Not sure if you guys are aware of the recent news.

Moving forward we will have to cover 37% of the injury costs us and our passengers sustain. Also the levy for a 500cc motorbike rise by $23 next year and then rise by another $121 the following year.

It's almost the same tactics as they use on smokers to stop smoking.

Does anyone understand the justification for the increase in levies from 25% recovery to 37%? If this continues, then very few people will be able to afford to ride motorbikes.

At least there is the discount for advanced training, but that won't fully offset the increases.

Although paying ACC sucks it’s prob quite cheap to the alternative possibilities.

Alternative number one is incorporating it into general taxation. Just like tobacco, alcohol and fuel excise levies it would be getting increased every year.

The other is to go the American route and be able to sue the other party(if there is one) and have private medical insurance. Also you’d want lawyer fees covered by your bike policy too. And with the way everything’s getting jacked up lately that would just turn into expensive long drawn out litigation nightmares and person who can afford better lawyer would win.

At the moment at least it’s a fairly straightforward process financially and legally while your laying in a hospital bed.

Compared to other household expenses these days acc levies are a bargain apart from the sting for multiple bike ownership.

Yes, we are apparently a special case compared to every other category paying a motor vehicle levy, given they removed the Vehicle Risk Rating element from other petrol vehicles back in 2019. So it’s OK for someone driving a Dodge RAM to cross-subsidise someone driving a Nissan Micra, or a Yamaha Tricity for that matter, but two-wheels bad (unless you’re a cyclist).

Given the number of new claims involving cyclists, buses and pedestrians combined are equal to (or slightly more than) the number of new claims involving motorcycles, I feel like there’s definitely an agenda here.

It is an agenda to phase out motorcycling from NZ, without overtly stating they are taking your freedoms, because YOY it sits in a red cell on their excel balance sheet.

It’s a bit hard to find the details, but here’s the gist of it:


Motorcyclists are calling an almost 80% increase in ACC levies “punitive and inequitable”.

Motorcycle Advocacy Group New Zealand spokesperson Terry Leach said people were choosing not to register their motorcycles because they just could not afford to.

This would only increase when the levies went up from $297 to $532 in three years, he said.

Of course this is from the mainstream media (https://www.thepress.co.nz/nz-news/360521183/motorcyclists-object-punitive-acc-levy-increase) so may well still be considered horseshit in the minds of some.**

** Actually reading further, looks like the dollar amounts used here might be a bit dodgy, so take with a grain of salt; but the percentage increase quoted at the beginning of the thread is on the ACC website (https://www.acc.co.nz/about-us/our-levies-2/levy-results#2024-levy-consultation-), if not the actual levy amounts. We’ve got till 1 July 2026 until they start to take effect.
