one that stays was my dads (i guess) first bike, he had when he was an apprentice,he buggered the forks or they were when he bought it and made earles forks for it.
As was the fashion at the time.
There is an extra one. That i have no real interest in.
He bought a new 54 Dot afterwards, that we also still have.
it has the 8e 4 speed but with wide ratios they would only be useful for a trials bike.

Pretty sure it is a Panther. He has a Panther that he has competed with and has downsized it from a 600 to a 500. I think that motor on the bench is the 600 esentially but all a bit pick and mix. As is the entire collection.

On that note, what do you think would be a tactful offer for me to make on the motor? It has the head and a large rhs side cover missing plus needs the bore sorting etc. I think he wants me to have it but is not going to give it to me? I have no idea of value

Ok, so I picked up the motor today. It was an easy fit in the topbox of the multistrada. I measured it and my schoolboy maths tells me it is a 90cc

Right, so it's time for an update. I was wrong, the motor is deffo a 100 cc, 3 speed.
So I stripped it down to make a rough list of what bits I need vs what bits I can get. Overall it seems in good nick, very clean inside but lots of wear on the clutch basket and primary gear. Also the output shaft is very flogged on the sprocket fitting spline end.
There is a side cover missing from the RHS of the motor and a cover plate from the air filter. The Rh crankcase has a bit busted off that holds the end of the clutch cable and an adjuster for the throwout lever.

So I made an electrolysis bath and the tank spent(wasted) a week bubbling away in there. I may turn it into some kind of crazy lamp…
Anyway, cut the rims off and dismantled the frame and it is currently in a barrell getting the electrolysis treatment.
The forks are bizarre, I grabbed the bottom sections and they just kinda slid out, off the top section with no apparent method of holding them together. Unless it is a subtle kind of bayonet fitting? I will find out once I start stripping them down.
It looks tiny next to my Monster! …which is not a big bike!

Those rims will buff out. Might want to replace the front tyre though. That sprocket will be OK once you've arc welded it back on.

Dave's a cynic. That output shaft can be built up with TIG welding.
Doesn't need to be remachined, careful hand work with files and a new sprocket as a gauge will get it usable again.

Maybe how it was made in the first place. Ftf (file to fit) was found on a lot of Rolls Royce documentation when Packard were tasked with building Merlins. Ducati may have used similar, or even CtF (chisel to fit)
If you have read the story about Cook Nielsens "Old Blue" Ducati, you would recall the efforts made by Phil Schilling to get the factory close ratio gearbox to fit and work.

i am still doing a bit. just finished undercutting a GSX1100 gearbox - and yes, some TIG work was needed.

I used an old battery charger, so 12v and up to 5 amps. In a 30-40 litre bath I probabaly mixed in about a cup maybe a bit more? I just followed a few you tube examples..

While it would pay to shop around - 5 litres at Mitre 10 - $57, 5 litres in TradeMe - $155 - to sink a whole Landy chassis would be $$$$

I tried the evaporust and it worked well but am interested as to wht you have used for an anode as I am going to still use the electrolysis?…
meantime….I cleaned out the hubs, sandblasted, bead blasted and fitted new bearings, rims and spokes! I have started!

I will have a dig in the shed tomorrow.
I have a lot bit more room as the C33 is out of there now.
but the gist of what I used was a punch plate so it had massive surface area not sure if it was SS or just high chromium but although Google stuff say not to use SS it worked extra well for me.
The other thing is make sure you are using a old old battery charger as they dont ramp down the amps. Like modern ones do.
because we are on well water, our water likely had a high mineral content and I used plenty of washing soda the tank I used was a old fridge laid on its side With hungry boards and the thick tarp liner this was because the RD frames are quite bulky

Yeah my charger does ramp down! I am just using re-bar and it seems to do the trick. I have a 200l plastic drum and just swapped the frame end for end after a couple of days. I will have to see if I can get a different power source,,,,,

I have a power supply so I can set the current. I mean it works but you still have something rust damaged underneath. That said my Stinger was literally named Rusty (and I don't name bikes).

Right so I borrowed a truing stand off one of my Ulysses riding mates. I think it is older than him! Set it up in the kitchen, after my wife had gone to bed of course, and trued both new rims and spokes onto the old hubs…

I like it. I use the vice an axle and spacer and do it horizontally, but that's much better.
What are the appendages at the front? Oh, for rim rubbing measurements I guess. I gerry rig a pointer, or sometimes a vivid.
Then I'll put it in situation to centralise it which is easy once true.
Electric Screwdriver has made the building stage much quicker. The wheels even take on a trueish form early on if carefully used.
I got them pretty close by just lying them flat while lacing up. I could not figure out what the appendage things are for. At no point are they anywhere near the wheel.

