Interesting moan from some who might just have a point.

The author comes across as a moaning arsehole. He's whinging about things happening kilometres from where he lives. Imagine what he's like when something actually gets close to his neighbourhood. There's too much inbreeding in the South Island. :devil2:

Not a fan of the author so I have no respect for his opinion.

I have been riding those roads for 40 years. It's always been a racetrack. I am just pleased to see people out enjoying their vehicles instead of nosediving into their telephones. Hope those dudes had a fun ride, bit of knee down action, and coffee and cake in Lyttelton. Or ride thru to Scumner and get some Sichuan at Miss Peppercorn and annoy the residents of Merivale-on-Sea.

So, in short: fuck that NIMBY wanker.

That's rich coming from someone from New Plymouth.

Thats not journalism, it's a whinge. Not sure what his point was about the IoM TT, I can't see the connection.

I do wonder how some vehicles get a WoF, and it's not just motorcycles causing noise nuisance.

I left police 10 years ago. The only thing that has ever stopped anti social road users behaviour is the earthquakes.

I had had enough of trying to chase the little shits by then.

I left police 10 years ago. did you ever ticket or order off road any vehicles (bikes or cars) for excessive noise? There are extremely loud , straight pipe - mainly Harleys - bikes where I live that seem to blast pass police with impunity.

The noise rules were almost exclusively used against car drivers. I was the motorcycle sergeant, so tended to have some sympathy with motorcyclists.

The problem with motorcycles is the exhaust is on the outside, and is so easily modified by anyone who thinks they can get an extra hp or two from their steed.

Slip-ons generally have one of two purposes

Reduce weight
Increase power

I might add to that list "looks cool, and sounds mean"

Funny, I got a lot of kickback from people with LAMS bikes who had upgraded their exhausts, which effectively voided their LAMS approval.

The retailers who sold those exhausts were getting grumpy when I started to write tickets for those who had the wrong attitude toward the advice I gave them.

Even NZTA didn't want me to enforce it. But what reason would someone have for changing the exhaust on a bike? What, to make it heavier and less powerful?

Yeah right.

most of us ride for enjoyment, adding a nice sound to that that is your sound is adding triggering another sense, the added power is a secondary thing. stupidity is increasing the noise beyond what is comfortable then wearing ear plugs.....n annoying everyone else too

If it's about the noise I will give the same advice I used to give the shit bags in cars. Get some ear buds and stream your noise from Spotify. That way the world doesn't get your fetish inflicted on them.

Well actually... Some years back a Brit mag (BIKE?) had access to a dyne and did some checking. Some aftermarket cans made less power than the standard item.

I was very old indeed when I realised that spending money on suspension and tyres was a better investment than anything else on a motorbike. They're quick enough but making them handle better is the trick.

The VStrom forum had the same experience, less power with the yoshi slip on but the sound was the objective. Some tuning bought that right but most people will not tune an exhaust to get more ponies for road use. Me included.

The one time I did get an ecu modified, the tech told me that most gains are made on the intake side. Not sure if he meant fuel/air or pies. Cos pies is still not working for me, yet!

yip, many mistake a power surge they have to be power, rather it had detuned them through part of the rev range and they were finally breathing right... it's pretty hard to improve on a factory bike

you're confusing the word sound with noise here.

That actually crossed my mind yesterday. When you are riding, the sound of the bike is likely cool. It travels with you, and matches the experience you are having on the bike.

But the people whose houses you pass only hear the noise you make as you approach, pass and ride away.

When they hear that noise multiple times, it's hard to imagine them having an appreciation of the sensory experience you are having on the bike.

i've no appreciation for their dog that barks, the plane noise as they jet off to fiji, their leafblower, the engine braking off the truck that's delivering their gimp suit set, or the rugby game crowd noise they are at either, but I don't run off to the newspapers and whinge.

Comparing this with what was on the bike and another two I have acquired since, it runs best with the OE can. But it's just too quiet.

None of those are intentionally louder than they need to be – I'd suggest it's the intention involved which makes vehicle noise particularly annoying for the general public.

As a young teenager, I was as much convinced that the neighbors appreciated my loud heavy metal music every bit as much as I did, and luckily for them if they did not - they soon would with more exposure :Punk:
Just as I'm equally convinced now - that the aural perfection that can only be obtained by the celestial combination of a high revving internal combustion motor, stark craggy rock faces and large expanses of natures precious h2o.
These people should be down on their knees in gratitude at the heavenly aural tones bestowed upon them by Saint Akrapovič. :innocent:
Sheeeesh Some People huh

Keep working at it! I believe in you! Brisket cheese and jalapeno FTW. With homemade chilli and tomato relish
