View Full Version : Michelin tyre shortage

If you've tried to buy Michelin Road 5 or 6 tyres recently, you probably know that there is a shortage and some sizes are unavailable.
I have heard that it could be months before another shipment arrives, so if you might need a new Michelin soon, it could be worth buying one now.

There was a post on FB about this today, someone claiming the importer was going into receivership. Of course it's FB but still.

Yeah , when I got my set of Road 6's a couple of months ago, the shop said that ? (Honda Palmy Nth)
In fact they could only get two sets like mine , so they grabbed both. Magic tyre by the way. :msn-wink:

Always gotta plan/order stuff three months ahead these days for just about anything. Globsl supply chains are still trying to find their happy place. Dont forget there’s a war on in Europe so various components/compounds maybe diverted to other use

A quick google shows that the distributor for Michelin motorcycle tyres in NZ is Northern Accessories Ltd. Who are now in receivership. Apparently a new distributor is being arranged.

The provincial type shops might have stock, but when I was in Cycletreads (which is as close to the import source as possible) a couple of weeks ago, several Michelin tyres I wanted were completely missing, we're talking 180/55/17 and 110/80/19, pretty common sizes...
You could get 190/55 etc, but didn't suit my needs.

Boyds has Road 6 in some sizes - I had a 120/70 and 190/55 fitted to the R1 this week. But there haven't been 180/55 for months now.

Yeah, I just rang them this morning, no 180/55/17 and 110/80/19 in Roads.
The CB919 isn't really suited for 190/55 in the swingarm, plus it's taller with the mudguard etc.

I remember when sports bikes started coming out with 190 section rear tyres. We all balked at the higher price these tyres were due to shorter supply and nearly everyone I knew just carried on buying 180/55 with the added bonus of slightly sharper turn in.
Unless your a GP track god and regularly distract days you never needed that minuscule extra contact patch.
I guess some of todays bikes prob have slightly wider rear rims forcing you to buy 190/200 section tyres.

Depends. It seems (at least to me) a lot opted for the 190/50, which was worse than the 180/55 profile wise. The 190/55 was a good tyre, while the 190/50 ran out of tyre way too quickly.
On the other side, on my 1090R, I have a 150/70/18, but throwing a tape over it, the tyre is actually 165 across the tread blocks. Seriously chunky, but also very handy. Just glad there is enough clearance everywhere for such a difference.

You should match the tyre to the rim width. 180 on a 5.5", 190 on 6". I've seen tyre profile diagrams that show this clearly, but didn't save them. A 190/50 on a 5.5" rim has almost the same profile as a 180/55 on the same rim.

Michelins were in stock... for a few days.
Another shipment coming before Xmas, guessing that won't last long either...

After the puncture earlier this year, I'm checking the rear tyre after every ride. The Road 6 doesn't seen to collect small chips like the 5 did.
I was going to write a quick review on them, but probably not much point with the lack of availability!

A decade or so back I ran Angels on the Ducati and liked them. Memory suggests the GTs were for heavier bikes. I can't check that at the moment because the Pirelli site is down for maintenance.
BIKE said something along the lines of, gimmicky tread pattern but pleasing performance.

The Angel GT is the Mk 2 version of the Angel. To make it sillier, there is now an Angel GT II.
In the Michelin Road world, the GT versions have a stiffer carcass for higher loads and speeds.

Ha I’m a little same after first one in long time last year. I’m pretty active in scanning for debri ahead on surface. In 30 years of riding I’ve probably only had about 5-6 proper punctures if I don’t include self inflicted pinch flats on tubes.

Well ordering a 110/80/19 and 180/55/17 didn't prove much of an issue. One was in stock, the other ready within a couple of days. Now I'm stocked with a spare for every wheel (half a dozen of them) :niceone:

Michelin Road?
Yup, Road 6. Collecting today however, I found out the 110 front was the last they had on the racks from Northerns days, and the rear they'd ordered a while ago, and my timing was just really good.
Still, I'm now stocked up on all bikes for at least a full set on top of whatever the current have left.

Without trying to turn this into a general tyre thread, any opinions on the Bridgestone S22? The Striple has one on the back, and a Michelin on the front. My tyre expertise runs more to adventure and knobblys, so a whole new ball game for me. Will be riding like an old woman for a while so not likely to be wearing out soon.

I'm a believer in matched pairs but am currently in a similar situation to you. I was running Dunlop but decided to change Michelin so I have one of each. Plan A is to replace the Dunlop with a Michelin when necessary - assuming I can get one.

Two guys down here have gone to Pirelli Angel GT IIs......One swears that they are good, the other is fitting them now.
I just moved from the Angel GT 1s to Dunlop Road smart fours which after a few hundred KMs feel like an improvement.
My Dunlops are made in Japan but a mates who fitted the Dunlop Sportsmart are made in France and my old Pirellis were made in China.....if any of that is worth mentioning,

Watching a few Youtube videos of 2025 bike releases, many of the bikes have what looks like to me , Michelin R6s.
Maybe that is why there are none out here.

There is a shortage in NZ because Northern Accessories went broke earlier this year and couldn't order any. Darbi are now the Michelin agent, not sure why the shortages have continued?
I'm checking my rear Road 6 after every ride...

Or have multiple bikes and switch when the tyres need changing... Only thing is, it multiplies your problem. I have a stack of 6 tyres for 3 bikes. Brilliant planning (not) on my part, all wheels are different, so no tyre fits another wheel.

Especially after the rugby.

Yes, there are good alternatives. I nearly bought the Roadsmart 4 for the R1, but found a set of Road 6 cheaper than the Dunlops.

Same problem on mountainbike. Bought aftermarket lightweight wheel set. Of course there’s just enough differences in manufacturing that the brake disc offset just enough to matter… making swapping wheels between commute and forest a pain.
