View Full Version : Auckland: Puke open-day, 11th of November

Ok peeps, I know it's early, but who's gonna go to this?
Auckland Uni students, you'd better have a real good excuse for not showing up! Almost everyone should have exams over by this time, and if you've got a Saturday exam, it's a great way to de-stress :niceone:
Mid-week open days are the bomb...hardly anyone there usually, and you normally get heaps of sessions. I think the last one I went to I got in about 300kms or so of laps, 'cos they only had car session the bike session and the occasional drifter inbred session (nah, some of them are good guys, just not in general).

Why is that?
"It is calculated that New Zealand lost nearly one third of its entire male population to World War 1, taking the country over two generations to recover, and seriously impacting on the economy of the country for the next 30 years. During the Great War, New Zealand raised 110,368 troops for active service overseas, of which number 100,444 actually proceeded overseas for service. The number of New Zealand men killed, directly and indirectly in the Great War was over 17,500.
It is estimated that over 10 million men lost their lives in World War 1. Less than 30 (26% actually) per cent of French soldiers escaped the war without injury, Britain 58 per cent, the Serbs lost 35 per cent of their men, and Turkey 30 per cent. The figures are very difficult to grasp - two million German dead, 1.3 million French dead, 1 million British Commonwealth and Empire dead." http://www.uktravelbureau.com/battlefields/battlefields2.cfm
11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 is the day WWI ended. That's when we choose to remember the people who died.
The irony of the fight between Germany and Great Britain is that their ruling houses were comprised of cousins, uncles, aunts, nieces, and nephews. They were also fighting over utterly esoteric values and on territory belonging to both country's "natural" enemy, France. You'll note from the following source that the only country who suffered more casualties per head of combatant than NZ was France. See the following table.
Casualties of the First World War

Statistics cited from The Longman Companion to the First World War (Colin Nicholson, Longman 2001, pg. 248); they have been rounded to the nearest thousand. All percentages are my own; they refer to the % of the total mobilized.
1. The figure of 55,000 refers to soldiers who saw combat; the number of Africans involved as auxiliaries or otherwise is likely to include several hundred thousand. Troops were drawn from Nigeria, Gambia, Rhodesia/Zimbabwe, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Nyasaland/Malawi, Kenya and the Gold Coast. Figures for South Africa are given separately.
2. The British West Indies regiment drew men from across the Caribbean, including Barbados, Bahamas, Honduras, Grenada, Guyana, Leeward Islands, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and Trinidad and Tobago; the bulk came from Jamaica.

Sorry about the prevous post, but you asked Toast :) I know it's in the wrong place too but <shrug> we get bent out of shape about 1 death in our community every year or so, and 6 or so injury accidents. Imagine if a third of us died and two thirds of the rest of those left suffered a serious injury in the space of just 4 years.

You just pay at the little office on the inside of the track, sign your life away, get given a little sticker which you just stick in your pocket, and you're set.
They're pretty relaxed, and have no track briefings, but you'll be pretty sweet dude. Just gotta worry about your own lines (try to keep them smooth ofcourse), the guy behind you has the responsibility to pass safely...same goes for you if you want to make a pass.
Really not much to worry about though aye.
If you wanna cruise there together, we can meet in the city (I live in CBD) once you've crossed the bridge.

Well, barring running out of gas in the 3rd session and nearly killing myself in the 4th, couldn't have been a better day really.
I'd like to take this opportunity to express just how careful one has to be with their line coming on to the front straight...wide ain't cool...and I thank God that the grass was bone dry else I may be bikeless...not to mention motionless somewhere...
Apart from that though, choice day. I got my braking a bit more sorted coming in to the hairpin, though I'm still pulling them on a bit too early, and my entry to the back straight could be improved. After that one major scare though, I sorted out the entry to the front straight pretty smartly :D
Good to meet you guys too, Jill, Frosty, and the rest whose names have slipped my mind for the moment...
Cheers,
Phil.

What a great day.
First time out on the track with the SV. I was a bit tentative the first session, just getting a feel for the bike. Still about 4 seconds quicker than last time I was out on the 250 so I was pretty pleased with that.
Second session the advice went along the lines of 'time to be a bit more aggressive'. Ok, I can do that...
Well, those chicken strips are pretty much gone, dropped seven seconds off my first session times and clocked in at around 1.19. Woohoo! I was stoked!
Still heaps of places to improve on, got to get the braking right into the hairpin and a few other places but I had a ball! The bike did all the things it was supposed to so I'm really pleased with that.
Great to meet you Phil and yeah, some of those guys go pretty quick, including you! Best not to flinch when they go past...
Fun watching Frosty and Motobob duelling it out.
And guess what, Dveus got a whole session in without his bike dying...!

Bugga, sounds like i missed a gooden. Was looking forward to losing my virginity too.
Got a stone stuck in my rear brake pads. Stopped to try to remove it, no luck. Got out to Puke just in time to watch the last minutes of the first session. I've had a bad week, Murphy's law is sitting firmly on my left shoulder at the moment! :spudbn:
Decided not to bother, had to be gone by 1.30 anyways, so didn't think $90 for a session or two worth it. Will have to get better organised next time.
Off with the rear brake unit tomorrow.....F*#&n Stones!

I dug a peg in the hairpin, then practised my flying, somehow I went over the front of the bike feet first. have been down and had x-rays done on my ankle and they dont believe it to be broken, just a decent sprain.
I haven't really had a good chance to check out the bike yet. It didn't appear to be to bad when I was loading it into the van.
