View Full Version : Reactions On The Road?

Zed

I much favour sportsbikes over cruisers and other bikes. It's always a highlight for me to see other riders on the road going in the same direction, especially when they are on a similar bike to mine! :niceone:

Scenario: You see a helmet up ahead in the distance gliding between the traffic, or in the mirror there is the glimmer of a motorcycle headlight approaching you...how do you react?

Personally I find it quite exciting! I wait to see their reaction & take it from there...it's good when you meet up with other bikes and continue to ride together for a spell- some get quite competitive, some get down right reckless, while others are content to just cruise alongside enjoying the scenery!

I met up with an beautiful black Aprilla RSV1000 recently on the way home from work, we were both lane splitting different lanes of the N'Western M'way in unisen, but when we got in front of the traffic we both plowed it out and he pulled up the front wheel at 100kms just in front of me...that was nice to see. :2thumbsup

Another time recently I met up with an absolute nutcase on a GSXR1000 who passed me going down a winding narrow hill with cars in front of me on a blind curve...I had to catch him, and when I did he just kept doing stoppies & pulling wheelies the whole time we rode together. I was impressed with his skills, but not with his lack of regard for safety in a residential area.

There seem to be a few nutters out west on GSXR1000's. The one who passed us on the NW in a standup wheelie, weaving in and out of the traffic, wearing sneakers, baggy trou and a bomber jacket and one doing a standup wheelie right up the north side of the Harbour bridge, heading south!
Admire their bike skill, not their road sense! :moon:

Coming back from the west pac this sunday I caught up with a bike on the Glenbrook Rd,Don,t know what it was but he was doing around 80-90Kms an I was flying. As I came up behind him I could see he hadn't spotted me, I went past him pretty close coming out of an S bend just out of Waiuku.
I pulled into the first gas station as I got into town and as I took my helmet off he went past an gave me the finger. I just give him a big smile an a wave,,,,,Ahhhh well I was having fun and he got a free lesson about watching his mirrors

I think its exciting. If I see a bike, I have to know how fast he/she is so I follow them for a while. If they are too slow then I just overtake them straight away and go on my own way. If they are way too fast then I guess they would do the same. When I come across someone going on a similar pace to mine then thats really good cause you can have a little fun with each other.

Just following the other biker is a good one, but as everyone is saying, if they are too slow Bye Bye cya l8r u can eat my 2 smoke lol:P. if a bike is coming in the opposite direction, no matter wat they are riding or doin ill give them a wave or a nod, although alot of old guys tht have just bout a huge crusier and its there first time back on a bike need to learn to wave bac:@

Theres is riding fast (like scraping the pegs etc), but then there is riding stupid like passing on blind corners, surely u can wait for the short straight it aint like a bike is slow with acceleration.

Nice Jackrat LOL, ppl need to learn not to get so angus wen they are passed lol

Yeah it's a totally different riding experience when you're with 1 or more other bikes on the road...watching and admiring one anothers machines makes the ride that much more thrilling and entertaining, especially when there are some skills displayed!! :msn-wink:

usually it is others passing me on their sports bike, I tend to ride at just legal approx speeds. But when I see a helmet up ahead I try to catch up, though usually they are conservative riders and I get frustrated riding at a speed out of my own pace so I say :bye:

It's usually excitement, I don't get to ride with people much since my mate binned his FXR and went to Germany. So the thought of riding with someone is excellent, however most of the riders around here in Whangarei ride old Harleys that I'm surprised actually get warrants.

I've had about 10 satan slaves go passed me,one guy give me the bird, the last guy the thumbs up.I think they have a club house in Param. That wound have been the most intrested i have been.other than that its a wave from me. a classic old bike dose spark my intrest a bit.

I try and wave at everybike that i past, pastes me or goes other way, no matter what they are are on, some of guys on harleys just ignore you, but other wave back, and thats coming from me on sports, bikes.

We are all motorcycles we are all using the road, all need to just say howdy to everyone, you see the truck drivers doing it to each other, even tho some are in mac trucks other are international, its not the brand, its that you are riding that all matters.

Hope to see ya on the road, i be the bright yellow bike with yellow leathers waving at you.

