View Full Version : Pulled by the bacon last night!

The_Dover
27th October 2005, 08:47
I was riding home from the Kaiua chip shop with my lovely young pillion on the back last night, it was about 9.30 and we were trying to get home in time for Sports Cafe.

So, here I was cranking it up the southern between Pokeno and Papakura at a fairly brisk pace, bare in mind it's absolutely fuckin empty, when as I approach the Takanini off ramp I see the bacon up ahead. (Easy to tell the cop bikes cos they light up like a napalmed vietcong village as you approach them.) So I slows it down a good distance back and sneeks up on him like a priest on an altarboy. He slows down to about 80~90 so I pop out and pass him.

Lights come on, oh fuck says I, pulled over, lid off. "Evening h'officer!"

Mr Plod was real nice and polite and advised me that an ambulance I had passed way back before Papakura had radioed in and reported that I was moving rather rapidly. "Furry muff" I says and he reminded me "Time and place sunshine"

I've got problem with the fuzz doing his job on this occasion but this cunt driving the ambulance???? What the fuck is he on? It was an empty motorway, I was not doing ridiculous speeds as I was carrying a pillion and keeping my eyes peeled for cops anyway and it's not like I was carving through traffic like a twat.

I understand these guys in the ambulance see some rather pretty human collages but if you know this guy SpeedMedic give him a fuckin bitchslap from me! It really wasn't necessary to get on the radio like that.

Rant over.

:niceone: to the cop for being a good cunt.

ambos do this all the time in rural areas. for all you know they had just finished dealing with an MVA, and were a little tired of putting crashed riders/drivers back together. didn't your mother ever tell you 'someone always sees you....'?

I can't imagine why an ambo might get pissed off about someone setting themselves up to be their next job...

*555 isn't hard to remember and I've used it a couple of times myself (gotta admit an empty road with a bike out enjoying itself isn't going to get MY attention).

It might be that Ambo driver has seen too many accident - scraped up too many dead people... my uncle was like that. 50 year as a volunteer in the fire service - HATES my bike with a passion but he and I get on REALLY well - especially over a beer.

I asked him about it and it's a simple as that - the blood he's washed off the road would fill the Tasman.

Zed: Yeah mate, I knew it would get attention but I was kinda hoping it would be from chicks that wanted a root!! (Just kidding for those not smart enough to decipher face value)

As for SM, yeah, I knew it wouldn't be him. Not with his record anyway!!

MDU: I understand these guys frustrations, my old man is a SAR pilot on the North Sea so I've heard my fair share of stories, but can't they let us adults take responsibility for ourselves and just do their fuckin jobs? Them grassing us to the cops for going a little quick on an empty motorway really isn't going to alter any statistics whatsoever.

Oh yeah cos we love picking up the bits!

I would imagine that if you weren't doing anything dangerous, he wouldn't have called it in. Don't do stupid stuff round emergency services vehicles - simple really. You may not think you had, but think about this... when we have a patient in the back of the ambulance, our partner is usually unrestrained and moving about doing things for the patient. If we have a really sick person in the back, we may have two ambos looking after the patient. Now think about this - you pull out in front of the ambulance and the driver has to apply the brakes - doesn't need much braking to have someone fall over in the back. In fact any dumbarse maneouvre you make could affect the safety of ambos or the patients. Don't be a dick and learn from this.

Read my words for fucks sake.

I was driving in a straight line on an empty north bound carriageway, not passing anything other than the lamp posts and livestock in the darkened fields.

The Ambo was heading south, lights on.

I full understand the job you have to do, plenty of respect there, and I don't drive like a cunt around any road users to the best of my knowledge. I like to give them the space and respect that I expect.

I wasn't being a dick, I had a pillion to look after. My only crime was doing a little over the pathetic motorway speed limit.

Don't fucken assume I was riding like a twat.

All good - I can see that one from both sides, but talking to my uncle about it (and he's a good bastard)... I wouldn't want to do and see some of the stuff he cleaned up. It'd be upsetting enough.

See Ruiff Raff's first comment. Getting called to something that reminds you of your own mortality has got to be sobering...

The_Dover - I'm not gonna say a comment about your ridin skills or ability.

But last night there was 2 serious accidents that I know of.
One in Williamson Ave, Ponsonby - Pedestrian died after being hit by a car.
The other in Dominion Rd. Dont now details, but serious.

