Heads Up - Canterbury Rural is going to get a hammering

Word is that the traffic guys from Christchurch are going to be deployed into rural Canterbury during November, and possibly December.

The focus is going to be on speed and seatbelts, even more than usual.

Speed is going to be enforced from the speed limit up, so the tolerance we have come to expect may not be exercised.

I kind of feel that it's about time, but I know that's not a commonly held view.

Indeed. But the idea of relocating a bunch of Canterbury road policing staff each day to Waikato is a bit wild.

Hurunui, Waimakariri, Selwyn and Ashburton are all within driving distance for a day of ticket writing, and still have the staff home each night. Further afield would cost far, far more.

Besides, we kill plenty in Canterbury too, seatbelts appear optional to a percentage of the population here, and the expected tolerance is a problem to be overcome.

It would be interesting to see comparisons of enforcement levels vs crashes compared to similar lower population remote areas in North Island as we have a few low enforcement levels too due to staffing and distance.
They reckon crashes are down on SH5 since lower tolerance levels and subsequent 80 k limit and daily appearances by cops compared to previous zero levels unless something had happened.
But at a glance it still seems like lot of crashes happening.

I find there’s usually someone faster willing to be a sweeper/live bait that you can follow at a distance in these areas anyway. Especially if you leave earlyish there’s always a businessman in a flash suv that’s late for a meeting etc….

Knocked out 550km yesterday while riding like a responsible citizen (mostly) to Blackball for lunch, only saw one fine upstanding officer of the law west of Springfield in his Blue Skoda on the return leg

We had one of those just out of Reefton, he was sitting on 120-125kmh using both sides of the road when it suited him, of course we would not have followed him at that speed as that would be against the law and would be wrong :msn-wink:

HB police have just done a major operation against car boy racers. Sounds like they finally did what I’ve recommended for a long time. Catch them at a choke point and go through one by one. Reinforcements bought in from around Nth island.
Many cars impounded, dozens forced to get collected by a sober driver (prob mum or dad lol) due to being outside licence conditions etc and plenty of tickets given.

One wonders with the incoming national govt the police are more confident it’s time for no mucking about. Also a recent news article shows these “ donuts” have also been breaking into farms stealing petrol etc. Rural communities had gutsful especially after the storm where the closed roads prob gave them peace and quiet.

The blowback from this is with urban creep these car morons are pushing out further it what used to be mostly empty roads only used by farmers, rural contractors and motorbikes. Unfortunately I can see fast bikes being lumped in with the car hoons. So take it easy folks in rural areas the worlds not what it used to be.
