Waahoo, back at Kaitoke!

We've lost general motors to a developer (damn housing) so best we make use of this track while we have it.

Have to make sure we get as many people as possible so if there are some hiding in garages you know about, shout them up.

Bugger about losing GM - where to next ?????

I'm in, sounds like a great reason to come back down to the big smoke.

one problem : how much do we need to nylon ? could someone post a photo or something. so I can sort out mine.

Hey Dave...... any of you lot from up there going to be comming down/over for the Port Nelson st race? bloody hope so

Sketchy_Racer
3rd November 2005, 07:24
hey Bert...

as for nylon-you will need to cover any metal surfaces that can come in contact with the surface and put some plastic wine corks in your bar ends.

its pretty easy, just lay your bike on its side and move it around looking for places that come in contact :)

Cheers, Glenn

F5 Dave
3rd November 2005, 08:47
Plastic wine corks don’t really cut it, they come straight out. But a bit of nylon rod turned down with a lathe can be made by any engineer pretty easily. Then just other parts that may touch down in a crash, gear levers etc. The odd skateboard wheel type of thing. Pretty easy when you spend a while thinking about it.

Port st races are an expensive travel for a mixed event on a longer track & I only have a 50 at present. For a full buckets day (or pref 2) on a kart track then I will be keen.

Blenhiem?????????????

Yeah we need to get our bikes Nyloned good so we dont wreck the track, It has a new surface all rounnd as well so you want to keep it in as gooda condit as possi

F5 Dave
3rd November 2005, 16:43
Sorry the kart guys make us jump through hoops to make sure no damage occurs on the track. The PN track is now not in use as they won't let us.

So plastic covered the bikes are. Doesn't take too long & small price to pay for a brilliant track. Just lie the bike over & see what touches. Sticky out axles or pipes you can get a block of nylon or acetal & counter bore it & screw it on, or some use exhaust clamps with nylon on the other side. I have a axle end that threads onto the extra bit of the axle & screws on hard.

Footpegs, counter bore some holes & bolt on the bottom. I have cheap after market ones with holes in the ends & I got some rod turned up to press fit in the end like bar ends. Find some off cut & take a couple of things to the local lathe guy while there's heaps of time.

and the local kart president is proving hard to track down.

I mean is the track still alive or is just sitting doing nothing any more if so a club should buy it or does anyone know werew there any tracks around

its still in use on the last Sunday of the month. though it is getting tough for them to run with all the new housing developments, same as most tracks in the country.
The Palmerston North kart club has never really liked the buckets on the track even 10 years ago our club had to jump through some serious hoops to get out there.

Thanks ivan and f5 dave for your help. I've sorted out the footpegs (did it years ago) the rest shouldn't be to much of the drama, I'll just dig out the welder and sort some lugs and stuff. Dave do you still have that very sexy RG50 ? is it still on the pace these days ? I've been tring to get hold of Ray Wilson and see if he keen on coming down as well.

The RG is a bit like grandpa’s axe, (Here's the version before in pic), but yes I still race it. Haven’t seen Ray for a while but yeah try get hold of him, last time I saw him was Wanganui street races, think he was still carpet laying in PN. Did you buy the RG/TS from him?

If so I built that. Well some of it. Actually the pic doesn't look like it, Ray's had spoked wheels.

Where are the rest of the PN Bucket guys? Maybe they just got sick of Shane & Lusty's bickering?

The RG was finished about the same time as Ray got your old one (arou nd94-95), It used to be bright green ( with fairings ). I stopped racing it in 97 as I was at uni and couldn't find the time.

As for the rest of the old boys I have no idea, I've only just moved back to Palmerston / NZ and slowly catching up with people.

There are reasons why doc's say you shouldn't race it not only for your safety but also for other people on the track, concusions can cause blackouts under high blood pressure / high pulse rate, I know i wouldn't want someone tring to out brake me and then blacking out and crashing into me :psst:
The thing that you have to remember about broken bones i that they don't take very long to heal but if you rebrake them during the binding process they become as britle as sh1t.
ok enough of that.
Ray use to have a RG mounted TF100 (with extra rear mounting on the motor to slot into the swingarm) i think he used cb125 wheels and front forks with a larger front disk.

