Making Housing For The Escort

I'm making a clear housing and bracket for my Escort Radar Detector. They are not waterproof (and don't seem to like the vibes ether).
I'm using 4mm Perspex (got a couple of free off-cuts, 4mm and 2mm, from WE Woods LTD, Whangarei) as the main material to build it out of and will be mounting it between the left rear-vision mirror and the blade. This will give the detector the best "view" of the road (front and back) as well as not get it the way of the dash, and plus give me a reasonable view of it's LED panel.
Long time since I have used Perspex and can't remember what adhesive to use on it. Shop reckoned silicone, but that does not cement it. Can anyone remember what the best adhesive is for Perspex?

i mounted mine using the mirror bolts and H frame thingo on the CBR. one thing to note is that it might be better on the right hand side as to allow vision of the clocks, well had to on mine



oh and the really dont like the rain, mine got slightly damp and dont work anymore

I always used sound for the radar to save looking at the LEDs

Mine's starting to look good. It's all perspex and sits outside of the blade. Will be giving it cooling holes so the unit does not get too hot.

Perspex is a tradename for cast acrylic sheet. Methylene chloride based cements are used. I'd try a model shop maybe or a decent hardware place will have it

either that or superglue - anything that melts the plastic then re-bonds it will work fine. marley spouting glue should work.

wouldn't it just have been easier to leave the speedo uncovered so you could see how fast you were going?

Were you aware that you can get a custom made cover from Radar Direct for the Escort? It's a rippper - made out of the same stiff moulded plastic that blister packs are made from. You get 2 for $69. Completely waterproof. Rapt with mine. If you want a photo, I can take one when i get home.

wouldn't it just have been easier to leave the speedo uncovered so you could see how fast you were going?

hence why it was moved to the right hand side, allowing a decent view of both the speedo and the tacho

I made a perspex box for a my video camera, I would suggest creating the box by heating the perspex and bending it, this gives nice rounded corners and you'll only need to glue a couple of seems. Interested in seeing the pictures of what you've got so far.

be careful that the perspex will crack / shatter if hit by a stone at speed. So might want to put a sheet of polycarbonate over it for impact protection or not using the perspex for structural mount in case the perspex shatter and drops the detector.