On a resent ride I was passed by a Buel on Hyw 22,He was going real hard and put me right in my place because up til then I thought I was doing pretty good :weep:
Then later in the day I saw a bike in the distance just past Arapuni,I caught him on the old Taupo Rd and was delighted to find it was a new Kawasaki 650 twin.As soon as he spotted me coming he picked up the pace and we had a good dice going through the Wolveston forest.at the end of one of the few straights I got past him on brakes and after that he couldn't get back around me even though he had a good try just outside Tokoroa. It's not often I come across somebody on a similar bike to mine so it really made my day to have a ride like that on one of my most favorite roads.
It just doen't get better than that :niceone:

I try and wave or nod to most people, but I think my bike puts me at a disadvantage in terms of them waving back. I'll try to catch up to people if I see a helmet ahead, but i havent been out on many long rides on the beemer yet, so no good fun to be had yet... I'm sure I'll find some, the best so far is catching the holden club going up SH16 :P

I love to see other bikers out there, I am generally interested in where they are from and heading to, there's a general camaraderie that is unique regardless of age, gender or creed, just wonderful!

I always try to give other bikers a friendly nod. And mostly they do the same. Yes it's nice to see the camaraderie.

But guys please use your common sense. If you see that a biker is a L-Plate rider (like me). Take it easy and give him as much room as you can. Only play with people not wearing L-Plates.

Coming back from Auck on Sun was shitty, all HD's and none of them wankers waved.

I really did appreciate the bloody awesome rider on the Goldwing stretching that arm right out to wave as if to grab my arm. Mint guesture. The other half sure as hell enjoyed that (felt the squeeze of them nutcracker thighs as she got excited :niceone: )

I love motorcycling. Love having the companion on the back.

Always interested to see what others are riding, and acknowledging others through waving or nodding. Don't usually try and keep up as I'm a pretty conservative rider.

Back around christmas time I was riding out to Tauranga to spend christmas with my family and i stoped to let my sister and her bf catch up. while i was stopped another biker pulled up and i started talking to him. turns out he was waiting for another biker and was goin in the same direction as me. If the guys friend had showed up a few seconds earlier i probably would have riddeen the rest of the way with them just for the enjoyment of riding with other bikers. (I've haven't done a group ride yet:o ) but my my sister rolled by so i rode off to pass her again and as i looked back i saw the guys friend show up. I would have much preferd to ride with them.

I guess it's only natural being in to bikes to like seeing another bike and feeling a sense of comradery (spelling?). Coming home from work one day I followed a magnificently restored Kwaka waterbottle (550) to near my place and just enjoyed looking at it. The finish and paintwork were just awesome.
Another time I followed a pair of Kwaka ZXR750's. I couldn't keep up for long, but enjoyed seeing their awesome power when they both shot off together.

Hell, I get excited when I see bikes whether I'm on the bike, in the car or walking down the street! I have been known to walk into things while drooling at bikes going past - particularly sports bikes.

I always wave when I see bikes, whether I'm riding or pillioning, and I love getting a wave back. When I see a bike up ahead, I'll see if I can catch and pass it, but I don't do this just for the sake of it - if they are going slower than me, then I will definitely leave them behind but I'm more interested in seeing what they are riding!

I try and wave as I go past too, and if I see a bike coming up fast behind me, I always try and move over to give them space to pass. Be nice if they acknowledged this, but few do!

I wave if I go past a rider who is stopped somewhere too (and we stop if they are in the middle of nowhere and look like they need a hand) and I love that feeling of being "one of them bikers"!

Hey Boris, I've been passed by those guys too! I used to live in Otaki and was heading home from Wellington one night when they passed me. They then slowed to about 90 so at the passing lane just south of Otaki I pulled out and passed them. Oh shit, wrong move, they then passed me REALLY close, one by one, and I thought I was a goner! Luckily that was the end of it, but my better half soon pointed out that taking on gang members while riding an RG150 was probably NOT a good idea!

I wave or nod at alomst every biker I pass, and If another biker catches me, or I see one up ahead, i try to stick with them...but it is hard if they are riding a thou and me on my little 250cc! I really have to work it to even stay close...so i eventually give up.