Ivan

yep it was quick. Mine is much the same in design. good bike a shame about the rider (me).
If you want to convert your RG to a 100 give us a yell I've got a TF casing (trimed to fix the RG mounts), i used it to cut down my motor to fix the frame.

Hey I dont think i want to change my motor but thanks for the offer. I actually have a GT125 with a Aprillia RS50 chassis you wouldnt believe how similar these chassis are from the Honda RS125 chassis only diff is one is higher than the other so they handle well and the good thing is that the Gt has power to slide the back wheel and all out of the corners cool a

Yep I'll be there i think - unless i cant get the protection sorted out,
though well on the way tonight - bar end, pegs and gear lever sorted and finished welding up the swing arm points . so half way there.

does / has anyone added nylon front end ie brake / axle ?? . they don't seem to touch the ground but i think they might have at some stage ! had a few large opps in the past.
also what about brake and cluch levers ? or do we assume that they won't ?
(again large opps have left their marks)

I'm really looking forward to the meeting last time i raced down in wellington I destoryed my old bucket along with my arm and someone else ? maybe Steadman ?? - long time ago.

cheers

Yeah brake & clutch levers ok as long as a ball there. I covered my rear axle as it stuck out with a bit of rod with a thread & shaping inside to rub around the nut. The front one the nut /axle also stuck out & I had a bent bit of metal with some nylon with counter sinks screwed on it.

Now I know who you are. I almost bought that RS off you, yeah?

getting close. - though slow progress with the nylon. and casting new mini levers (just finished a forge - so busy melting anything i can find at the moment, just finished one rear set)

nope no RS, Dave - i think that was Clint, or one of the griffis (sp) boys, but i was around the same time - at most meetings between 94-98 including the all suzuki winter series at manfeild, Ohakea, king of the junction, fun at feilding the list go's on. as long as the bucket racing didn't clash with MX meetings.
I was very young (and most of the time my old man was with me), started buckets when I was 15. I'll have to scan some old photos that might jog your memory.

Cheers for the help.

Frames !!!!
Its not really the spirt of bucket racing is it ??? You don't need a RS frame to go fast !!! - its all about skill !!! though i won't mind some new rims as my stock slicks are to old to even think about riding on them - (chinsins will have to do)

Hey RS frames are good as it still comes down to skill using them they just lighter and easy to through around I need to chuck a slick on the GT bung it up replace the pegs adjust a few things here and there and out I go Twin Cylinder 2 smoking down the straight supposibly it does 140 ks

its a bit of a shame they stopped making small slicks the last one i found was in AUS years ago, but it was truly preloved and didn't last very long.

you haven't seen it up close - my welding is sh!t and so is the pipe, but in saying that - it is made to the engine specs so it go's ok. - and yes it started its life as a RM125 pipe, off my MXer then i cut it to bit and made it suit the specs.

lol i fell off every race when it was wet and some times twice in a race!! it was quite amusing

cant wait its gonna be wicked fun :)

oh and day licenses are there

years ago... in nelson ..
when i first got into buckets, i fell off every corner, straight, starting the bike... getting out of the van .. before i even started the bike....... but i got better and better.... and soon i could go a whole lap without falling off... then a whole race.... i even won a hill climb...that was held over 3 events!!!!

just ask gav.
i used to run people over:banana: then falll off
i once ran a guy over twice... in the same crash!!! :thud:

so just a warning IF i get back into racing ... i mean when i get back into racing..... look out:shake:

Unfortuntly our Blenhiem contact used to get access to the track by jacking it up with the old fellow who looked after the track, But he as since pasted away
and the local kart president is proving hard to track down.

we used to race there a lot...... that was before they extented it... that long ago!
