it seems that the powers that be think 50K is too fast for the city center.
Speed limits in Dunedin’s central city streets will be lowered to 30km/h as from 1 November 2005.
Motorists on George and Princes Streets between Dowling and Frederick Streets; and sections of the side roads abutting George and Princes Streets, will be guided by 30/50 signs erected around the periphery of the zone.
Consultation on the speed limit change was undertaken in July and August 2004 and in September 2005, Council approved an amendment to the 2004 Speed Limit bylaw, Funding of $21,000 was subsequently provided in the 2005/2006 Annual Plan.
Drivers are urged to take care not to exceed 30 km/h during off peak hours when traffic levels are low.

They suggested it in 2003 but didn't do anything. Didn't know they suggested it last year.
When was the last time you caught yourself doing over 30k's in George street at peak hours? Probably go back a few years for me anyway. So it doesn't really need to be a law. Because you are forced to anyway.

Isn't it wonderful that the govt (both local and central) think that its citizens are so dumb that common sense needs to be legislated. F***ing hilarious to see how much my ability to think is valued by govt. Although, the scary thing is, the govt is probably right!!
Been a while since I've been to Dunedin, but if the central city is anything like around here you'd need to be a REALLY dumb f*** to get near the speed limit in the CBD.

When this issue came up last year, it was in response to the problem of drunken pedestrians on the street in the wee small hours. The police suggested then that the way to stop these people from being harmed when lurching along the main street is to lower the speed limit to 30kmh :weird:
Fair enough I suppose - these people have to step on to the road to get a good swing with the rubbish bin before they throw it through the shop window - can't have them getting hurt now can we?

haha all the boy racers will be funny dragging off at the lights, they probably won't get out of first gear, ffs i can probably run (for a short time) at 30km/h which sounds like a fun new drunken activity!

The annoying thing is the boys with their "lawn-mower cars" (that's what they call them here) will still make the same annoying noise as they take off from the lights - those Jap cars must have the same first two gear ratios as a Kenworth 16 speed....

It happened in Blenheim. They changed the limit for some unknown reason. and then they tried to put camera's up to enforce it.
I saw it as a good and bad change cause of all the rice bags floating around, but then again, you couldn't get to 50 in Blenheim with all the farking speed bumps.

It's because the rally cars have low diff ratios and it rully makes 'em pull eh! :tugger:
