This I like a lot. You can spec it with a lower fairing but I do like the look as it is.

Yes, looks good and probably goes even better.
IMO, all the harking back to the 2stroke racebike history is wrong.
What it looks like to me is the FZ750R alloy frame JDM bikes that were the basis for Yamaha's endurance race effort.
Looks like something off the Suzuka 8 hour grid - and there's nothing wrong with that.

Yeah good point.

Negatory. The rectangle light spoils the front like an afterthought. Ironic as they have the answer already with the R1M under lights.

Talking about afterthought, that tailpiece is way too small for the bike and looks like it doesn't fit, like someone rested it there.

Yes, make it 8hr rep.

it reminded me of the 1984 Eddie YZR500 only far less chunky
i don't like the front guard on the new one and the tail piece is too short.
Edit the front guard on th enew one closely resembles the 86 USD version so i take back what i said...

Sorry the first pic is a 86.

I quite like it. I would like it more with a 500cc direct injection two stroke. Or a rotary engine. A boy can dream.

It looks like the kind of bike that ends up in someone's garage, just to be looked at because of its replica-retro styling. Fans of old 1980s bikes might like it, the old styling is 'interesting', but it's too janky and unbalanced to be beautiful.
I hope it rides as well as the GP name suggests, a lot of people were hoping for an R9.

If they specced it with analogue dials I think they’d really nail it, but damn I’d nearly buy one just for the paint scheme

Am on the lookout for my last new bike to celebrate impending retirement. This has just popped on to my list.

Would need the lower fairing and a tail tidy. If it had speed blocks it would be higher on my list. If it had twin headlights like my old FZR600 it would be top three. Front on it looks odd but lots of room for the old Barry Sheene number 7 sticker.

Hmmmmmm.

Edit - Strayans get a video and pics of the grey one. Can't see that shifting big numbers. https://www.yamaha-motor.com.au/discover/news-and-events/news/motorcycle/2023/october/new-xsr900-gp

Obviously the arse end has been hit with the ugly stick and I don't know what you do about that. Oh yes I do, wait for this one - Yamaha R9? (https://www.motorcyclenews.com/news/new-bikes/yamaha-r9/?itm_source=Bibblio&itm_campaign=Bibblio-related&itm_medium=Bibblio-footer-2)

Or perhaps the GP is it?

A few rags have been saying that the GP is the suspected bike in that year old article. Time will tell. Although as a friend pointed out to me, it wouldn't take much to graft an FZR400 race tail section onto the GP.

Hate to think how much the 'racer pack' will be if the bike ever comes to NZ- XSR900 GP Racer Pack (https://www.instagram.com/p/Cy6N96tNUeA/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=embed_video_watch_again)

Base model plus the lower fairing coming out at between 27 and 28K over in little old Europe from what I have been reading.

Dropped off my list now.

Did find this the other day which looked kind of cool if you have an XSR900 lying around - MCN-velocity-moto-yamaha-xsr900-rd500lc/ (https://www.motorcyclenews.com/news/new-bikes/velocity-moto-yamaha-xsr900-rd500lc/)

So it has made it onto the Yamaha NZ website but no price given - https://www.yamaha-motor.co.nz/products/motorcycle/road/sport-heritage/xsr900-gp

Still like those Velocity Moto body kits (http://velocity-moto.com/900f.html). I'll have mine in yellow please.

A bit porky at 200 kg eh.

onearmedbandit

And if it's priced where rumours suggest it will be, mid to high 20's then it's becoming less and less attractive than I first hoped.

Yamaha should make a R9 plus a R9M with active suspension. Just keep it below 200 kg and they'd have a winner - I'd buy one.

Funny that the images don't show the 2024 MT-09SP brakes and suspension being used. It does sound like the full electronic rider aid system is available but again the 09SP has a couple of little extras which considering the other bits not shown, could be missing

"a fee belly pan valued at $829" fuckin expensive piece of plastic, but

"a fee belly pan valued at $829" fuckin expensive piece of plastic, but

When I was ordering some parts from overseas a few years back a friend asked me to price a rear seat cover for his Repsol Fireblade. Genuine part landed here from America was about $240. The same part through Honda NZ was $540. Makes that belly pan look cheap in comparison. But yeah still.

SaferRides
2nd April 2024, 21:22
It looks like they designed the bike with a full fairing and then decided making the belly pan an accessory could bring in more $$$.

Not as bad as KTM charging extra for electronic functions that should be standard, but the same principle.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240402/b453413cb874b4712682e22d10380175.jpg

Seen my first one in the flesh today, It was parked up I was in too much as a hurry to go back for a decent look. In the flesh seat look out of proportion too .

onearmedbandit

Totally agree regarding the seat, saw one in a few days back and it looks massively out of proportion both in the pics and in the flesh.

Probably yamahas nod to the fact that most riders looking to re-live their 80's race replica days now have expanded ASSets. I know I do.

Headstock always looks too high and Tank angled up on these and the specials people have made to emulate RZ500s

SaferRides
15th February 2025, 06:34
I saw that and the R9 at Phillip Island last year. No contest which is the better looking bike.

Wow, just realised as I read this. Last night I had a dream. A bonafide thought I was there dream.

For some reason I was in a huge festival or some crowded area. I had a RZ500 which was a Marlboro Rep YZR500 and was having to continuously slip the clutch to move and couldn't let it out. Sounded pretty good though.

Ha. This thread must have prompted it. Weird huh?

Sounded pretty good though.

Least I wasn't on some four stroke.
