Ok here's the situation, a workmate of a good friend of mine wants to buy a new bike. He's had limited experience so decided to go with a new, learner model 250. Now the local franchise for this brand hasn't got any in stock currently, however they have some in early November. Now he is a serious buyer, cash in hand wanting to buy right now and wanted to put the cash down now, but the dealer has apparently refused to take his money.
Now I'm in the autosales industry, and when someone comes in offering to leave a 100% deposit on a vehicle that hasn't arrived yet, I kick my salespeople's arses if they refused to take their money. Not only does it take the buyer out of the market, but the interest earned while you hold the money.
Okay, maybe they can not guarantee supply, but all the shop would have to do is put a condition on the sale outlining this with 100% return of deposit. This still leaves them with the interest earnt. So, what gives? Sarge? WT? Anyone else?

I'll stick his money in my savings account... I could do with a few bucks interest over the next few weeks on a few thousand bucks.
Some people just shouldn't be in business... unless there's a reasonable excuse, in which case I shouldn't be in business!!

Depending on the business, having the money can be a hassle, as you need to pay tax ect on that amount, by waiting a month the business may get some sort of benifit, plus its less paper work

mate .. no frikkin idea .. i can ship to C'Ch for a few hundy though...
seriously though.. that salesman shouldnt be in the biz if he isnt hungry enough to go after the sale.. im selling GSXR1000k6's with limited availability.. but when the new shipments come in, the dealers with pre-orders go to the head of the line for distribution

Shit, a sale is a sale, get onto the suppliers asap I say and make sure of an arrival date, move on to the next deal. When I bought the Duke there was no follow up phonecall to ask how things were going with her, and I hate to be sexest but especially for a chick rider, no reccommendation who to go to for serving (yes, the bike guys, geeees), etc. We have a policy at work to follow up with a customer care call exactly one week after a deal is done, and I sell bloody money? How hard is that? Great thing is they never bring it back and say its broken or doesnt work how they expected, only that it was never enough. :slap:

I don't think it would be considered a sale in the accounts, since there is still, or at least it can be claimed that there is still some uncertainty as to whether the business can fulfill its obligation...so I don't think tax is really likely to be an issue here.
Damn curious to know what the real reason is though.

Nah, just put in a repeat order each time he takes delivery. That way there'll always be a new one just arriving by the time the previous one is totalled :devil2:. (Just kidding Mr The_Dover - I'm sure that the next one will lead a happy and uneventful life and finally expire of general old age, unscratched and unbinned)

the thing that most motorcycle shops (and most shops generally) have to learn is that they're in RETAIL, and the bloody customer is always right because he or she is the one paying the bills. I suspect I know from your description the name of the shop, and I am continually amazed by the "I dont give a fuck" and "how dare you interrupt my important business" attitude I get from salesmen.
I will give props to two shops n Christchurch though, one of whom (Sportzone) I have bought a bike from, and one of whom (Eric Woods) I havent and am unlikely to. Unfaililingly helpful, polite and welcoming is such a difference from the usual standard of (non) service.
As for the taking the money side, there is a potential problem: if they take the money, against an undifferentiated bike when it arrives, the buyer becomes an unsecured creditor of the dealership. If it goes tits up, then he joins the unsecured creditors pool, and basically sucks left hind tit, and kisses goodbye to the money.
If however the dealership takes the money in full payment of bike no 12345 blah blah, then title has technically passed and if the dealer goes tits up he can legitemately claim his goods back.
A minimal deposit of say $200 would show his bona fides, and secure the deal, but honestly if they dont give a fuck, why should he? Id be going elsewhere.