You couldn't pivot them to get them closer to the wheel.. maybe they can be unbolted and then bolted back on the other side but why would they have been there in the first place? The guy that owns it is perplexed as well

have you tried loosen the lock nut on the curved part? it should then tilt upwards, that's what it looks like to me.;)
Yeah but the feeler things are on the bottom and at no point come anywhere near the wheel.

No, that looks quite usable. Slide the blade device out of the way and lift it up. Pointers can then be used. Blade thing gets slid up to measure up/down run-out. It's just in the storage position.

Yeah that blade can show if the rim is running oval or cocked.
Then with it moved up and the blade out of the way forward the two pointers become able to do the side run out.
I wonder if it was made originally for spoked car wheels as it's very rugged looking.
I think it's excellent a real class bit of old world kit.

I got them from ebay. As they were std size, the spokes were a given. Not sure how you would find out how to size the new spokes but the internet may be your friend there?

If it's a standard hub/rim combo and the factory still lists spokes as available that does save time.
Big question when building a wheel is the offset. Not fun to find the new wheels can't be brought into alignment.
Not all hub/rim combos share a centerline.

The rolling chassis Alan has came from me, hense the rust.
I have a complete bike still. It was dad's first bike. same rust "patina"I am thinking of growing a goatee. and buying some exhaust wrap and a brown seat cover

Right so finally I am moving forward again! Got a bunch of stuff top coated so now I can start fitting swing arm, forks and wheels plus chain guard, centre stand and foot pegs.
Also painted under the tank and inside the headlight bucket so that when I topcoat these I only have to do the outside

I just used a bunch of D12 rebars wired together and the last lot I did I used S/S allthread. It was way cleaner with stainless but I am not sure if it did a better job or not? What was your anode?

They "ie internet"say not to use SS but I have had much better results with this but I feel it may be due to its huge surface area rather than material?

I guess other then a bit of Chromium the and a bit of nickel the rest is mainly iron
washing soda. ie Sodium Carbonate
it might not be stainless just high chromium steel
all I can say is it worked for me note the surface area its whooping.

So time for the front suspension to go on. I had to source some special felt to make the seals for the top of the sliders. I had two goes at it as I cut them a couple of mm short first time round. The felt comes about 8mm thick and once I split it and soaked it in oil it was about right. First time I have seen this setup. There is nothing at all inside the slider other than a tab that the bottom of the spring rotates into. You tip 20cc of oil in the fork slider, slip it on and then twist the whole thing onto the spring.

Wheels on. Need to machine a new pin for the centre stand. They do not come with a side stand. The pin for the stand also extends out to mount the brake lever. It is a poor effort even from new. The thing was flogged out beyond belief.

On it's wheels for the first time in probably 30 or 40 years! I had some chroming done, painted up the lever perches/gear change twist grip and polished the little tiny aluminium bridge thingies under the u bolts. Which I had to also restore as it was too hard to get some in that correct size. Same goes for a lot of the slotted dome countersunk machine screws. In fact that is such a mouthful I think I gave up on even asking for them!
Fitted the brand new old stock muffler and header to get them out of the way. The muffler cane from italy and the vendor would not post outside italy so I got a guy called Carl to collect from Rome for me. His business is, Yorkshire Man with a Van. When he sent it to me he stuffed both ends of the muffler with old undies and made sure I was aware that contact with them was risky! Haha! It had rust speckles so I decided to rechrome it along with a couple or three other things.The header was NOS and mint.
I pushed it inside to take photos, just to piss my wife off! Mission accomplished!

Nice! So I only ended up using the hubs from your bike at this stage. I am going to also use the guards but they need some love too. I scored a whole nother frame and swingarm with forks as well in better nick. Plus a bucket of assorted engine bits. Mostly 4 speed. It has been good being able to pick the best tho WRT springs, brackets, bushes etc…

OK time for an update now that it seems easier to post pics…
Fitted the motor and then fitted the polished shrouds. The shrouds themselves are a bit scarred up and it is not worth me trying to remove the scratches as it would hugely affect the shape. They also hide the motor which is nicer to look at than the shrouds…
The LHS clutch cover is badly scarred and I bought a brand new old stock one in march which has been sitting in my box of parts waiting for it's chance to shine! Which it did, although not on the engine as they supplied me the wrong one! As in, not the one they pictured or nominated in the ebay ad. Now the guy is uncontactable, as is the guy in spain selling the correct ones new…frustrating…
Anyway, i am waiting on an exhaust gasket to fit the exhaust, an airbox lid, a spark plug and a bunch of enthusiasm!

Yep, you did thanks. I have found with the smaller things that evaporust is just easier. Has been a good bit of experimentation for me tho with removing rust and then zinc plating a few bits!👍:niceone:

I've got a '67 Mark 3 250 narrow case in the shed that I'd love to have finished, but I suspect I wouldn't even be able to kick start it due to health issues. I've pondered moving it on or swappiing it for an old BMW.
