Inline fours are too smooth and buzzy.

Inline 4 all the way. (I've tried a TL1000's a few times too)
Reasons for the inline 4:
1. Better Power
2. Easier torque curve to control
3. I love a screamer
4. They just seem to put the inline 4's in better and lighter bikes.
Reasons for the twin:
1. Better torque/Power on tap
2. Gruntier sound

Inline 4 firing order like a twin, is it the virgin r1 in BSB that had 1 and 4 fire then 3 and 2 fire at the same time to help get traction to the ground
other than that a twin for the sound as you really dont need that much power on the road anyways

Only owned one bike but would say that I like the sound of a/my twin at idle, but dont like the sound at high speed (as a bystander). Prefer the inline 4 sound at speed.

Have owned lots of inline 4s before, and a couple of v-twins and would have found it hard to pick a favourite (both different and both good) until owning the 636. No doubt GSXR600 and R6 and CBR600RR are the same or very similar. Smooth, turbine like acceleration, wonderful howl as it spins towards its red line, plenty (!!!) of power, engine braking is not too savage (a pet hate). Give me a modern 600 inline 4 any time. But then I wouldn't say no to a 749......

Inline 4 coz they are fast!
havnt riden a factory twin that impressed me, the RSVR was the best of the twins that I have riden, but not as good as the worst of the inlines..

I'm with kerryg here. I've had inline4s, parallel twins, V4s, and square 4s and they're all very different, but I've loved them all.

Go the V's . . . you just cant beat the sound, especially the hollow sound the big V twins make as they come on song under heavy acceleration, sounds like its actually inhaling the road, and you feel your nuts tighten up just to escape being sucked in along with it.
Sure they are slightly down on power over the 4's, but they still go goooood, they sound fantastic, plenty of engine braking (which I like) and they are "relaxed" to ride at legal speeds (for when you just dont feel like attracting disco lights).

i've only ridden a single and a vtwin, so not really qualified to comment, (until i go and pick up the zxr) but i do like the sound the v twins make, it was the first thing i commented on when i bought my current bike, sounds bigger than it actually is, and will still give most cages a run for their money and thats all that matters

I've has singles, twin's,triples, four's and a Six..last inline4 was a Z1000J,sold in 1983,the same year i got my first V-Twin (L-Twin) Ducati so i base my like of them on 22 years worth, the novelty hasn't worn off yet :niceone:..but in saying that, one of my next missions is to do a lap of Australia so am thinking GSX1400...The V-Twin torque thing is a myth, most litre inlines make way more torque than most twins of the same size, they just have a fairly broad and user friendly spread of power and are less busy so the fun factor starts early..maybe that is the attraction...Of course the cylinder angle changes the characteristics.

I haven't ever ridden a V-twin.
But I've ridden an inline twin (zzr250). I'm used to my Zeal (inline 4) and the rapid engine response. The zzr always feels a bit like a tractor, like the engine takes quite a while to get up to speed, but also that the revs don't drop as quickly as the inline 4 when changing gear or slowing down.
Does the zzr just have a big flywheel/heavy crankshaft or are all twins like that?
I'm thinking about an SV650 for my next bike but I'm not sure if I'll like it if the engine responds the same as the zzr's.

you need to ride a 'busa with aftermarket pipes on it.
i love the (yoshi-fitted) v twin for 'canyon' riding in the country, and riding around town and passing people talking on their phones with the window down and riding everywhere in 2nd gear listening to the rumble bouncing off the walls.
but - i love the seeeeamlesssss power of the big 4's - the 'busa, xjr1300, cb1300, gsx1400 etc - stonking torque all the way, and just screaming when they start pulling revs.
a lot has to do with exhaust note really, although i did like the way the torque is really predictable on the big v-twin, thumping out of sharp corners

Inline 4's. Why? Because of the banshee scream as you approach the upper range of the rpm. V twins, while they are sometimes as quick, just sound to lazy for me. They don't get my blood flowing.
stify

kinda like both, my v twin for a nice lazy ride and that oh so nice sound
and the zxr for the noise at full revs, it just sounds fast all the time

Yeah they do, but they aren't going anywhere while doing it. In fact, I don't likethe loud pipes some riders put on these, too much in my opinion. However the sound of a 600 or bigger on full noise, it tears the air apart. Oh yeah.

I will only ride someones 250 if it's an inline 4. Mine is an inline 4.
When bikes get bigger I like either motor. My favourite Vs that I have ridden are the VTR1000. and VFR800 (they are V4)
My favourite model of motorbike is the FZR genesis, which is inline 4.

I've owned a triple, dozen or so inline 4's and two V's both TL's and enjoyed them all for their own characteristics.
BUT I have got to say that the big V twin is more my cuppa these days. Tonnes of grunt from down low so no need to be changing gears all the time and it(TL) has more than a reasonable top end too.
The massive roar from my Yoshi's as I peel up a city street setting of the poxy cars alarms is an awesome posing rush I have to admit too. :dodge:
But have got to say that I haven't tried a Busa or any other the other late model top CC 4's though. Would be an interesting comparasion to make(torque wise, etc). :niceone:
Until then though...

I think it comes down to the bike you own at the time .
I currently perffer L twinns. Have riden inlines and para's.
Like that Ducati high reving v8 sound and the lazy style of riding of only needing a couple of gears using the full rev range. Massive engine braking too , don't require the use of brakes much.
mind you NC30's are the cool sounding bike , V4

Well, I like the plod-ability of the NZ-250's single around town, pull from as low as 3000rpm, the VTR-250's V-twin sound as it approached 14K great and my new "mount" will have that big-bore four-cylinder torque that I have yet to tell you about...
Mind you, if you've ever heard an RZ500 coming onto the power from 6 and going through to 10K...now THAT is a sound and a half.....

v twins are for posers
inline 4's are for wankers
i love singles, parrallel twins and inline triples. With the latter being the best.
To be honest i love singles.....but they dont make a 1L+ single.

In an Ideal world - You'd have both! (My Long Term Goal!)
The V-Twin for enjoyable rumbling, and good strong engine breaking.
The Inline 4 for track days where you may be needing real speed.

Off topic, but when it comes to inlines, most pail compared to a CBX with a 6 into 1 doing 11000rpm.

V twins are a hoot for having a 'play' on. Those sounds, the engine making almost honest noises, working hard to propel the machine forward, producing blistering acceleration. But (snob hat on), they sound so bloody crude, like an engine from a bygone era. An inline 4 on the other hand, in the right machine, offers smooth, progressive power combined with equally impressive acceleration to a V twin. And, with a higher top end, it will happily propel biker and machine along for hours at silly speeds without the fear of getting off said machine leaving the rider with the shakes like my gran after a heavy night on gin.
Inline 4's buzzy Mr Viffer? - You really should have bought a Blackbird.:eyepoke:

I haven't owned a V yet, so I can't say really.
I've ridden a TL 1000s, and enjoyed it immensly, but used to love screaming down the southern motorway on the FZR.

i like both but as they have differant trills i find i can thrash a v twin easier which is nice to be riding at a bikes almost full potentual, and i lkie inlines for the top end exhilaration. but as far as road riding goes i dont think it matters, but in saying that im having a great time on superduke not sure weather its motor or the bike bring on a v5 superduke with 140+hp that would be the altimate i think :headbang:

Had singles, both two stroke and four. Had three IL4s: 2 Honda one BMW.
I want my bike to start every morning and that rules out most v twins right there. Aprillia and Honda make reliable v twins but most are more "sports" oriented than I want currently.
The new Triumph triples are certainly nice.
The V5s due next year should be interesting.
Ideally I'd like one of each...
