View Full Version : my 160 kph crash....

my day was very eventfull my ride lasted 4minutes and 1 crash.... iwas heading down a straight just out of eketahuna towards pahiatua and was gaining on a cage quite quickly... so theres this nice lonnnnnnnng corner ahead and a great grass verge, so in my 2 day old leather jacket and new jeans i speed up to 160 to pass said cage, thats all fine and gravy, i pull out and theres no cages coming around the lonnnnng corner and i accelerate from 160 a wee bit, as i am beside the cage i hit some corrugations in the road.....and my bike packed a huge wobly dropped on my now barely working leg and decides to carry on passing the car on its side....so natualy i fly through the air and bounce spin roll and do general gymnastics untill i hit a farm fence post, break the friggin fence post continue down the grass verge and just for good measure hit the fence again and break that too, roll for a while, bounce on head and stop in a pile 60 somthing metres down the road. all the gymnastics happened on grass fortunatly. i must be the luckiest guy around to survive a 160kph crash and walk away, if i was wearing my codura jacket my back and ribs would be getting glued back together. my bike is pretty fucked as logic would say, but its mainly cosmetic......so now i have a very badly bruised body and one stuffed bike and a very bad experience in my hands.......i dont have insurance.....and there musta been something wrong with the bike too do that:blink: i will not be put of bike though. i cant believe i survived, thanks to the bikers that stopped to chek up on me:yes:

Im so sorry to hear about your mishap DL...I know you were humming about your new bike. Unfortunatley for you your mistake cost your bike. Lucky for you it didnt cost your your health. And he should feel bad. How would you feel if you were in the car that was narrowly missed by a bike sliding down the road at 100mph. I'm all for riding like a complete fool at times but its learning to choose those times that is really important.

Mate, just make sure that when you get back on the road that you are there long enough for me to be able to meet you huh? I find your enthusiasm (sp) refreshing here on KB.

Its a pity that the first lesson some have to learn is done at 160km/h and not at 2km/h like my first one in the driveway :).

ACC/registration is so high,

when you goto hospital they dont ask weather you are on a rode bike or a trail bike nothing against trail riding but arent we carrying the xtra fees for them too? have a day off hey have a couple of weeks chuck it on the acc bill. i dont think acc/registration fees are just because of road crashes we just might as well get some of the portion that unlike others are paying in

I agree, a decent 250 will do plenty for a 16yr old (like myself) although their cost is now a drawback, my 87' does the commuting job well and keeps up on the medium paced rides with dad and co.
And i hope you been in contact with the fence owner, as a farmers son next to a main road i've done plenty of work on broken fences that noone owned up to.

Afterall you're still in one piece which is good news.

rebuild, it'll still cost less than another decent ride. [the bike was worth $4500 when bought 2 weeks ago privatly and i got it for $1930] so i owe her $2570 in a manner of speaking.

I have had similar (but no crash) stuff happening exiting corners at 140+ with corrugations and crappy road work. Could have been just as bad. This (same with me) was really a case of just speeding in the wrong place at the wrong time.
edit: and all on a perfectly learner legal zxr250c...

Don’t give a rats what you where on, just glad you’re ok!
Binned my one last Sunday for going too fast into a corner and ACC can foot the bill for that as well!
After 16 years of paying rego on bikes and cars I'm glad someone is using the money and its not just going to the thieving swine’s in the beehive!
Hope the bikes not too bad, take tomorrow off and get some arnica for the bruising.

The "Holier than thou" shit on this site is beginning to really piss me off!
I take it its just me and about 10 other people who speed, lane split and do other stupid/fun things while the rest of you study the osh regulations every night so you can come down on those who are actually living there lives even if it means having some scars at the end of it all?
You cant all be that old that you can’t remember your own youth!
160? So what? My 250 will do that along with any other 250 so what is the point of kicking him when he's down?
It was a Honda Bros, not 1000RR! :Playnice:

Too bloody right, I'm afraid I have very little sympathy for anyone who posts a "woe is me" thread like this. Yes, it's highly likely we all exceed the speed limit at times, but to brag about doing 160kph-plus while overtaking a car is bloody stupid. Just be thankful it's your own sorry arse that's hurting and not some innocent bystander.

Get over it, learn some respect for the road and other road users and then perhaps you will deserve some sympathy if you crash again. Tosser.

