Does it really get that hot here?
Actually I struggled a bit in Auckland. But that because we gor stuck in gridlock. Dreadful place.Well, you live in Wellington. It gets a bit warmer in other parts of the country.
Auckland is a great place to live, but we keep it quiet as there's too many people here already.

People who argue we need more people for the economy or some reason have rocks in their head.

Take it easy and enjoy the ride. May need to consider which side is easier to mount.
Left is natural but rib injury made me reconsider and now I often go from right. At least on roadbike.

Maybe have a wee practise getting on and off. I find it a bit difficult sometime to swing the leg up and over the higher pillion seat esp if the panniers are on. Every now and then i get on with the main stand and even the side stand taking all the weight of me getting on. As i said one other time I be happy to go with you

But at Masterton the trip computer said I had 14kms in reserve so no worries. Met a guy with a CF-Moto 675 triple, he said it was really good. Wonder how they arrived t that capacity and config?

But it's almost too quiet with the new helmet (Shoei NXR2) and I may look at having some earplugs made which let certain frequencies through so I can hear the exhaust.
There are some great rides in the central North Island, but you really need to stay the night somewhere if coming from Auckland. It's been a while since I've done 550 km in a day on the R1 and I'm still recovering!

Sent from my SM-S938B using TapatalkI use the Alpine MotoSafe ear plugs. They do a great job of blocking out the wind noise but still letting a certain level of the other sounds through. It's better than an aftermarket can in terms of the audio effect, as without the wind noise the bike sound is easier to hear, even though it is quieter overall.
After a few years of using them, if I'm without the ear plugs even the wind noise at 50 km/h seems unbearably loud these days.
I second your point about the central North Island. I have family in Masterton, so I get to take the bike down a couple of times per year. I've got the route pretty nailed down now, so that I can mostly stay on the back roads, ride around towns rather than through them, and spend as much time on motorcycle friendly roads as possible. It is nice to stay midway to allow for a slightly longer time riding I'm well overdue a trip through the Forgotten World Highway.
I miss the days when I trained for distance riding and would think nothing of doing a 1000km ride. It made it easy to get to some out of the way places and ride roads that I'd never ridden before. With sufficient training, trips like that didn't even feel high effort.
Hopefully, those days will return soon now that I've finished studying for a degree which ate up most of my free time over the past six years.
I have the day off work tomorrow, so plan to get up early and go for a decent length ride. I still need to decide where to go and which bike to take though.

Thanks, I will check out the earplugs. The NXR2 is quiet enough to ride without earplugs up to about 100, unless you open the top vents.
My last trip on the FWH was over a year ago while they were finishing the sealing. Fortunately, I was on a V-strom and not the R1 as it was a bit sketchy in places, but it should be all finished now.
I'd recommend going through Ohura if you're coming down from Auckland. That's a fun road!

Wellington. What a Glorious day.
To clean up the garage.
I mean really. This has gotten silly.
Finally reached Ground Zero with the bench.
Projects keep getting piled up on it. Get a box and tidy projects into it then clean.
After this picture I then extended a frame i was using as a shelf then sorted circlips, orings, fittings not in filling. Then my top drawer.
Not quite as good as a ride but satisfying.
Ok now for BBQ. Really. Sitting here in TShirt and Boxers (quite private) .

Nice sunny day for a ride. Decided a loop up to Pahiatua,Mt Bruce for a late lunch and then home.Up to 25 deg a bit warm for the old Leda jacket. Wind noise partly dealt with with a givi screen extender. Its a bit narrow. I seem to be sitting ina relatively still bubble of air but still have very loud wind noise at time, even with foam earplugs. A lot of air comes up through the fairing. Was quite windy at times though.
Took a little detour at the top of Pahiatua Track to get some wide views over PN

On my last bike, I tried 2 different screens but went back to standard. You want the turbulence at chest level, otherwise you will get wind noise, plus buffeting if you're unlucky.
You might feel differently if you live somewhere cold in winter, but it works for me in Auckland.

Dunno what it is I had exactly the same problems with my old r100gs,I rode without the screen at all,it didnt solve the problem. It is def better with the high screen. It was also slightly better with the hand protectors off. Cant see how that works!
The next step will be to try an gs adventure which has a different shaped screen and wind management at lower levels .

Yes, it's a 99. The calliper pistons were corroded and replacement pistons and seals were expensive. It was cheaper to buy a mint set of used callipers off a 2002-03 R1, which have ceramic-coated pistons. The plan was to fit the gold spot pistons to the blue spot callipers, but all the part numbers are different, so I played it safe and swapped the callipers.

