any one see top gear tonight? they were saying that in the UK motorcylcles are going to have their exhaust noise limited to 70 odd decibels ,,, and any one caught with a noisey exhaust can have it confiscated!
we dont know how lucky we are ! hope it never happens here!

It will happen here.

If whinging residents can have Western springs raceway limited to a certain level, then some beauracrat will decide that exhausts need to be tamed.

I remember reading a bike mag years ago, about noise tests on bikes in the UK, and the method was to put a unidirectional microphone on a racetrack/quater mile track, get the bike off the mark, the hook 2nd, and wind it full open past the mike. They could not get noise tests dont on the V-Max or FJ1100, because both of them would just light the back wheel, creating a hell of a racket.

Bad thinking there fellas

70dB is about the same sound level as a lightly snoring baby.

well there is an international standard for noise measurement so I hope they would use that instead of making up their own mickey mouse one.....yeah right

Trouble is in NZ it will work the other way - noisy cars will bring out controls that will effect bikes.

Something I've never understood is how boy racers are penalised for loud exhausts, pink stickered etc, and yet HD riders seem to be immune even though a lot of them are 10x louder?

Don't get me wrong, I don't have a problem with the police dealing with excessively noisy vehicles (although we may dissagree on what constitutes "excessive"...) but surely one rule for all?

I only say this because I used to live just off a fairly main road, and whilst the loudest vehicles on the road would have to be ported rotaries (HATE HATE HATE!) the ones that would wake me up at night would usually be gangs of HDs going by with straight pipes on.

And I've NEVER seen one pulled over. Is it because the police are scared of the gangs? (probly fair enough if they are... I would be...)

Clarkson is a bit of a bike-o-phobic all right! And so much for his integrity by agreeing to the manufacturer that he would not reveal any information.....
There is abit more about the bike noise topic on the topgear website I believe. I googled "Jeremy Clarkson" and found some of his weekly articles and it was amongst them. Will try to re-find and post link!

He has vaild point, he was talking about shitty sports bikes ;) the sound of a sports bike only appeals to sport bike riders, IMOPO they sound shit. Cruisers and big cars sound good. Think of it like big bore's and BOV's they sound utter tripe to most people except the dickwad who drives it at 8000rpm in the mall parking lot. But when you hear a lambo drive past with a mean low grumble (and the looks to go with it btw) its nice. Same with cruisers Looks+ sounds = good. Sports bikes arnt built for looks or for sounds so I win.

I do like sports bikes, and I agree with myself, they sound shit. I did own one, for a little while :)

Yeah those 916's sound and look sooo 'GHEY'. Not.

I LOVE exotic sports car sounds, I also love the high pitched 'spooling up' sound of an IL4 sports bike getting thrashed around. I love the air filling sound of a ducci vtwin going past with race pipes.

Dunno why renegade thinks they sound shiiet to be honest.

Tristoner -inline fours "spooling"? I guess ur 250 does rev insanely high. and tiny things look like the size of a turbo, and you ARE gay...

I dont know if bikes will get targeted though, its like the boy racer issue, but you dont see V8 drivers complaining about tickets for loud exhausts. I guess its how "bad ass" we can look (wear KB shirt, we are apparently asshole hooligans that partake in shinanigans), and how much the cops like the smell of the sweet sweet 2strokes.
You 4 strokers lose out.

They were also talking about some other car - I forget which one (I blame age! lol) - but it apparently has an "exhaust valve/flap" so when going hard out, the flap opens and you can hear it two miles away!! Thats what started the "noise" debate..

'Spooling' word is usually reserved for turbos and jets... but yeah if you have it in a high gear and just roll from down on it sounds pretty darn cool!

V8's can quite often come factory that loud, anything factory loud is legal eg screamin eagle pipes for harleys can be done at factory/are factory parts from memory so that should be fine.

As resisdent in the area i can tell you that while the speedway wasnt complying with the reg's. The at least werent pissing me off every 2 weeks....all year. Unlike eden park.
Whenever i come home from work and there is a game on, my road is bumper to bumper with cars on both sides, and the fuckers dont park on the grass.....no they leave 2 feet from the gutter so they dont kerb they're shitty mags.
End result is a 2 lane road turns into a 3/4 lane mayhem.
Im at the point now where i turn into my road and boot it..... so if your on the other end, you better slam your vehicle in reverse cos i wont be stopping so you can do a 300-point-turn to get out of my way.

The problem in "reform Brittain" at the moment is that it is easier for the authorities to claim they are addressing the problem (in this case) of too loud "not for highway use" bike exhausts by introducing new laws rather than enforce the existing law.

I have heard that there are proposals to reduce bike noise limits (which are greater than the limits for cars). However, I can't believe 70db when my lawnmower has a sticker on it saying 104db !!!

I see my RF900 (with a standard can) is rated at 91 db (A) at 5k revs...

74??? Yeah right.

I'm not a fan of loud exhausts, but less of a fan for stupid legislation. What about cars? Does the same (or similar) apply?

What %age of bikes come off the production line achieving <74db anyway?

10?

AND there's the wee thought that bikes are invisible enough already - and now they're legislating away any audio cues... weren't the manufacturers of electric vehicles actually ADDING noise to their vehicles (speaker playing engine noises if memory serves...)

Anyone know how loud that's going to be?

AAAAAAARERRRRRRRRRRGGH Fwits - the lot of them

Ah the old problem. You need to manuevre yourself a bit. If its solid, try contracting evenly for as long as possible. You need to reduce the speed the bomb hits the water. You want the shape of a torpedo, so like a good diver, visualise the fall.

Next thing is to move your cheeks closer to the front. the contour of the bowl should slow mr. christmas down a tad - watchout tho as you can leave nasty skid marks. I prefer a power dump with this technique. get it over and faster. If you can't sit far up front, you can do a reverse bronco - where you sit the other way.

However, if its runny after a bad night on the chilli, your stuffed. Don't moan too loud as all your hard work will become undone.

Any probs PM me.

Cheer

Strat.

There are exceptions to everything genius, of cource ducati's sound good, but as a generaliztaion (sp) sports bikes sound utter crap, I hate being at the lights and some joker pulls up (more like races up slams on the brakes and skids to a halt) with some tiny sports bike. The worst being 250cc 2 strokes....... Dont get me wrong, I love all kinds of bikes, sports, crusiers, everything inbetween, dirt bikes, scooters, mopeds the list goes on and on. The only bikes i dont like are BMW and a few other bikes but most sports sound crap.

Wouldnt that be great for the boy racers . . . no need to go buying an expensive new exhaust to get that big bore sound, just upload a new .wav file to your car. Dont have a turbo but still want a blow off valve - no problem! Just record the sound next time your tagging some poor cunts wall and tell the car to play it every time you change gears.

Muppets . . .

And John - just drop some toilet paper in the bowl before you dump, makes for a great "bomb disarmer".
