you just did the job and then into the bar after work. You either handle it or you leave, easy. xxxxxxxx

Sign of the times that someone has the incredulity to say they weren’t trained to cope with that(it would’ve be impossible to do anyway) and secondly that the media even thinks they can get away with publishing that as news when it should be an agony aunt sidebar in women’s weekly.
I did couple nights work experience at high school. The 160km/h blue lighting down main suburban 50k route to back up a pursuit unit was cool. However later in night our car was first on scene to a dude that got randomly bricked in face(real bad) by gangster that had been twice refused entry to a bar by bouncers. The cop put him and the screaming girlfriend on backseat and drove them to hospital. I was like yeah screw spending rest of life dealing with this crap.
It seems a common theme though people only want the easy stuff and try squirm out of the hard parts these days. I’ve had to tell more than one trainee to read the fine print in contract requiring you to do “other” duties as required, and yes you will do it....
I thinks it’s normal for lot of people to not be able to cope with seeing trauma injuries but ludicrous to expect their to be some magic wand to teach you how to deal with it.
