On friday I picked up my first trail bike, a '98 xr200 from motomart. Also got me some gear, and got a car to tow it with on sunday hehe. Who is there from the wellington region that does a bit of trail riding and is keen to show me some good places to ride? I've heard of a couple of places, but would prefer to go with someone else as I've never been trail riding before... cant wait to get out there and do it :D

the xr200 is a great trailbike. You can ride them full throttle everywhere and they are really hard to fall off of (but not impossible) I had one as a farm bike for a couple of years. Great fun machines.

Xr200s are a shit load of fun, great to learn on,and when you get better you can push them really hard, learn what it's like to ride over your head, safely. In the 80s every kid had an XR200,they were the hoons bike,I had one when I was 40 and it made me feel like a kid.Enduros have been won on them,so they are a capable bike,it's all up to the rider....

Cool, dont forget to put a bit of time into getting it set up, get the bars & levers in the right place, If you're a big boy you might want to look at some stiffer springs once ya gain some confidence.

Cheers

Classic. I bought an 85 Honda XL200R a few years back for $600 and spent around $2000 getting on the road (I was young). Blew the motor and put a 93 XR200 engine in it. Great bike.

If ya get the chance go up to Himatangi (just before Palmy) with it. It handled the dunes better than my KTM 350EXCR (with road tyres :).

Does it have 15 gears like the one in terminator 2?

lol

Na great bike. Just don't valve bounce one like i did and put both valves through the piston......

Me too, although mine still ran.It had a Wiseco cam and I ran it WOT all the time - but a little too much air time over rutted dry clay saw the end of it.

I thought that was a Yamaha MX100?? albeit with four stroke noises just to confuse!.

Have fun with the bike liftback. I used to have an xr200 myself, although it was more than 10 years older than yours!

Turns out its actually a 93 not a 98... im gonna have to hit up the guy that sold it to me. prolly an honest mistake but its still false advertising, and im not that knowledgable to tell the difference as i havnt seen a 98 model...

I guess it doesn't really matter as they were nearly all the same from the late 80s,so long as the condition is what you'd expect, although being told the wrong year might hurt.Had a guy in today with a 2WD Subaru that was sold to him as a 4WD,the seller still insists it's 4x4,I guess it was sold to him as such and he never questioned.

The early 80s models were the best as the suspn was longer travel, and I reckon the motors had more go,maybe the late model ones had restrictors. After the 4 valve balls up they went back to the old 2 valve motor and gradualy turned into a kids learner bike with shorter suspn and not street legal anymore. They were a hoon bike in the 80s.

is that just on himitangi beach?

Himatangi beach and the surrounding pine forest single tracks and gravel roads. You have to cross the creek at the beginning and travel down the beach about 1km and on your right you'll come across trails that lead you over the dunes and onto the access roads. Their are countless tracks through there. Great fun, a trail bikers dream.

Wasn't it a CR80? Definately a 2 stroke!

No it's definately a 4 stroke (XR200 or 100) but with 2 stroke sounds dubbed over it!

That was always my favourite part! Memoooooorriiieeees.....