As far as i know the pistons fit, they have different part numbers as the gold spots have titanium nitrate (i think coated) aluminium pistons.
A lot of this similar Yamaha stuff can use brembo pads.
there is even brembo gold calipers in Yamaha spacing as per XJR1300r.
Early blue spots had that external linking line. Later ones don't have these nor do the gold ones.
Blue spots IMO are some of the prettiest calipers ever mass produced.
gold spot seals are suposed to be a 1/3 of the price no idea why?

Yes, the gold spot seal kits are different, and cheaper. I remember that the OE piston and seal kit for the blue spots was expensive.
The 2015- R1 uses the same pads, so there is plenty of choice. I didn't know they were Brembo pads though.

Some of them are Brembo on the later versions some it seems are not?
funny enough i just looked up which ones were the same pads as the brembo goldlines and it was the 6 pistons 2007–2014 which have a pad for 2 pistons and a separate pad for one of the other pistons.
Pretty sure the rears are the same for nearly all r1sand these are pretty generic over a lot of brands
the gold anf the the blue spots wer made by Sumoto or what ever they were called that make the gold ones on the earler FZR/TZR 4 pots.

I put Blue spots on my yzf750sp. Need a slight trim of the webbing between the mounts.
The pads needed a slight bevel to not hit the floating buttons of the disc.
Much improved over the 6 pots.
Also needed is the 14mm master cylinder as the have 5/8 std (15.8).
I'd imagine the singles would go down a size too.

The 6 pot callipers weren't exactly loved by owners. The pad sets are expensive and maintenance was no fun.
The blue and gold spots were made by Sumitomo. The gold spots I bought came with slightly worn Sumitomo pads, so definitely near new! A set of braided lines, m/c kit and sintered pads resulted in pretty decent brakes. Some owners fit radial m/c's but I've never felt the need to do that, plus they are a very tight fit.
I tried a few different pads before settling on Brembo SC, which had the great advantage of working when stone cold - we live at the top of a steep driveway. I don't like the SR as much, although they last far longer.
I bought the R1 about 10 years ago. It was in great cosmetic condition, although it soon became clear that the previous owner had spent far more time cleaning than servicing it! But nothing serious, except most of the electrical components have been replaced over the years.

Yeah I was intending to put the upgraded clutch springs in the Cf Moto today. Lay it on its side and you don't even need to drain the oil. Have a nice slightly raised grass section next to driveway that I can lower it gently onto the crash bars.
. . . But not today!

Sons CBR600R sump is so deep we can take off the cover with it upright maybe only lose 20ml of oil.

Yeah but I need to clean to cover and gasket face spotless to apply 3Bond. There's no gasket. Maybe I'll lie crash bars onto an old milk crate. Make it easier to pick up.
Absolutely calm now. Dirtbike loaded for Wellington Tip ride. If (when ) the wind picks up it is nasty on those hills.

We've had strong westerlies and showers for the last 2 days. Hopefully Monday will be better.

A slight improvement but not a day that says "Let's go for a ride". Not a great Anniversary weekend but still better than 3 years ago...

I rode from Auckland to Masterton and back over the long weekend. The weather was good for the most part today, but on Friday and Saturday it was less so. The rain somehow managed to get into my Tom Tom Rider 550 GPS, and possibly my Cardo intercom as well. So much for being sealed units.

Sent from my SM-S901E using TapatalkThere should be a special IP category for NZ. I've done some work with complex instrumentation over the years, and the standard response after reporting a problem with waterproof equipment was "It hasn't leaked anywhere else in the world."

I keep forgetting to take pictures at Trials.
They were already taking down sections but you could see where.
Glorious day of riding. Wind up a bit which is a shame as bbq guests planned later.

I was a bit late leaving this morning and ended up riding home on a very hot afternoon. But it was stunning in the North Waikato. I tried to find somewhere to stop to take photos, but the backroads have no shoulder, and the grass doesn't get cut anymore. To compensate, here is a photo of Lake Waikare in the spring.
One day I should do a ride and concentrate on taking photos. But those roads are just too much fun... https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20260201/ce556d0ef624674c4324c1fceb933094.jpg

Nice. But yeah like on Trials I'm so concentrated on the sections I forget photos, I've found myself road riding and going to heckmwith it, it's too fun to stop.
Bit stiff now, fell over a couple of times in comedy roll overs.
