A mate had a fire in his garage. He lost an R1 and an Audi v8 and a couple of cycles. But the hardest thing he said was all the tools. You forget half of them until they arent there. Some of the old school ones will be hrd to replace

it was interesting how the auction guy says the demand for the older stuff is dropping as the old codgers die off, i have the same theory with muscle cars, people paying huge money for 70s american and aussie cars because that’s what was cool as they were growing up , the younger guys lust after evo's wrx etc and the really young guys arnt interested in cars

so who’s going to buy all the cars/bikes in the future

i've got bikes from 1902 to 2019, this was always comimg, an example is my 1977 mv agusta was three times the price of a honda then the guys buying them are at least mid 70's now and can't sling a leg over them and are too scared to even move them around, won't be long before RC 30's are in that slot. retro bikes have made old bikes accesible too for those who can't keep old shit good.

Supply and demand I guess but I think genuine classics that are original and running will hold some value. Classic construction machinery and old trucks previously left rusting in fields are now sort after with some even getting put to work as they just don’t break down without any electronics or emissions gadgets.

But after some negotiation with the insurance company, they paid out a decent cash sum and I replaced the hand tools with mostly Repco, which I picked up on clearance through the website.

After a couple of years, I didn't miss the old tools so much. Old Sidchrome socket sets really weren't that great.

auctioneers can often be the type of people who eat their own young
Kieth Staples auction in palmy in 1996 they separated the battiers and manuls paperwork into separate lots, i was asked to identify all the henderson parts which spread 7 years and were a collection of single speed three speed and later three speed parts, they piled them as one and sold them as a project bike, insaying that there's a few people who don't give a toss about any history, they just want something shiny too

For some time now there have been reports that the arse has dropped out of the UK collector bike market. The problem may be rather more substantial than that though because big dealers in current models have been closing their doors. It's not just Brexit fallout either because there's a similar situation in the US.

There are reports that bike sales in the USA are stalled. Bikes just aren't moving. On the other hand neither are trucks. At the same time sales of established bike brands are stalled Chinese bikes are beginning to arrive - Trump's trade war permitting. It's possible major changes in the bike market are underway.

Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

I used to miss a lot of the bikes I grew up on. Until I recently rode an R80RT-P, and realised that it was gutless, has bad brakes and gearbox, was a bit uncomfortable. Can't figure why I still love them.