Now just maybe this ambo had just been at the scene of one these serious accidents... and was wanting to prevent being called to another so damn soon... who knows.... but maybe fate was lending you and your pillion a lending hand at that moment.

These guys and gals see so much on the roads.... and they need time to cope between each situation.

Sorry mate, but it sounds like you need to pull your head in. The law is the law and if you don't like it then don't ride. Just because you have a nice new fast bike does not mean you are exempt whenever you see fit. We all cross the line every now and then, its our decision to make but we also have to accept the consequences if we get caught. We don't however have the right to make that decision for our pillions (especially for the sake of some lame TV show) and I guess this is what caught the ambo drivers attention. Can't blame him either, if I saw some looney with a chick on the back I'd be concerned too (even if you were only blatting along the straight, he wouldn't know any better) - the only difference is that the ambo driver can do something about it. When your job is all about saving lives, raining on the odd parade is a small price to pay. Better safe than sorry.

What relevance does my choice of bike have to do with this?

I wasn't caught, I was advised that it was reported I was travelling rather rapidly. It did not stop me and nor will it stop me in the future, I slowed when I sighted the cop as I normally would. I ride to the conditions and put my pillion's safety first at all times. They know that which is why they will continue to ride with me.

You immediately assume I'm a looney because I was going over 100km/h with a chick on the back?

I think we should all be allowed to be responsible for our own actions, the ambo reporting me did absolutely nothing to change my riding it just resulted in the very nice bike cop pulling me over and having a word. If I get a ticket I get a ticket, that I can accept but it hasn't happened yet because I'm pretty cautious about when and where I speed, a quiet motorway in the late evening with good visibility, I should be shot, as opposed ot all these assholes who continue to hammer it around built up areas!

I have no opinion on the speeding or the Ambo part... I have had enough speeding tickets, sunday i was on the back road that goes down to Te Awamutu etc and at least 2 times cars flashing their lights saved me from maybe getting a ticket...cruising speed only 120/130 kph,not doing any harm in my eyes..of course flashing red and blues normally brings back reality. :scooter: .... As far speeding in general i think once you have a quota system there is pressure to perform, just dishing out tickets will not lower the RoadToll...and was more than aware of that as i sat behind a FWD with parents and kids in it on the road out to the coast..winding road,,cutting every corner.

Never really agree with the dobbing in thing. Especially over something as subjective as speed. Think about it .(EDIT: In the general case - ) Someone going the OTHER direction , who maybe is 100 years old, thinks you're speeding, and dobs you in. And a cop gives you a ticket based on the uneducated , untrained opinion of an unknown person - not even going the same way? (I know he didn't ticket in this case) .Dodgy, to say the least.

(EDIT - In the particular instance cited )
In this case Mr The_Dover may have been speeding (or may not - no point admitting anything), but even if he was , who is some ambo driver to judge? And what business is it of his. I don't buy the "oh they have to clean up the mess " argument. Pedestrians get knocked down and killed because they don't look before crossing the road (happened to an ambo driver a while back!). Should drivers start dobbing in pedestrians who don't appear to be paying enough attention when walking along the footpath ?

People get killed when driving or riding at legal speeds. So on the basis of the "we don't want to have to scrape you off the road" , should ambos be entitled to reduce everyone to 5kph? So as to make sure that we're always going to be safe.

And what about non road fatalities. People get killed hang gliding. Rock climbing. Swimming. Are ambos (or anyone else for that matter) going to want to stop anyone they see doing those things too, cos people might die doing them ?

No it was not Speedmedic. It would have been someone on Brown watch (SM and myself are on Blue).

We don't go around dobbing other drivers in as a matter of course - it would have to be something exceptional for us to do that (and I'm talking about all ambos here).

I'm reserving judgement until I can find out who rang and what their reason was. There's two sides to every story, eh?

Speak for yourself. I have had a couple of warnings in the past and it woke me up. If it wasn't for a couple of nice coppers giving me warnings (around 10 years ago), I would have been walking for 6 months at the time. Pinged 4 times in a period of 6 weeks. I was bloody paranoid!

i said it slows them down, didn't say it stops them being killed. i'm getting sick of people complaining when discretion is used, and still complaining when it isn't. i look after myself - i don't give a shit about the propaganda. i've had to take my medicine in the recent past, but you haven't seen me bleating and crying like a spoilt brat on here, have you?

