Salmon Fishing

I've booked a day off work tomorrow in order to take my lad fishing. I've never been salmon fishing so I'm after some advice please.

I've got a heavy lure/spinner and was thinking of heading to the mouth of the Waimak river, as the salmon don't appear to have headed up stream yet.

So - any tips, tricks would be greatly appreciated.

No.1 tip has to be.....Ensure you purchase a whole salmon on the way home, remove price tag/wrapper. Tell as many tall tales as you wish.

First and foremost you are going to need a licence. Ring Fish and Game for details. If I remember correctly children licences are free but they need to carry them. Probabley a bit early for salmon at the Waimak but as with all fishing if you do not have your line in the water...............

The optimum time to fish for salmon at the mouth of the Waimak is on a falling tide. About two hours before the tide turns and an hour or two on an incoming tide. Line weight should be anywhere from 15lbs (7kg) to 20lbs(9kg)

Lure weight somewhere about 28 to 35grams. You could use either a Ticer or Zeddie. A lot of salmon fisherman are useing Kwiksilver of about 28grams.

I will be down between the bridges tomorrow night probably on the North side fishing for searun.
