There are a couple of tricky mystery checkpoints to find this time.

Is anyone prepared to swap the location of Checkpoint 9 (which I need) for any of the others (which I have)?

A PM will keep a secret!

I have only found 6 so far and not that one either :)

Some are very tricky to find. Two have been previous checkpoints, so those were easy to confirm. If you track down #9, let me know and we can do a deal!

So these mystery checkpoints. Are they (or at least some of them) on the route that you will take for the "preplanned" halls?,ie you will pass them as you go from hall to hall? Some may well be on the route you will take to find the other halls? How the hell do you find them before hand?

Ah, the million dollar question. The quick answer is yes, three of them are on the pre-planned route, one is just off that route by a few yards, but not easily noticed. Others are a long way off (as in, nowhere near!) and only will be found in advance. I've used a number of techniques; two I knew straight away are checkpoints from previous TT2000s, Google Lens gave me two more, and hours of Google Street View (hours!) and Satellite View provided more. There's never been 10 Mysteries before, and some of these are really obscure.

I tried looking for a database of halls but not much luck. I have found some really obscure stuff with google lens but i just never thought of that to find a community hall.Street view yes but i cant even begin to recognise any of those mysteries

And putting a bike in the front of the pic stuffs up Google lens. You get recognition of the bike not the background.

Cunning.

Cunning. You can use AI to remove the bike and fill in the background. Newer Samsung phones can do this.

Ask anyone who knows me if the terms "AI" or "cellphone" mean anything in my life.

Just as well I'm not riding the TT2000 isn't it.

This is the only Mystery Checkpoint that I have left to find. Seems like it is the one that everyone is stuck on. Like others Ive searched data bases for halls to no avail & spent hours upon hours on google maps much to amusement of my family!!
Someone must know where it is!
Curses upon but also well done to the organisers!!

I have my route planned, including all the Mysteries and I even get to spend a night at home.

Night at home? I reckon that'll be Friday night.

My plan includes all the mysteries, too, so I'll probably see you along the way.

Correct. It does mean that I am going off track slightly to add more distance on Friday, but Saturday and Sunday are pretty much the shortest route to get all the Mysteries and finish, with as many other halls as possible on the direct route.

I'm following a similar plan - the mysteries forming the basic route. What's your km to cp ratio?

All 10 Mysteries plus 30 'Hall Hunt' checkpoints over 2000km gives me an average of 50km between stops.

That said, the longest distance between CPs is 130km (twice) and the least is 10km (several times).

I hadn't actually worked that out before you asked. Its 35.7

I think the date change has affected entries this year.

Hi all, is there anyone out there that could possibly provide some clues on mystery 9? I have all the others and would be happy to share them out if they are needed. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Chris, I sent you a Visitor Message (replying to yours) a few days ago, but maybe it hasn't got through.

I've resent it by Private Message. Have a look in your Inbox.

Cheers,
Dave B

Had a great weekend riding.
Greymouth on Thursday night, Picton on Friday night, Otautau on Saturday night and Makikikhi on Sunday night. Home again on Monday.
3098 km with 2000 of them between midday Friday and midday Sunday.

I ended up dropping 2 of my planned checkpoints but picked up 6 others. Now going through my photos to make sure they all show what they should show, On Day 1 I tried Sir Taz's trick of having the T-shirt permanently attached to the bike, but the extra time spent trying to park the bike meant that on day 2 and 3 I went back to my old method of draping the T-shirt on the bike.

Likewise done and dusted.

Nine mysteries, 33 hunted halls (3 found by chance on the Saturday), and exactly 2000km (odo, that is, not real km).

Kaikoura Friday night, Otautau Saturday night, and back to Wanaka on Sunday arvo.
