When I got my new bike AA, who I have been with for along time said they was not interested in insuring my bike. However when I advised that I would have to go elsewhere, for everything, they quickly changed their tune. I'd say your getting shafted due to age, only good side to being an older bugger.

When I got my new bike AA, who I have been with for along time said they was not interested in insuring my bike. Tis the reason we stuck with AMI, who were AA insurures at one point, then decided to switch to another outfit. Had AA do an inspection on the missus car before we bought it. The inspection report stated it had EFI -"hello!!- It's got TWIN CARB" stickers plastered all over it!! Only stay with them for roadside emergency and maps now.

And even then they won't pay out if you do make a claim

And even then they won't pay out if you do make a claim
all depends on the circumstances & the situation of the claim

i used to work at AA Insurance. as a rule of thumb they dont do sprotsbikes often. I use national auto club and some other crazy one that I dont know. but its like this. if your at fault. $400, under 25 $400 not on a full $400
or numbers similar.
my excess is about the same texmo

I used to be with AMI but went hunting for competitive quotes and AA came out the best. Went to them with the VFR and they insured it without any hassles - apart from getting date of birth, rego #, & a couple of other minor details completely WRONG on the policy... Other than that, very good to deal with and I hope I never need to make a claim!!!!!!!

AA won't insure you.
Go for protecta insurance - you pay 25% if you crash (your own fault) 0% if it's theirs and 15% if you hit someone else and its your fault.
Should be roughly 850-950 a year depending on how much they quote you, yous is probably going to be more around 950 with a pricier bike than me.
P.s don't say 2001 as it is a 91/92 model or so ;)

I used to be with Protecta and the excess was 25% of the sum insured - meaning for my bike at the time, it was $4500! I hadn't bothered to read the fine print (my fault) so quickly changed to AA where my excess is now $300 and my premium cheaper than Protecta. AMI wouldn't insure me unless I had other insurance with them, and State wanted $1200!
And I'm an over-40 female... never had a claim, only one speeding ticket and with a full licence for years.

MONTHLY HA!
I pay my insurance in one big woooper. this is why im so poor until payday. $350 on the CBR and $320 on the RGV (different companies)
ins companies ussually add on 10% if you pay monthly.
and heres a little known fact:
FUN FACT TIME! if your 1 month into a year insurance contract and you write off your bike. the rest of the year gets deducted from the settlement (or you pay it)

Who's that with? (edit:) Protecta?
They insured my 250...excess was 25% of insured amount I think (for a single vehicle crash, i.e. I bin it, my fault). Had it insured for $5000...sometimes I wished some bastard would nick it or hit me through an intersection :p

Does anyone know if they (National Auto Club) discriminate against previously disqualified drivers? Even ones with no claims for 5yrs? Cheers.

edit: sorry mate I havent had that problem but I think you should be fine
yoyu are only legally oblidged to talk about speeding tickets etc when they ask you. because insurance works on a year by year basis (its a contract) you MUST mention ur traffic offences when they ask or they can legally decline your claim, even if the other party is at fault.
but its also a good point to know, insurance these days, they basically are a casino, they set rules based on the risks. remember the house always wins
they take your money and earn fuckloads of money by investing it. basically as a claims handler (what I used to do) is to make sure the claim cant be covered then make sure we dont pay for anything we dont have too.

I haveto pay 2.5k if its stolen/fire/crashed and my fault, if not 2k.
This is what happens children. Oh and protecta are a bunch of USELESS a-holes.
"I would like to file a claim, wherin I am not the cause"
"ahh (confused blonde tone) yea sure"
"so what is my excess going to be in this case *explained*"
"ahhhhh, 2.5k"
"but its not my fault"
"2.5k"
"I will send you the claim forms"
She actually didnt understand a fucken thing, If I wasnt such a stable person I would have nutted at the dumb uneducated bitch, fuck I hate them, I am never getting full cover insurance again, 3rd party is all I will ever get from here on in.

...discriminate against previously disqualified drivers? You (or whoever you have in mind? ) will probably always be discriminated for that, once you blemish your driving record it will never be totally clean again and will always go against you. I guess it's procedure with some insurance companies to overlook any disqualifications after a certain period of time, but I've heard that some of them just don't want to know you! ;)
Best advice I can give to any of you who want to get the best deals & prices for insurance, and that goes for buying & selling bikes too - learn how to negotiate! Don't be afraid to ASK for the best pricing, in the case of insurance do some research on the current policy values and get several quotes, put the quotes up against eachother and use the best price as leverage to negotiate what you want!!!

Yeah...I'm guessing I'd be lucky to find a company who won't discriminate for a temporary loss of licence, because like Pyro says, they look for any excuse to raise premiums or not pay out...
which I think is stupid, 'cos my tarnished driving record does not cost them a cent (has cost me an Ohlins rear shock though...@#%^...I'd love one of them), and my 5 years no claims should be enough to prove that I'm a relatively low risk client...all it shows is that I didn't check my mirrors twice in 2 years...*sigh*
I didn't know insurance co's were up for negotiating though (edit: thought that they just had their risks and ratios worked and charged you from their little sheets)...cheers Zed, will try it on with all my charm next time :niceone:

youd be fucking lucky if you got a big insurance company to lower their pricing. the top 3 personal lines insurers (AMI IAG AA) wouldnt touch it. basically its kinda like your tier one helpdesk at xtra. you call up, they tap tappity into a computer and it comes back with some answers with the operator often not knowing what their doing.
sales and new claims departments can be run by school kids.

When I was a fresh faced 18 year old I rode an MZ ETZ125 (sort of like riding a tank but slower). It cost me 400 UKP but insurance is compulsory in England. Because I was young, dumb, riding on a learner's licence and living in a high risk area (Manchester) the insurance cost me about the same as the bike had - just for 3rd party. About a month after I paid the premium the bike was stolen (you can start an MZ with a screwdriver - I don't think they'd invented the key in East Germany then) and joyridden into the ground. After the excess the insurance company gave me about 150 UKP back, so they made a direct profit when my bike was stolen. Fuckers.
I always wondered if they were the ones who stole it. Let's face it, they've got your name, address, bike details, they know what your job is (so when you'll be home asleep) and they're a bunch of immoral wankers. Hmmm...
