View Full Version : bike security. clamps, concrete bolts, sheds

now that I sold my right arm to buy a bike I suppose Id better treat her better than the last one. I'll need to keep it secured properly and keep it dry at night. I dont have a garage yet and my landlord says they are gonna build their house before they build my garage. there is a small shed there but the way the door is there its quite difficult to get anything in and out, not to mention its full of my welding shit etc)
Of course im on a budget cos I cant ride without my left arm as well, so I need some thoughts on what to do. cheapest option I can think off is to leave it wheel locked with a cover over it. inexpensive but unsecure.
next up comes a cover with one of the clamp things you bolt into the concrete and chain your bike to. a bit more hassle in the morning etc and I would have to make sure no fliatmates park their dumarse cages over it. secure but a hassle.
third thing I can think off is getting a shed, either prefabricated, moved in, or built from scratch. It would have to be 2Mx3M base and about 2.3M high give or take.
If I buy a prefab, im looking around $700+ since I might as well get one big enuf for both bikes and other shit.
If I buy an existing one and move it in, I think Ill probable pay more in moving it than buying it
If I make one myself, I dunno, buy some sheetmetal (seems the cheapest material for this) and make the frame it with some 2x4 stolen from some building site (or bought whatevers easiest)
can anyone give me some feedback on what I should do here. of course ideally I would rather have a shed but thats possibly out of my spending league at the moment.
cheers

It all depends doesn't it. What sort of area u live in, how far from the road, would the bike be viewable from the road who drives on that road etc.
I live in Pt Chev on a secondary road only really used by people living on or off it and bike is viewable from road, has a handgrip lock on it (when i remember to put it on ... probably 90% of th time) and never had any probs for the last year since lived here. Granted it is an older bike and it does sit below my window, i also put a cover over it in winter etc.
So year its your judgement call, of course the ideal is a garage but doesn't seem to be an option yet.

I asked this question a while back as I'd just moved into a garageless house. :crybaby:

If a gargre is not a goer, then:
Park it out of sight as poss.
Park it near to (or in!!) bedroom.
Cover it (Warewhare tarpaulin $3).
Get an alarmed disc lock from eg http://www.lockitt.com/disclock.htm.
Ultimately, there is nothing you can do to stop the most determined. So if they don't know its there and has a reasonable deterrent...

if they really want your bike .. there will be no stopping a determined scumbag
however .. if its a "lets grab a bike" kinda dumbass.. make it harder for him to steal compared to the one next to it and you should be good

yes nice thinking make the lesser bike easier to pinch. i'm lucky i have a garage. don't know what i would do without one. don't like tarps much as the bike can sweat on a hot day.
if you need a hand building a small shed just give me a holla ill bring all the tolls over. knock it up in half a day.

Park it in your lounge
I'd do that but there are steps everywhere. Might sound odd but I have seen a Harley parked inside a house and a Speed Triple chained to the floor of another guy's living room.
The dog idea works too.
Might buy a prefab shed this time though, it won't get me in trouble by chewing the neighbours shoes.

You gotta laugh at the big dog method, but there are some happy dogs after it's all over.My daughter was burgled yesterday, two dogs on the property,it's isolated and who cares about barking dogs, they always bark eh? Same with non monitored alarms, that's relying on neighbours to do your dirty work.

personally, i have kept my bikes in the house everywhere where that has been possible and its been 100% sucessful at preventing theft .....
..... and carpet shampoo is a damn sight cheaper than buying another shed or whatever ....

Prak it inside.
my 3 flatmates are non-bikey and made me promise not to prak my sprotsbike inside ever. they dont even like it on the deck.
thats assuming I could get it in ther. the house is a good foot and a half off the ground without anywhere good to mount a ramp. thanks for the thoughts though guys. and LOL terminal addict for finding that old piccy I made ages ago.

Got a house here with a bikey as a landlord. A room will be vacant from end of Nov. The house is pretty crappy, though....(read: old with tattered paint.....see if I can persuade the real landlord to buy some paint for me)

Your probably going to hate me I have over 500 sheds to choose from. I manage a storage complex. Best security around. Cameras, Floodlights, electric alarmed fence etc. Plus I live onsite. :niceone:
Won't stop someone nicking it when I go to the shops on it though.

crash the bike a bit then it won't look nearly as attractive (like mine - it even has tape on it).
If it looks nasty but still griplocked then hopefully its far less attractive than the one next to it... just try to keep it mechanically good...
Helpful tips: or try to keep it out of site (possibly shed) and lock it best you can. Generally I leave the bike in first, using the kill switch (good way to test it works as well) so it can't roll. Then griplock it as well.
you could also try using a disc lock. Basically, immobilising the bike as much as possible. Make it not worth their while...

Well my bike is down a 30m drive and under a carport so that you wouldn't see it unless you were really looking. Plus we have some real close neighbours (they pack us in close in Kohi) so I know that should someone be snooping around they'd give me a heads up anyhows.
Also got one of those disk locks... bright orange, so really clashes with the lime green of the bike. First thing you see is the bike, second thing you see is the lock. If push came to shove they could probably have the lock off without much hassle, but for 90% of the theives out there it's too much like hard work.

Dont just chain it, chain it *to* something.... anyone can pick up a bike with a disc lock on it.... get a shed if you can, but otherwise, park it round the back of the house/out of sight from the road. Get a decent cover, eg Oxford rainex, and a good chain. Perhaps you can chain it to the corner of the house?

Someone suggested a tarp..
Pyrocam has one, as I brought him one to keep his new girl nice an dry..
Well she did need a raincoat....
Pryrocam - go to the Mega Mitre 10 store out on Lincoln Rd....
They have different size sheds outside... take a look at them as the door openings maybe big enough to get your bike inside.
They are NOT that expensive either. Its just a matter of assembling the shed and dyno-bolt it to the ground.
If you ever move, then you can take the shed with you.

Do you have, as some houses do, a narrow "aisle" - between house and fence, or house and outbuilding or something. In which case a strong locking gate at one or both ends will do the trick.

As has been pointed out earlier, the point is to make it too hard to bother with, one of my mates has an 8 foot chain thru both wheels and usually round a post when out, or thru a floor latch like the one shown before. never has any problems. Repco have some wizz-bang cable locks about 2m long, they also have alarms built in, think they go for about $50 or so.
