Fuck you got me all excited! I thought they had reopened the maungamukas early! That may still happen this year…one of the best roads I have ever ridden!

Fuck you got me all excited! I thought they had reopened the maungamukas early! That may still happen this year…one of the best roads I have ever ridden!

The brendewyns are not a patch on the mighty maungamukas!


Riding through there recently it looks like a whole lot of slips waiting to happen next time it really rains. Replacing that section of road should be the absolute top roading priority for the government.

remember the mangamukas from the late 50s-early 60s, gravel, narrow n windy like the rest of sh1 back then (nothing much has changed) ... 2 loooong days kaitaia to akld driving - the marine report became a major travel factor - the other roads out, thru stillwater and broadwood, were flatter, less prone to slipping but flooded badly - all still great rides today - pity i wasnt into bikes back then ... its a nice place to be retired, shit if you have kids

brynderwyns were closed again yesterday - get used to this - seems using pte contractors for civil works is like handing over a blank cheque - absolutely no incentive to complete the job in time nor do a good one - driving thru, looking at the cuts, its obviously designed to be a cash-cow - watched same shit happen with the extn thru to warkworth ... ka-ching, potholes = ka-ching ...

...wtf - rain radar shows a only few showers offshore, think i will drag the old girl out and blast down thru waipoua forest to dargaville for a meat pie brekkie n back along the river to mangatapere, up the valley to kaikohe, okaihau, horeke, rawene for coffee and home - be back in time to chop kindling for tonight

... funny that - roosters in particular seem to be taking over all sorts of odd corners in northland - a whole family has taken residence in the view-point carpark top of pakia hill, hokianga heads, at the end of our road



do you catch the ferry or double back? Thats 1 part of NZ that i havent spent much time in

... i live on the sth side, my side trip to rawene was more for coffee and to check-in on a cousin ... its a top spot, worth a visit, great fishing, 'the winterless north' - except for riding, i havent worn shoes or socks in years

... i like to turn down the gravel rd to pawarenga, have a dip in the swimming hole under the bridge, shoot over to pungaru - just cos i can - will often climb the hill above matai urupa at motukaraka for the peace and the view down over rawene and the inner harbour, have a quick smoke n watch for the ferry

... countdown do a pretty good chicken too, are the tuatua beds still functioning at tokerau - we used to bob up n down in the waves picking the buggers with our toes as kids

I did do the turn off before Broadwood and ended up in a gravel road Track and came out at some small settlement with a cemetery on the hill and proceeded onwards to the coast where I gave way on the bridge to the roaming horses and the noticed the cows out on the beach , I came back around the harbour and past the ferry terminal, now when summer comes I will stop at some new landmarks
I’m not the best rider on gravel so those journeys are slow 2nd or third gear for me
Not much in the way of tuatua although sometimes a good tide will bring me a snack
I am a new-by here at paradise only been here 4 years

It is great riding up there. Last summer a group of us did a loop up the west coast to Rawene, then across on the ferry, back to the Bay of Islands, down the coast road from Russell, then back to Auckland. Will do a side trip to Pungaru next time.

... hope youre confident riding gravel roadsIt's sealed from Kohukohu to Panguru, but is a bit rough in places. I drove it in May but it should be a good ride on a motorbike.

... naya - its not quite that bad - the road we live down is worse, the view is pretty awesome tho
