Hi All,

My names Tristan and I'm based in Wellington. Had my bike for a month now and absolutely loving it! It's only an FXR150, so it's small, but the way I see it, it's a good place to start. Used to thrash my sisters scooter around so I'm not completely hopeless.

Cheers :)

Welcome along...

Might see you on the road sometime eh? Just remember you don't have to break every speed record or bone in the first 6 weeks of riding eh? gently does it....

Cheers guys, but you all seem to think I'm gonna crash. I'm only riding in the city at the moment, mainly using it to ride back and forth from work. Only been on the motorway twice and the wind was insane!! I guess you get used to it

I dont think you are going to crash, most riders have some experiences in their time they would rather they didnt have.

Just take care and be aware most cage drivers wont give you a second look out there.

Riding in the wind is a beautiful thing and something you will get used to in no time.

The city is about 400 times MORE dangerous than the open road.

The best way to tackle the wind is to relax. The bike won't move around anywhere as much if your upper body is relaxed.

Sorry mate, didnt want to imply that you will, but I think almost everyone does.

I used to think that I woudnt crash cause im 'careful' and not doing hero stuff. One freakish wind gust and braking lesson later and I have come to understand its 'when' am I going to crash next. :)

You're probably right about that. I've already had a couple of cage drivers pull out in front of me. There was a van on sunday that I swear was an inch away from hitting me. Cheers for the tip about the wind

Been riding for nearly 40 years , and I haven't crashed yet. Of course, I am the site nana. Plenty of others here with similar experience though. So, no, we don't think you're going to crash. Cheer up. But, it is a fact that city riding is more dangerous than motorway or open road. Think how many people have minor "fender bender" accidents around town, in the supermarket car park etc. In a cage, maybe a broken light, bent bumper. On a bike, can be more serious.

Also, experience says that young guys, starting out on bikes, are very good and sensible for the first few months. Then the squidley daemons seize them, they start complaining about not being able to go fast enough , exchange their bike for a race replica, and run it into a ditch. Not saying you will, just looking at the percentages. If you survive that, you should have every reason to hope for many years of safe motorcycling.

As to the wind, yes you get used to it. It's more scarey than dangerous, I've NEVER known anyone actually blown off on a public road. Do a search there's lots of threads about how to handle it.

Oh, and welcome. Ride fast, ride safe, keep the black squishy bits down and the pink squishy bits up

I really hate to prove you wrong Ixion but I WAS blown of the road by a freak gust of wind (into a rocky/grassy bank)up by Lake Ferry, on my friggin birthday too! I am still in the process of fixing my bike now, not to mention the damage it did to my knee! I also know a couple of guys that were "blown" of the road themselves....

Have mentioned it but I was blown around (not intended to sound dodgy) whilst going hard into a corner going down the Taka's. It was more the way I reacted (jammed brakes on of course) that caused MY crash.

How lovely of you to share....

Yea, even though the wind was pretty strong I probably could have avoided the accident, ah well thats what experience is for eh?!

Yes, I HAVE known a few come to grief that way- being blown around, and go for the brakes. Though Ms Str8_Jacket's sounds as she was actually physically blown across the road into a bank. First time for everything I guess, and a very light bike, and light rider maybe didn't help.

Best advice is keep the power ON even accelerate, and change down to the lowest gear you can.

Less panic and more 'target fixation'. A useful term to get to know and be aware of. Totally the reason I binned really. As Ixion says, better to have to power ON. I got nervous going downhill into a corner the other day, braked and clutch in and my bike got REAL unstable in a mere zepher of a wind.

Apparently my bike weighs 118kgs (dry)

Welcome to the madhouse
I've heard it is 80% rider, 20% bike or something like that.

A classmate used to piss all over me on one of those suzuki 150s (IIRC it was the same as yours) until I got my confidance up again (I was riding the DL650!) Still he corners harder and faster than I do but I do a lot of two up riding so I guess I'm trained a bit different.

Good choice of bike, good to $1.40 I hear.

I learned to ride in Wellington and if you can survive that, you're off to a good start! I had an RG150 because the FXR hadn't come out yet - I probably would have gone for one of them if it had, they're nice bikes.

Yep. I love her. Shes my new baby. The missus is already complaining that I "spend too much time with the bike" and that I waste petrol by going on "unnessesary" rides. I just love it. I'll get back home after a good blat and want 2 go out again. Yeah, Wellys a bit frantic and the hills can be a bitch but I've been driving here for 4 years, so I know the streets
