I'm keen on doing this again but its the same weekend as the Nationals at Puke which I would also like to go and watch so will decide closer to the date.

Akitio is out Herbertville way - hence the name coast to coast - west to east. It's a fundraiser for the rescue helicopter or Lions or something like that (memory deserts me!), you get a badge and free lunch.

I've done it once, and once was enough for me - although I have heard the riders have been better behaved in recent years. I started after most of the riders but after the lunch stop I had two idiots overtake me on a corner in the windy stuff leading out to Herbertville - one on the inside of me and one on the outside. Needless to say, I wasn't impressed, but I felt a lot better when I got a few corners on and found both of them in the ditch! I tooted, gave them the finger and kept riding!

I heard that last year and the year before the police presence seemed to moderate the idiotic behaviour that has been evident some years.

Ive done it a few times. Pretty relaxed riding from Himitangi To Woodville. Awesome winding roads from Woodville to Akito. Police do have a reasonably strong presence these days but saying that, they dont ruin the day. One year an officer on a police bike ended up in the drain on a straight forward corner. And another year I was near the front of the front pack, whice was led by an officer riding a TL1000 and we were riding quicker than 160kph, on windy country roads.

I'll be leaving from Havelock North and happy to ride at any pace. Will be meeting people in Dannevirke and Palmerston.

I'm going to go, this will be fifth year running.
Great day out, get to see all shapes and sizes of bikes and riders.

The map shows the general route (blue line) Some of the back roads can be a bit dodgey. All in all it's a good day out.

Here's some shots of last years run

Yeah sounds like the cops turn a bit of a blind eye on this event as far as speeding goes. Velox reckoned they were even stopping traffic at intersections for the bikers. Havent done it myself so I dont really know much else about, guess we'll just have to wait and see! :stupid:

Velox
24th October 2005, 23:37
Yep - I'll be there. Bit of fun last year. It was a bit disturbing being very closely surrounded by 400 other bikes as I rode along though - just means you need to be really alert to what everyone else is up to and ride reasonable 'predictably'.

yip a mate and myself are booked on ferry to come up went last year and was a good ride well organised and police where realy good. as far as heaps of other bikes around you it only seems to be at the start and leaving stops you soon find a group of people with the same pace and i think most paces are catered for. i think pics above show the great variety of bikes and riders its worth ago and supports westpac trust helicopter which is an awesome service see ya there :headbang:

We'll be there again this year, last year we rented a house and the year before that we camped the night.

It's a great ride and it's an amazing feeling leaving Himitangi with 400-500 bikes.

Closer to the time we should organise a meeting point, perhaps Caltex Mana?

It would be good to know who's staying the night as well, we could get on the booze.

Anyway...here's the other link about the coast to coast. (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=16729&highlight=coast)

Quite a few do ride home the same day but quite a few stay as well. I'd suggest that you book a campsite in advance if you're thinking about staying, even if you don't use you'll only be a few bucks out of pocket.

The feed they put on is pretty good and they normally have kareoke(SP?), last year there was also a bonfire on the beach and a couple of dudes with A100s (or similar) had a bit of fun doing burnouts.

That was Doug Green(Pickle) and co on their CT110's.
We couldnt really stand the kareoke so started the bonfire on th beach. Am pretty sure we had more people on the beach than in the pub at the end of the night.

I went last year for the first time. I had two riders who were relative novices (Owned their big bikes for less than 12 months), and they had a ball. I really enjoyed the ride too. The riders were very well behaved. The Police did a great job. The whole thing was very well Organised. Even the fuel stop in Woodville was brilliant. There was a guy in the forecourt going around and collecting money and writing down the pump details. They must have sold about 2800 litres in that hour (400 bikes @ 7 litres each). I came back last year, and it made it quite a long day. This year I am thinking of staying and having a well deserved beer at the end. See you all there, you won't regret it.

Yes, the road is seal all the way there, apart from the road works last year, but it was all well signed.

Why do they call is road works, when it apparently doesn't?

90 minutes is being extremely generous. I'd be real keen to meet up with some wellies folk for the ride up. Would you mind making the stop at the servicestation right next too the big round about in paramata? That way people such as myself coming from the Hutt can all be there too without backtracking. Could call it 0800 - 0815?

