If anyone knows about a spare ZXR250 C engine - can you please get in touch.
THE RANT:
______________________________
NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've blown a 3 " by 5" hole in my bloody piston barrell case thingee...... see the pic......
FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Remember Frosty - I told you the bike doesn't seem proper......
Just had the bike set up..... brand new GPR-70's, heavy duty chain and sprockets.......
Do one ride down Cheenic Dwive:love: ........... manage to stay infront of everyone except YOSHI for a bit then he let me lead for the rest of the way.
Suddenly the bike feels a bit weird.....Asked Wonko to test ride it...... he comes back saying somethings wrong - dunno what.
Any way I had two appointments....... so head off to catch up for an appointment.
The heat guage never worked - was on the list of fixes after I fixed the tempermental tachometer, bike wont rev past 10k......
But I'm almost there...... only another 10 mins till my appointment and fuck it goes BOOM...... not a big noise - but I see shards of silver metal flying everywhere from under the bike - luckily at that point I pulled the clutch in and rolled to a stop......
Pull over and see this - look at pic :crybaby: :argh:
So - now I have no bloody bike......
Was supposed to buy a new car today - the 11am appointment and a new steering wheel...... have to ditch both now.......
FUCK!!!
Juzzer - please find that bloody Red Baron Reciept - I want to see what the fuck they did for $800+ in service..... I'm not very happy.....
:argh: :argh: :argh:

Can someone help me bring the thing back??
It is now in Onehunga - I need to get it to Mt Roksill.
Some very kind soul - used to ride a 1977 Goldwing - stopped and helped me -
Bryan Hill From StanFord Harts :not:
He took the bike and parked it in his warehouse (what a lucky coincindence) - he owns a warehouse just a few mins from where I blew up and gave me a lift home......
Top bloke - a true Kiwi.
THANKS MATE

Oh dear. Bad luck. Sounds like a rod's gone. (Very unlikely to be related to the work you had done). Shit happens I guess.
If you're still stuck tomorrow afternoon, PM me and I'll break out the trailer and collect it for you. Can't do it till then though, so probably someone else will come through before then.

Shit that's really awful to hear man  supposedly a ZXR400 motor will fit straight in (could someone confirm that).
It'll be an awesome story to tell though. Not many people can say they blew a 3"x5" hole in a engine :p Get some proper pics of it

By the way - I managed to source a ZXR250A motor - Mt Eden reckon it's a straight bolt on job - they've done it before. I am having it delivered to Motohaus now - maybe I will be able to get back on two wheels sooner that I thought.

Hhmmm.. mine was dripping oil/liquid but I did overfill the petrol at kopu. Stopped after that 200kms later. Oil is at a normal level (above) and temps are low as... I might change it to be safe.
What im thinking is that petrol overflow caught crap from front chain sprocket and made it oilly like chain oil or something.
Also jsg it could have been your Swivel pin in your tacho or your gyro that came loose?!
Ahh well... bad luck matey! Sorry to hear that.

Give that man some bling all of you.:not: Yoshi :not:
So from 3pm (ish) today thats what we've done.
Exhaust/Headers, radiator, tank, air box, rear fairings (got in the way) and everything else removed. Old motor removed and stacked aside. New motor lying 1 foot away waiting to be slotted in.
Bout another 2 hours non-stop work and the bikes :done: ..... then all it needs is a tune up and we're  again

2. KB'er Rogson (a guy I've never even heard of before) offers to pick-up and transport my bike over to Yoshi's from the warehouse - give the man some rep people - he deserves it. THANKS MATE.
3. I manage to find an engine
4. Yoshi offers to help me fix the bike - FOR FREE
5. By the early evening everything is stripped off and I'm ready to slot in the new engine.
Blown engine to fully sorted in 2 hours......ready for engine swap in 5 hours...

Grats jsg, still riding the zxr with an oil leak and no temp gauge thats just CRAZY did you even know if you had a proper working cooling system, makes ya wonder - sounds more like an oil starvation/delivery, because just because it drips and you top it up it wont fix the problem, its all about that fabled compression...

yeap you would have had a problem, around town she will hover around mid depending on my filtering / how ruff I am with her, on a ride when the speeds are 160+ its normally sitting quarter of the way up, make sure you get that fixed eh, I am ALWAYS watching mine, best way you can tell if anything is wrong, get used to how your engine warms and cools, if its getting alot hotter than normal switch it off and check everything..

From the diagnosis - a rod got out of line. There was quite a bit of oil in the engine. Despite spilling half on the motorway:whistle:

Good that you got the bike fixed so quick... and you are now up and running again.
But are you telling us that you continued to ride the bike knowing it was spilling out oil all over the roads... and that you also rode down Scenic Drive yesterday with Learner riders following you...
Now what if their bikes slipped on the oil on the road...
That to me is being rather foolish and careless to other riders. IMHO
You knew it was leaking oil... I would have kept the bike off the road until you found out why and where it was coming from.

