Coromandel loop?

A friend has been given the weekend off and the hire of a VFR800. We would like to do the "Coromandel Loop" but not quite sure what the "loop" is.

Does anyone know a good site with maps etc.?

Would like to do that Saturday then head back Sunday. Anyone know a good road on the way back to Auckland - both North Shore Boys......

But I guess you can go over your favourite bits (of road that is).

I suggest going from Thames to Coromandel, only because there is less "rubble" on the left side of that patch of road than if you were to come down from Coromandel to Thames.

Also, seeing as you are going to be there for 2 days, go all the way.... down to Waihi. The road is lovely from Whangamata to Paeroa.

Aaaah...... I think I will stop dribbling at this stage and go out and sit on my bike.......and dream...... roads.... Coromandel...... :love:

Hey ya mate, awesome road it is, one of the best around.

Try wises.co.nz, i guess.

But from Thames carry on along the coastline and up over the hill, this brings you down into Coromandel township, from there you head up and over the next hill, which will then open up afterwards and take you to whitianga, follow the signs out and carry on through towns with names that i dont know, some place begining with T and so on, this brings you to the Hikuai Junction (turn off to whangamata), if you have time do this bit of road out to whangamata and carry on to waihi, from there you can either come back to hikuai or go through the gorge to paeroa. Going back to hikuai is better though.

Roads back to Auckland, you can always go round the coast through kaiua and onto kawakawa bay into the back of clevedon??? Thats a nice leisurely way to end a ride.

do it in a day.. set off from Auckland around 9 or 10, and you'll be back at home with a nice cuppa by 5 or 6.. if you want to make a weekend of it, then that's fine, but it isn't hard to make it an easy days ride. Like TLD shows, head on SH1, take the Tauranga SH2 turn off, then take signs for Kopu/Coromandle (forget the SH number), then fill up at the Mobil station right in front of you at the T junction (you can't miss it) then decide if you want to go left or right. If you turn left, take the first left and then just sit on that road all the way round pretty much. If you turn right, just point the bike and ride.. You'll love it

i just lost my viginity on the loop on labour weekend. god it was good for a first time.
and excellent roads. i thought it was a long trip and was looking at doing it in a weekend. but a day is all you need.
it isn't really that long. even from the shore it's not too bad.
if your 2 up it might slow ya down a bit. but on your own na 1 day it's a piece of cake. it does not feel that long. espically for a first timer.
just pick your day and go for it.

it's 25A. follow the coastal scenic route. if you do go thames coromandel town, you need to turn off just as you get into coromandel, next to the fire station. if you go into coro town, all the roads past there eventually turn into gravel.

follow your nose, then just after the pauanui turn-off (gas station and tractor place on the corner by a largeish bridge), if you turn left after the set of bridges, you'll go to whangamata, then on to waihi and back up through paeroa to kopu. if you go straight ahead instead of turning off to whanga you'll end up at kopu in about 30ks.

it's 25A.
Actually, it is SH25 all the way from the turn-off on SH2 through Thames, Whitianga, Whangamata, Waihi.
25a is the Kopu-Hik.

It is a great ride, but take it easy - plenty of others have over-cooked it on this road. Some of the corners are deceptively sharp, have rough surfaces and pea-gravel from about this time of year on through the summer.
Take your time and enjoy.

I`ve done it, and reet goodly it were too.......stunning circuit....I remember drinking a quality brandy at somebody`s gaff round them parts:):D):D
