i'm really needing a fix or ideas. need to change the rear suspension on my 94 cbr1000f. it's totaly fine riding as is, but 2 up loaded with gear and it's not giving me any room to move.
i need to change it.
been told try the blackbird suspension that might work. don't know if it even fits but how are the blackbirds 2 up with gear?
or are there any alternatives?
if i don't get a better set up for the southisland trip i might have to leave the lady at home.
and i would like her to come with me. so help anyone
cheap alternatives?
or just alternatives?
and who knows how to change these things?

Just done for a friend’s bandit. Ok it is the budget job, but the problem is the spring needs to be stiffer. You can’t compensate for heaps of extra weight without a stiffer spring. Guess this is pretty obvious.

First off. If the shock is leaking oil & pressure then it needs attn. A few people will rebuild them like cycleworks in Wgtn, Braun(?) engineering make new shafts if rqd, check back of Bikemart.

OK so you need to get a stiffer spring. Take the old one off & give to a spring maker along with the shock & say make me a stiffer one by say 25% which is a big jump but might be necessary. Jump on the Racetech website, they have spring calculators. If you don’t give the spring maker your shock they may make it so it almost, but doesn’t fit.

So how do you remove the spring? Be careful or pay someone. Can tell you how to do it, but it requires care & some mechanical nouce. Springs need some attn or they bite.

You can run but you cant hide from a stiifer spring ... Racetech site is good ...Its usually a good starting point ...for mx a few people find their settings a little ( a little ) soft ,

The advice about taking the old spring is dead on as spring inner dia change as the spring works ...
I would give them the force/ deflection ..Kg/mm number ,,which will be generated by the racetech calculator ,,,

and apart from all that ,,the oil in the shock would have broken down ,,,The Cbr damping rod is POO POO ..and the shaft/seals are probably crapped out

seals cheap , shaft about 120 ish dollars ( well CR ones are!!!) ..

and while you are at that CLEAN the front forks out ,,as the preload spacers rub on the spring then the crap keeps the shims apart and you lose all sorts of damping control ( only at high shaft speeds do you regain any sort of damping ,,)

The motor in those 94 cbr were good oil fed cam chain adjuster??? just as usual ,,,Honda penny pinched on the suspension ..( SuZuki MX bikes were bang on that year ,,,)

I am in the same boat ,,,the Engine frame werent that bad ,,ie good enough for my skills ,,but the suspension is utter crap ....I am even thinking of springing for ohlins ,,as in Ohdear how much ...

If I cant revalve these lot properly ........

Stephen

good luck BTW there are spring makers in NZ ,,but I had my springs made by ashcroft springs in England ,,the service was very prompt ,,and reasonable ,,NZ kept on giving me the fridayites excuses ,..so I just went elsewhere ....

The CBR has a tiny little shock and nothing else fits in its place sorry. I was hacking around on the net yesterday and came across a new one for sale for F... all but i cant remember where. Try searching around. i got one for a mate used but only 4000k for $150NZ (including freight) from USA. If ya go for a 92/93 model one they have a remote resivoir where the 94/95 doesn't. Happy searching.