I managed to stay a bit ahead of the pack yesterday, there was no one following me, except Yohi for a bit and he knew about my bike.
The oil was dripping out - at about a drop every 10 seconds. I had tightened the alternator cover and the oil leak had reduced a lot. 99% of the oil was sprayed onto my boot and left swingarm. Almost a microspray was reaching the road. The learners were more at risk collecting one of the cyclists than slipping in any.
Since you as usual are making your classic assumptions I suggest you know what you are talking about first as it is foolish and careless to go making ridiculous assumptions.IMHO.

I was not making assumptions JSG.... I had read the whole thread...
and even Frosty had made a comment about the oil spitting out everywhere.
I was concerned for all the other riders.. as I would hate to see one of them have an accident... over oil spilling out everywhere...
That was why I made the comment...
But I am glad that you have since got your bike up and running again...
and hopefully you will find out why it was leaking out oil everywhere.

New oil, filter, radiator fluid, swap the flywheel/alternator thingameebob, balance carbs, check plugs and replace if necessary, new alternator gasket, make sure all gauges work, start the bike run it and see if it works.

SixPackBack
11th November 2005, 06:31
JSG is strangely quite as to the cause. Leading factors are big oil leak [ a drop every ten seconds ] and lack of temperature gauge....sounds like the piston seized and the con rod kept going.
Conclude: lack of maintenance.

What do you mean - we have talked about the issue at length here...
Yes it is as you say.
However it's not lack of maintenance - spent just under $700 on it the day before....... and if you look at most of my threads I'm always asking about how to fix this and that.....
It was more like pushing my luck - I knew I had the oil leak - was going to pick up an alternator gasket later in the day.
However there was a ride down the Dwive  so I said - oh what the heck - one more ride.... the oil tank was full, the bike hardly leaked unless thoroughly thrashed.... ......... and there was at least a litre of oil left in the engine when we stripped it.... so no idea.
Any other theories????

If you had a plenty of oil left in the bike, a minor oil leak. That does not explain why the rod let go.

11th November 2005, 14:31
If the oil leak happens to be on the pressure side of the system, then having plenty of oil may not help. You can have a tank full of oil, but if the pressurised circuit is leaking, the oil ins't getting where it's needed. Modern engines don't just rely on having the oil generally sloshing round (that's OK for the gearbox) For the motor, the oil is piped to the main bearing and big ends (and other stuff) by the oil pump. Only a little bit of oil at any one time in the pipe. If you have a leak, the oil PRESSURE drops. that means there's not enough pressure to keep the bearing surfaces apart (I'm assuming a white metal big end/main.) So the white metal surfaces start touching, they pick up on each other, that makes it steadily worse (maybe over a period of days, even weeks) , until you get a high spot picking up on a high spot. That generates enough heat to momentarily weld the surfaces together. Big end locked, piston tries to come down, something's gonna give. Usually the conrod.BANG.

If you know someone who can figure it out please tell me.
Without looking at the engine stripping it down and appraising the components, no one will know. Even then if parts have been removed and fiddled with, its more difficult. Im guessing a lack of oil preassure, but that is a guess as I havent looked. I for one have better things to do with my time. The broken conrod is the outcome, not the begining of the problem.

Well the bikes fixed now - just need to get it back home. Waited nearly 1.5 weeks for a bloody flywheel puller to arrive..... grrrr......
The reason the guys(mechanics) think the thing blew up is cos the radiator cap was leaking - so this caused a loss of pressure in the system, which in turn caused the water to boil much faster, they feel this also caused the heat meter to give a wrong reading, meaning the bike was a lot hotter than it was indicating :thud:
Does this make sense to you guys?? Anything like this happened before??
JSG.

Was the radiator water boiling ? (You'd know if it was)

No - nothing like that happened before the bike blew up.
It just ran slightly guttless. In the end it refused to rev over 10,000 rpm.
Then just blew up...

sounds like BS, i drove the ZXR to uni with a half filled cooling system once, heated up real fast, and went up into the red zone at the lights. When i got to uni and took the cap off the water boiled out everywhere and i topped it up with a bottle of PUMP water.
Didnt do any damage, tho when it was really hot it didnt quite have the kick it did when it was 'on temp'

The bloody event has costed me more than a grand - thats not including another 650 spent on regular maintenance stuff......and it's not like I have t money lying around either.....

Even at "Normal" operating temp's she going to spew. Add water using the reservoir only and, if she's real hot do it with the motor running or let the bike cool first for few hours (not mins, unless you like having a cracked head or block).

It just ran slightly gutless. In the end it refused to rev over 10,000 rpm.
Then just blew up...How long was it running "gutless"? As for refusing to rev over 10,000 rpm, I would have pulled off the road straight away. Sure sign the the motor is about to seize:doh:

Hindsight is about as useful as a fart in a tornado.:2thumbsupOnly if you don't learn from it. Hindsight helps you understand what when wrong and what you could do to prevent doing the same thing again. It builds your knoweledge. Fu*ken useful if you ask me. The old pilots used to brake down every crash to find out what when wrong so that they would not make the same mistake as their dead mate. It's the bases of what they called "having the right stuff".
Hope you are learning:hitcher:
