GPS locater + Sucess stories

I'm about to buy a GPS locater. Needs a sim card etc. Any pointers on which one is the best value for money. Cheap ones seem to tell you where your bike is ... if you call it. Expensive ones - on full time, and some onnect to the battery. I have several vehicles and would like one for each - so total cost is a consideration.
Also - any GPS success stories?