I'm from Woodville, so growing up I always used to stand out on the road and watch all the bikes going past. Be cool to actually ride in it!

This is a good ride yes some go a little nuts but there is enough room on the road to allow everyone to get there safely. Just ride within your limits especially if your not used to riding in a group. Be aware of others around you.The ride is worth it.Its for a good cause and the stop at the beach is awesome. Try and stay the night and ride back at your own pace the next day. Be confident Ride safe. Dont be put off by others.

Now take a seat and listen mate....
250's are incredibly underated. They're often made out to be just a 'stepping stone' to a bigger bike and to have little to no guts, but what a load of bollocks. They're the perfect size for flicking around tight corners and ripping open the throttle without any fear of stepping the whole back end out! They're awesome! People who diss 250s are speaking out their :moon: . Don't become a victim of the 250 bashing propoganda ok? Good lad.

I find it funny when I hear 250's being dissed as learner bikes. In England, where I started out, the learner limit is 125cc so 250's are seen as 'proper' bikes. I'm sure if the limit was upped to 400cc then they would soon be dissed.

Good stuff Velox.

Generally the sort of people that put down smaller bikes are ones that need a larger bike to make up for all the time they lose going slowly around corners.

I don't see much point in speeding in a straight line on the road as its the easiest way to lose your license. Straight roads are only transit stages to twisty bits in my opinion.

Last year there was a postie bike and a few very old machines. They have a prize giving thing at the end for things like: person thats come the furtherest, oldest rider male and female, etc. If you did the rally on a minimoto you'd probably get a prize for smallest bike.

Theres lots of police controlling the event especailly at the start as theres a huge amount of bikes involved.

Just remember to fill your bike up with gas at Woodville if you want to make it out as the only other garage is a country one and it was not open all day last year.

Saturday: Morning showers, then fine. Winds becoming light.
Sunday: Mainly fine with light winds.

Masterton
Saturday: Early cloud, then fine. Winds mainly westerly.
Sunday: Mainly fine. Winds generally light.

So other than it being a little damp on the Western coast in the morning, it should turn out to be grand weather for riding.

Hi all. I was not keen at first for the ride due to hearing some dodgy stories in the past about the mass of riders creating a bit of chaos, but I would like to meet fellow KBers, especially from this area, and catch up with any Wellington riders I might know from when I was last part of this forum under the alias phil_elvey. I have a Michelin pilot race tyre on the front of my bike at the moment so I will be a bit hesitant if it's bad weather right across the island. Hopefully it'll be good weather and we will all meet up. I will wear my KB t-shirt if I can.

just checked the weather this morning. It's pretty grey in the manawatu at the moment but it looks we should be clear from any rain on the eastern coast

Well , it was a bloody good run. A couple of casualties/offs. For the most part it was over cast and quite a bit if wet road. Bit of road works but nothing major IMHO, but othing too major. Phantom made it ok, his first and is staying overnight, as did a few other KBer's. About 400 riders on all sorts of kit. Appeared to be quite a few relative newbies riding albeit with grey hairs. Took the GB400 and Douge took his 500 Pantah. It was nice to get away from the main group after Woodville. Normal idiots passing on blind corners including some "marshallers".

Some of the bigger bikes had a good look at the GBs sidecovers as they passed me on the straights lol. Quite amusing to catch back up the them when things got a bit tighter ;)

We caught up with a few folk we both haven't seen in a while. It was nice to see so many lady riders too. Doug and I came back via Weber Dannivirke, Top Grass Rd, and the Saddle Road. Bugger all traffic via this route topped off one plesent days riding.

Totally wicked ride guys. Full credit for the EXTREMISTS who went anyway, despite the shite weather. Mostly fine once we got to Himatangi and awsome roads to the coast. For those pessimists who didnt go, well you missed out big time. Nuff said.

Id have to agree. Two dodgy passing manouvres by marshals and one didnt take too kindly to a 250 taking his rightful place in the pack. Its funny the number of people who line up on the right-hand tire track and dont stagger.

Other than that a well organised event. Darkman and I met up with Dafe at Woodvile and decided to head home via Palmy. I wasnt riding with mates in the morning ride anyway. A good buzz back home.

We've just got back...a little over 600ks in total for the weekend.

Highlight...Riding back from Pongoroa today, absolutely superb.

