An 'Oh sh*t' moment

Well for the first time in my biking career I managed to snap a chain. I must say that it's one of the strangest experiences that I've had on two wheels.

Fortunately I was just pulling out of the driveway where I work and changing into second gear so I wasn't travelling at major speed. I think that the rear suspension must have bottomed out (because there's quite a deep gutter between and the road) just as I caught second gear.

Going from cornering and accelerating reasonably quickly to no drive almost had me highsided. Luckily the autopilot kicked and I kept my balance. :not:

The chains absolutely rooted (actually it looks pretty knackered now it's off the bike), I've got a small gouge id the swing arm, but there doesn't appear to be any damage to the engine casings. My mechanic has picked the poor old bike up this morning and will give me an update later.

The most annoying thing is that I was having a new shock fitted tomorrow and I was going to get the mechanic to check the chain and sprockets. Bugger.

congrats on keep it together.. often the easiest thing to do under unusual circumstances is to forget your head and drop the bike, so well done there. Just goes to show sometimes thinking and doing nothing, lets the autopilot part of the brain do its thing when we need it most

But slap on the wrists for not checking the chain over yourself and keeping it in check. It's basic 101 of biking. Just think if you'd been on the motorway doing 100 and it decided to give? Live n learn mate, that's what it's all about :niceone:

Lucky no major dramas came from it...I read a story about some dude following a 'Busa on an Aussie site...and the chain from the 'Bus flew back at him at 300km/h or something...now that's scary shit!

Was the chain really worn and loose before it broke? You oil it often?

You cheeky beggar. I'm positively anal when it comes to maintenance. Cleaned and oild at least once a week, sometimes more when it rains (the chain). Even checked and adjusted when necesary, and always on the slightly loose side to prevent any countershaft drama.

But you're right aboout the 100 on the motorway. It's the first thing that my son said to me when I phoned him to say that I'd be a bit late home.