Guys on tourers or cruisers need to chill out and get some road manners...they never do anything back...even the fingers would be better than nothing!

I wave to everything on less than 4 wheels. Scooters through to Harleys . Provided I see them in time and I'm not right in the middle of a corner or something. Then it's maybe a nod

Oddly Li'l Ratty usually gets a wave or a nod back from cruisers, even Harleys. No idea why, they must just be taken with his sheer cheekiness. Had another one this morning, from some dude with a patch.

Cruisers steadfastly ignore the Whale of course. Oddly, so do most other BMW riders. Maybe I need to wave in german.

Its cool seeing other bikes out there and I try to wave whenever I can. A few months ago on my first long ride in 20 odd years I was caught by a couple of sports bikes ( can't remember what they were ) just south of Taihape. Stopped at Cafe exchange for a coffee and they stopped too. Had a bit of a chat and one of the other riders said " That bike gets along alright " . How to make an old bastard grin like a kid

Always wave or nod or both, even as pillion. You're right about the Harleys and Triumphs...whats up their arse? Mind you, got two to wave back the other day...first ones so good on ya, a sign of changing times???? Friend has a Boulevard and the HDs and Trumpies aren't sure what she is so they usually/always wave out.... Will still wave at them though, see how many responses ya get.... Wife rode in to work the other day with two mates on their bikes, staggered formation sort on thing... just a 16km cruise in to town, loooked back in her mirror to see they were joined on by a fourth who cruised on in with them...nice...

No matter what sort of bike or rider/group etc, the excitement has always been the same.

I wouldn't downgrade the feeling from excitement to "interest" even after more than 50yrs of riding.

I told my wife recently that bikers didn't seem as friendly as they used to be.

She later told me that she had observed me speaking to other riders and then ignoring them even walking away as they returned the greetings etc.

Old age brings on deafness and I wasn't hearing them talking to me and I thought "they" were ignoring "me". Who! indeed was not being friendly?

So if I have ignored or not spoken when you have spoken to me I probably didn't hear you. :spudwhat:

Accept my apologies in arrears or in advance, whichever the case may be. :wait: Cheers John

I came across a bunch of beautiful dukes one day, but they were all doing 90km, big open straight roads... was lovely to cruise past them and get a good look at all their bikes, but really??? Wanted to have some fun with bikes of the same breed but sadly I carried on my way, none acknowledged me as I cruised sensibly past and I was left dissappointed as I saw them fade in my mirrors. Never mind, they were in their own buzz I guess and probably enjoying themselves so good for them but Hey, no need to be snobby about it. Always in search for fun but happy to do my own thang.

For an answer for the poll it depends on the bike really.

Couple of weeks ago I was on the Pakuranga Highway, slowing for a light, almost stopped and the light went green. Cars in front but pulled away slowly. I hear this tremendous rumbling behind me... Look in both mirrors heaps trying to figure out what the hell is making that much rumbling...

Eventually bike appears in mirror. Move a little to the left to allow him to overtake if he wishes. He does. Red with yellow decals TLR1000....

Just about creamed myself listening to the thing. Caught up at another light and we even had a little conversation about his nice bike, bet he spends more on tyres than petrol, yep he does etc... very nice, all while waiting for the light.

He shoots off in the traffic, and I go at my pace, yet couldn't stop thinking about the sound for the rest of the day. Love the friendliness with strangers.

Oh for a full license and one of those or similar  :sweatdrop

You got that bike on a trailer, what do you need a whole lane for. Making you jump out of your skin for not paying attention is half the fun.

Ducati riders have changed since my day. (when is was yor age sonny blah blah blah). They used to be the friendliest bunch on the road. But if they only ride a duke at 90K wellll what can you expect. Probably in agony riding at that speed lol.

Its always good to have someone catch you up... or catch someone else.

Last month caught a nice twin cruiser (Didn't catch the make).. heading towards inglewood.. Once he saw me, we started playing follow the leader.. followed him for about 10k's then he let me pass and followed me quite closely while we were doing some interesting speeds... into inglewood I gave out a wave and he returned it.. and we split paths...

I always get very excited when see'ing other bikes on the road.. its great fun =)