Lowlight...the cocksucking marshal on the Blue VTR with the pillion. A formal complaint is on it's way to the organisers.

Got fairly wet on the way to Himitangi and again from about Caterton through to Upper Hutt.

The bike is now filthy...might squirt some soap on it and park it in the rain.

Skel...how where did you get to?

Funny, my favourite marshall was on a yellow VTR1000 :). Might have to change my bike preferences.

Great ride. Got to catch up with some old faces too. The only damage suffered was a lost number plate. It was one of those stupid oversized ones, so no great loss. Just a pain. The overtaking manover of the day goes to the rider on the KTM Duke. Took me on the back wheel! Well done. The worst one I did was when I gassed it on the straight to get past some bikes that only go fast in straight lines, and then locking BOTH wheels as I grabbed a little too much brake to filter back into the pack. WOW a twitchey 600 and THREE skid marks! I learnd a new skill!

Had a great ride, just a bit damp at the start but it came to nothing. Was amazed at the dodgy passing maneuvers ( sp ? ) of some but he worst riding I saw was someone one a vtr1000 that I followed for ages that was travelling at sub-nana pace and was all over the road. I was to scared to pass in case he ( or she ) wiped me out and they would probably just have passed the mighty GB on the straights. All in all a bloody good ride, had probably one jug of Tui more than I should of but at least it meant I could sleep through the karaoke. Took off abut 7 the next morning as being of the geographically disadvantaged persuasion, I thought it best that if , or when , I got lost I had plenty of daylight to find my way home. Just to add a bit of excitement my speedo cable had broken just out of Himitangi so I had no real idea of how far I had gone during the weekend, so no idea how much further the petrol would last. Great to meet up with more of the Palmy KBers, never realised how many of us there were:rockon: No longer a Coast to Coast virgin, like some other things now that I have a taste for it I might try it again:blip:

Yep - great day out! I was feeling pretty stuffed by the end of it though. We went back to Wgtn via real nice (apart from heaps of roadworks) backroads that came out at Masterton. It's cool that if you want you can go all the way from Akitio to the Rimutakas withought going on SH2 until the foot of the Rimutakas! (If you go via the Gladstone/Water tower road, which we didn't).

I heard tonight that a guy died on the ride - is that right or just a nasty rumour?

A few years ago someone caught it according to the guys here at work who have done it. They wern't very encourageing about the organisation of the ride, though times change and lessons are learnt, sometimes the hard way. Would have done it this year but the Mrs chose that wekend for our end of year work do, even though I had it marked on the calender for months:bash: Oh well got some OT in Sat night so not all bad ay.

First time coast to coast, was very impressed with the ride and organisation. After weeding me way through towards the front, at one stage thought I may have taken a wrong turn past Pongaroa as did not see any bikes till just before Akitio. Ride back after prize giving was fast and furious, awesome and hardly no slow traffic to contend with.

must agree, top ride, though a lot of folk could do with some "advanced" rider trainin, red vtr firestorm anyone????, we ride on the left over here mate!.
Also a yellow L plate may mean learner, but that doesnt mean pass 10mm off their mirror and cut in 20mm off their front wheel, ridin in a group is bloody good experience for everybody, and I hope a few learnt from it!.
I heard the guy who came off at Akitio had a heart attack, dunno about the result though.

Yip certainly was an awesome day, a most impressive turn out considering the weather didn't look all that stunning. Enjoyed catching up with people I hadn't seen for a while.

Also had an really cool ride home via danivirke, Just slightly faster than the trip there.

Then ended up riding up to ratihi (sp?) on Sunday via the paraparas and back which was pretty cool as well. 800km+ in a weekend isn't too bad going. :first:

Excuse my ignorance but is passing on the inside or outside on a motorbike dangerous?

One point is, whether it is dangerous or not, it is against the law to pass on the left unless you are in a separate lane or the other bike is stationary. i.e. you can't just duck past on the left on a normal two lane road or unmarked country road.

Makes sense, something else that I've read is people freaking about being overtaken on the outside on corners? What's up with that?

some do and did freak on being passed on outside but you shouldnt have to worry about inside unless on the track then its all good. but we where in heavy traffic and he was also going in between people. i think the outside is the only option on the road whether it on one or two wheels. as long as outside corner passing is safe shouldnt be an issue.
