Safer mirrors for XV250 VStar 250 (2020) - looking at Oxford or Whites mirrors.

Hi Kiwibikers!

I bought a Yamaha XV250 in ChCh 3 weeks ago. Rode it back to Wellington. Pulled over 150 times to let cars pass me. :)
Each time I checked a mirror I had pull my torso to the opposite side and scrunch down. Not cool - I love checking behind me!
I'm 5' 9''.
This was never a problem on my Honda XL250 25 years ago - it had big happy mirrors that I could scan without body movement.
Looking for replacement mirrors.

Whites has replacement mirrors but they don't provide info on dimensions.

Any suggestions or advice thanks on replacing the stock puny mirrors?
Why are they so low and small?
I figure I need mirrors that go up and out at 45 degrees?
I don't care about bike aesthetics - this is strictly about safety for me.

Funnily we were talking, well I was, about tiny mirrors in the motosocial thread yesterday.

Stock ones are too short it looks.

Oxford ones definitely address that. But if you look at the scale, the actual reflectivity bit looks pretty incy as well.

They aren't as big as similar GN250 ones in that style.

Beware some brands have different threads. Yamaha will be all the same you would think and I would bet on.

These look bigger and local bikeshop should be able to get them in so can ask for fit. Cheap as too.

I wondered if there was an mirror "extender" thingie available. These are better than I imagined - solid and simple. I will store that information thanks.
My instinct is big round mirrors like my XL250 from the past.
Perhaps I'd chillax if I could just see the existing ones with the extenders.

Caseye you have an XV? Bigger one? Random question do you favour your foot brake? :)

So I used to be a (trainie) riding instructor back when GN250s were new.
We hated them. Huge dive at the front because of extended soft forks, which scared people from using the most effective brake on the bike.

On one course there was this cute chick on a new GN and inspite of the flatter bars she had on she was struggling with the slalom course. (As they all did with GNs)

I put her on my CBX550 (ok it was a long time ago, but preferential treatment) and she rode once around the carpark once and then through the slalom first time.

OK I didn't know that about the Ironhorse. So far I don't really like my xv250. :)
I prefered my XL250 (25 years ago).

I'm keeping the XV250 for 6 months to get some return from my spend.

KTM 390 Adventure might be more my cup of tea...

My 765RS had bar end mirrors. They were the best bar end mirrors I've ridden with as they were bigger than the aftermarket ones on mate's bikes I've ridden.

But I put them on the shelf and snaffled the old std ones from my 675. I hated having to look down and sideways rather than just sideways.

Ride a few bikes when you are ready, you might surprise yourself. But the 390 looks great.

I had an XR250A I used on the road a bit too much. Terrible tires, 23" front wheel, weedy front brakes. Neighbour's XL was better, not having full knobblies, but 1980s trailwings were not that much better.
Fun times though.

Hell no, mostly the front, got twin rotors up there these days and with the new / old 10yrs or more now, stainless braided lines, the front stops Looooonng before anything else.
Bigger yes, a TR1 XV 1000, shes going on the market this year, riding the AT (Africa Twin) mostly these days, time for some room back in the garage.:drinknsin
On the mirror extenders, be sure to get the right ones (they are made for all types/makes), I've used them on all my bikes including the AT, nothing works better.

OK if the bike store has some I'd like to check them out thanks. I like the idea of the wider field of vision, not sure about the looking down as mentioned by F4 Dave.

I can see that this would sort a lot of people. They keep their original mirrors and get a wider field of view with a small rise in height.
