On-board bike video help.

I want to set up a camera on my bike, a discreet one at that. What I would like is a small camera (mounted somewhere up front) with a remote flash memory storage device. I've searched the net, and can only find 'complete' digital video cameras. Actually I have found one but the product doesn't show up in their pricing, I'm waiting for a reply from them. A complete digital camera is too big to be mounted full time and would stand out like dogs balls. Does anyone have any info or experience that they could pass on?

The ones that I have seen are not that discreet as they mount them using the fuel-cap bolts using stainless frames and they are complete video units. I would start looking at digital cameras on Trademe for idea's on whats available :)

Edit - I have seen little "spy-cams" that you can plug-in, but again, they rely on full-on video cameras normally lying around your pack etc

Best deal for this would be a multi media device that accepts AV input such as Archos or Parallel imports also sell a model . You can get them from 20Gb that'll record a few hours of media on hard drive. The best quality device is a Panasonic DV1 mini DV recorder. The recorder is small enough to sit under a seat hump and accepts composite video signal.

yeah, pretty much agree with Jimbo. I've set up something like this before, where you have a small camcorder secured in the boot and then a bullet cam placed where ever you want, and the leads from the bullet cam go to the camcorder. The camcorder records the engine noise etc, but without too much wind noise, which is great. One company (forget who now) actually brought out a camcorder with external lens, pretty much for this purpose!

Digital storage stuff, the quality isn't great. You could play it back on a computer and it'll be ok, but play it back on the TV and it'll look and sound nasty as.. It's very much 'get what you pay for' stuff really

Thanks for the help guys, I've found exactly what I want. Bit more than what I was wanting to spend (about $500-600), probably cost about a grand all up. Should do the job though.

Yeah I did...but it involved mounting the camera (in a perspex box) off the side of the bike.
It gave great results but looked like shit (and obvious as hell).

I'm going to have a look into the bullet cam option at some stage, it would be useful if the current bullet cam could post a short clip of reasonability uncompressed video (to get an idea of the quality) and the details of the cam that you use (model and resolution etc.).
