how much is petrol in NZ

hi guys, doing a bit of budgeting and working out a few things ready for moving over and just wanted to know a figure for petrol per litre or gallon please. over here it is almost £1.00 per litre approx $2.70 per litre roughly.

The cost of living is something you can only calculate when you are living in a country and earning the local coin. You'll drive yourself nuts trying to convert all the time.

It is currently $1.44/litre for gas, but unlike the UK it is pretty hard to get by without some sort of vehicle because the public transport is terrible by UK standards, so I spend more of my income on gas in NZ than I did in the UK.

Mate... I've been over here for a couple of months, the first thing you learn is that the calculations you did at home were pointless.

Petrol is cheap, cars are expensive, coca cola is cheap, pepsi is expensive, kiwifruit is cheap, tomatoes are expensive.

It's shit like this that you don't realise until you get here.

If you can adjust to the kiwi diet then you'll save a little, but if you're a specialist eater then it may work out for expensive for you.

PS. Where are you looking at moving to over here?

Hardest habit to get out of would be the constant price comparison when you are here. Always found myself going "Damn those are expensive, we would get X for X back home". But there are many things that are cheaper too. (Weasel were you joking when you said cars were expensive here?)

Also is it just me or does food seem more expensive in a place like gisbourne(sp?) compared to Auckland? (Only been that way twice but food seemed to cost a lot more there than here..)

I agree with Jim2, our public transport system sucks. (Although if you compare to South Africa, at least we can say we have a public transport system.)

Well we went out today and brought a 1998 VW Golf CTi 1.8, 90ks on the clock, alloys etc...

$16,000.

Guess that equates to about £6500... which isn't too bad if you look at it like that, but in relation to how much disposable income you have here as opposed to the uk everything is just a tad more expensive.

I'm not too worried about the money to be honest, I make enough to get by, but it's the scenery and the people that made me come here.

In South Africa i think the cars work out a lot more expensive than they do here... (Large difference if i recall right.. about $10k+). But oh well... (Would have gone for a VR6 golf myself :love: ... but im biased i think...)

Yes, both cars and bikes are expensive in NZ... We are a small market and stuff has to be shipped quite a long way.... Imagine getting a brand new car (say Daewoo Matiz) for under $5000....... That is what it is like in the UK.

Think of it roughly as pound for dollar, and it evens out. I think that apart from housing (expensive in the UK) - your living costs relative to earning power are pretty similar.

NZ seems to be cheaper for hi-po Jap cars though, especially when second hand...at least from what I read in the Pommy mags.

USA gallon is smaller than UK one - it's about 4 litres more or less, over here we have paid $2:47 US a gallon at cheapest and $3:14 US a gallon at the dearest (in California).
In converting it I suppose we are pretty much paying $5:80 or so (NZ) for a US gallon in NZ.