IMO - Thumbs up to the cop, sounds like he was a good guy about it all. As for the ambo driver, I cant see him taking time out from "heading south, lights on" to call in someone going in the opposite direction (I'm assuming seperated from him by a barrier?) at a "fairly brisk pace" unless that pace was more brisk than fairly.

If he was just sticking his nose in when Dover was just going at a, shall we say, slightly-over-the-limit-but-still-just-cruising speed, then the ambo dude needs to pull his head in. However, if Dover was doing speeds more along the lines of "OMG the world is gonna end if I miss Sports Cafe" while carrying a pillion that was wearing obviously substandard protective gear, then good on the guy - and Dover, take the coppers warning and consider yourself lucky. I would.

Probably gonna get slated for this but the majority of people just can't seem to drive.

Either young boy racers tearing up and down in cars with no bumpers, or old people who don't know how to drive... 4x4s that just can't see where they or anyone else is going... bus drivers that pull out and don't care if they hit anyone... taxi drivers that don't know where they're going and make random movements all over the place.

Fact of the matter is that if you're one of the above then you probably think your driving is great.. it's all subjective.

The way I look at it is that as soon as you get in a car, bus, bike, taxi, truck etc.. you are taking your life in your hands and the worst may happen.

In the immortal words of Frank Drebbin... 'You take a chance getting
up in the morning, crossing the street or sticking your face in a fan!'

I wont add much more here because there have been some great opinions aired, thanks guys.

But I'd like to clarify that

a) I never ever ever thought it would be Mr SpeedMedic going the other way.

b) I have absolutely no problem with the cop giving me a warning. He was a top bloke about it, really polite, friendly and acknowledge that I wasn't driving like a cunt, just that it was quick and had been reported.

c) I was not doing earth shattering speeds, lets just say it was around the british dollar. Not real quick on an empty motorway.

d) The ambo's have a tough job to do, a lot of respect for them. Filling speeding quotas aint it. I don't tell the fuckin architects how to design buildings I just do my fuckin job.

y'know, Dover, the REAL reason we all love you so much is... um...

well, me personally, it's because you bring back my old days on uk.rec.motorcycles. every bike forum *needs* at least one thickheaded foulmouthed cunt on a Suzuki.

:niceone:

I'll take that as a compliment.........

But I'm sure there's more than one of those on here!!

well, of course.

but now... oh dear, *now* your foolish pride will exist in an endless struggle with a growing awareness that the world's attention has been drawn to that misplaced apostrophe, and is quietly giggling as you refuse to fix it...

I forgot about 'penis breath'! last time I heard that 'un was... lessee... in 'ET'! the movie! that's right! remember? 1980-something. can't recall which kid it was that said it, though. heh. good times.

no offence dover but im with the ambulance on this one. they are the ones who have to clean you up wen you mess up. and regardless of how confident you are, they dont know that. they only see a biker speeding = accident waiting to happen. obviously you dont intend tocrash but their statistics show drinking and speeding = bad

Wow.... you Aucklanders are pretty quick to get agro on-line... whats with that? Be happy that the speedy one was warned and didn't contribute to the short-fall of police funding.... i'm hoping that when (not if) I get caught I get a similar warning... i shall not question it however, I shall take it with both hands... then see if there is anything that i can buy with the saved funds... :)

Just so you all know - I haven't managed to track down the ambo who called it in - but everyone I've spoken to has all said the same thing -
1. it would be pretty hard to guage the speed of someone who was going in the opposite direction, (especially when driving priority one), unless it was extremely excessive.

2. They would only report someone who was driving in a reckless manner that could endanger themselves, passengers or other people.

Hasn't helped the road toll though, has it. Check the figures for Aucklands toll in particular. Spare us the propaganda.

That reminds me of an old joke Lou .....

An elderly man was standing in a shopping mall with a rifle. He was approached by a police officer who asked him what he was doing.
He replied, "Protecting the shoppers from lions".
"There aren't any lions here", replied the cop.
"That's because I'm here", said the old guy.

Who knows, without the old man maybe there would have been lions in the shopping mall, and who knows what the road toll would be without the ticketing.

That, in a nutshell, is why driving standards are so bad. The incompetents aren't killing themselves as they used to. Safer cars are enabling the dorks to survive.
