View Full Version : Visor Vision!- Part 2

...as well as hating my visor fogging up & dripping on the inside when its cold & wet, another pet hate I have is when my visor gets visually impaired by insects who run into me on the open roads.
I don't think there is any way around this problem, but what I do do is take advantage of the water at service stations and give the visor a good cleanup when the insect-cover is too much- hey I like a nice crystal clear visor okay! Also, I have been known to take a cloth and some glass cleaner with me on long trips just in case s/stns are few and far between.
I think the ultimate solution would be to get those strips put on my visor that the racecar drivers use...just rip off a strip when the bugs get too thick and Bob's your uncle! :Punk:
What is your solution to this problem?

Duck down behind the screen when I'm riding...or follow someone like you and let them clear a path through the insects

Oh no, you're not one of those guys I see on the motorway ducking down behind the screen at 70-80kms are you! The only time I do that is when I am wanting the reach a top speed, and even then I feel like a bit of a drongo dragstrip wannabe.
As far as following me and using me as a shield...do you have the skills to remain that close to me on your Mille??

Staying close is no problem; not hitting you might be:wacko: Depends how long the bungee cords are.:niceone:

I often get to the petrol station and think "I'll clean the visor after I've gassed up". Gas up, pay (or stuff around putting the last few drops in so that the hubby goes in and pays), start the bike, set the tripmeter to zero, ride out, put the visor down and think "oh shit, I forgot to clean the visor....!!"
What?
13th February 2004, 05:23
If I am going for a decent ride, I put a soft cloth in a mini-grip plastic bag and add it to the luggage. Use the cloth to wash the visor at gas stops, then the mini-grip bag keeps the cloth wet, but the rest of my gear dry. Sweatshirt cloth is good - use lots of cold or luke-warm water, never hot (coz it takes the hardening off polycarbonate so it wil scratch more easily)

I've got a Wee Willie!
It's a visor cleaning kit that lives in my underseat storage, but the distributor stopped importing them:( I have a refill left, but after that I'll have to try something different as the cleaning fluid.
It has a spray that doesn't damage your visor, a small sponge, and a wiper blade on the side of spray bottle and a polishing cloth. Takes about 20 seconds to give the visor a quick clean and a minute or two for a total debug.

Cleaning the visor is okay, but my real problem is how to get those tiny little midges out of the air vent holes.
I'm still trying to get out some I picked up in Dannevirke on New Years Day!
As the air vent plastic is riveted in, I can't see how without wrecking the air vents...

Pledge. Any sort works but the "Clean & wipe" is my favourite. Comes in nifty little aerosols that fit easily in your tankbag, etc. High quality silicon. The US Air Force uses Pledge to clean the screens on fighter jets. Fills in those fine scratches you get on plastic. Also water beads up and clears nicely when you're riding in the dristy mizzle or rain. Also good for cleaning the rest of your helmet and your bike. Pledge.

Thanks, I'll give that a trial then! :D

Sure you don't mean Plexus? It was developed for the USAF.
But, yes, Pledge is good on visors provided you don't live in the Waikato. It is bloody awful in the fog.

I have it on good authority that Pledge and Plexus are one and the same -- a bit like Alumagel and Napalm (although the last two aren't recommended for cleaning your visor).

I use a cheap (free from RB when I bought my helmet - cos they couldn't work out what to charge) Visor cleaning aerosol. Can't tell you the name thew label is in french, and at home
Also works as a antifog product but only for a few days at a time.
Disolves insects and oxides (funny to watch) but strips paint.
Fills in small scratches.
Gives your helmet that new car smell. :2thumbsup
I would buy a new tin, I use it once every couple of months to get my visor back to new contition and use servo brushes in between.
The trick with servo brushes is to make sure you swirl first not just pick it straight up. When they sit in their buckets unless it is fresh water they are sitting in a film of dirt, stones, rust and other peoples bugs. If the water is murky I will run it under a tap or give it a miss.

I think they are sold under another brand now. Plastic box or whatever probably has miniture plastic spray bottles you could fill with windolene and do the same job with a good rag.

Could well be the same base. I dunno. But I do reckon Pledge is awful to use in foggy conditions as it smears badly when you wipe the visor. Plexus, or silicone spray, performs much better.

I thought Plexus was a type of glass used for high impact applications like cockpits? or is that Pelixglass?
yeah. use the pledge. when you do hit the bug(gers) it lets you wipe off a lot of the carcasses with a servo towel and still have some anti rain beading ability (when you apply soapy water it inevitably removes what beading the pledge would provide).

Dont you guys have "Fog City" visor inserts?like a plastic film that you stick to the inside of your visor,no more fogging, they work and they now do one that darkens when the sun comes out.Weird law say that tinted visors are illegal but as these are an add-on there not.
Watch out as well because there was a story in RIDE(our top-selling bike mag)this month saying that some visor cleaners can weaken your Helmet if you dont take the visor off and keep the spray well away from the helmet.Autoglym, top sellers of visor spray, say not,Arai say they`ve had a spate of guys complaining about new helmets going bendy at the chin-piece e.t.c. which is pretty scary stuff.

Fogcity is good - but fuck the optics of your visor up sometime chronic and destroy night vision by creating flaring.

For a few years, probably 75% of my riding was in the dark, using a FogCity insert. Yes, it does cause flaring, but you get used to it.

to be honest, in a crash, the visor will inevitably dislodge anyway (mine have!) so i wouldn't worry about it getting weakened too much. how often do you hit birds anyway? (easy to duck even if it does mean taking them on the shoulder Nori Style!)

Another convert to Pledge! It's a shame that Johnson's wax is a family-owned business. Spread the word...

I was put on to Pledge by another rider and haven't looked back.
A lot of dealers with use pledge on bikes also - as it can hide small scratches and poor paint work

pledge is the bomb to finish the bike after waxing it - don't try to balance anything on the tank though - it'll just slide right off. it does a great job on the windscreen and headlight lens too - helps to keep the bugs off it.
makes it smell nice too :)

and the only consistantly reliable anti fog i've ever used, available anywhere, is dishwash detergent polished off the inside of the visor. i get about 500 k of all weather riding out of a single polish. use good quality detergent, and a soft kleenex to polish it until it's dry.

it is the only antifog i have tried, being too cheap to buy any of those fogcity inserts. Tried it after riding with the visor up and getting a very wet, cold face for a while and never looked back.... sometimes the simplest things work best :2thumbsup