Writing isn't the offence. Its simply a written account of what happened that can be traced back to a person or an address, which can be linked to a vehicle, which can be linked to a crash scene, which can be linked back to the written account of the events etc etc etc. Everything can be traced to some degree.

The bros 650 is a good bike ,,except the front forks ..the whole lot should be binned ..the same happened to me ...ripple cranked over in the company of a VFR 750 ... back in 92 /3 ish ... Ducks hill in London if anyone knows it ,,on the way to the pub
Anyway over the ripples and she washed out on me I had to straighten up haul on the anchors and complete the turn ,,,..The Frame on those thing is as Stiff as ...and they Do handle ...But Those forks take a bit of work to get them from crap ,,,to tolerably crap ...

Stephen
BTW ,,I also Binned it at 160 ,,, on an RG250 ,,,so join the club ....( I learnt my lesson and I cant be trusted ,,so I bought an Enfield ,,,,try getting that to !60 km/h

*almost* any 650 will be too powerful for someone with only a small amount of road experience ...and adrenalin is a powerful force, no matter what your age, it will take over and make you do stupid things, we have all been there.
At 16 years you think you cant die, at 36 you KNOW you can, thats the only real difference, it gives you a slight pause before doing something stupid.

Thats fair enough...I just didnt articulate myself very well.:)

Ducatilover says in a previous post that his bike went into a slapper, the tyre sizes are non-standard, he doesn't know what the susp settings are.
Then a week later he tries to take a bumpy sweeper at 160 k's plus.
He had his warning back then.

.....and there musta been something wrong with the bike too do that:blink: i will not be put of bike though. i cant believe i survived, thanks to the bikers that stopped to chek up on me:yes:

Firstly, like everyone I'm very glad you survived. Secondly, odds are you won't survive much longer unless you face up to something that you are denying -- "and there musta been something wrong with the bike too do that". No mate, there's nothing wrong with the bike (or nothing more than their ever was). The reason for the bin is simple - inexperience. Excessive speed, not watching the road surface. Not saying it can't catch out the most experienced and catious rider in the world. But : an inexperienced rider, riding (illegally, though I don't really think that's relevant) a bike too powerful for his skills, overtaking on a corner (always iffy), not watching the road surface, dubious tyres, unknown suspension settings- mate, it wasn't if it was when. I've been watching for the post and praying it wouldn't be real bad news.

Get back on a bike as soon as y'can, but get some training. Do some of the roadcraft courses, think about why there are rules about learners, and speed limits and such. And also that you are really important ALIVE to a lot of people. Just make a little picture in your mind of your Mum opening the door and seeing a cop standing there - and her face, because she knows what the cop's come to say before he says it. And her sitting crying at the kitchen table , with the family gathered round trying to comfort her and knowing there is no comfort to give. I've seen it too many times - don't want it have it happen. Back off the throttle , next time , you might not be so lucky.

that picture went through my mind as i bounced/rolled etc, it was not a good picture. you have a good point about the bike though, and the inexperience. the tyres though are the appropriate size for the rims. the bike has aftermarket rims so it has an 18 inch rear, instead of the standard 17 inch rear. i also just got the suspension settings changed and the fork seals replaced and the back was great but the forks were noticably softer. i am restoring the bike and am going to ride more sanely. i kinda appreciate my life now:2thumbsup

It's not hypocrisy.

Your attitude and others I might add, is that no one's experiences have any worth, because being young and stupid is allowed. It is, so long as you learn from "youth", and the other "hypocrites" lessons as well. History isn't pointless, it's a foundation.

You're on the right path Ducatilover. Just stick around so you can get that Ducati.

I don't necessarily think you are a dumbfuctard (very creative use of the English language by the way), but I think you are riding WAY beyond your abilities and it's YOU who needs to get over yourself. Take a minute to think what would have happened if that car had suddenly swerved to avoid an obstacle on the road in front of it, or the driver decided to turn or stop suddenly without warning - rather than bragging about your "near death" experience, you could have been dead for real. That driver would NOT have been expecting you to be travelling at 160kph and no matter how many people here want to pat you on the back for being such a cool dude and hot rider, in my opinion you are a dangerous prick who shouldn't be on the road until he can learn some respect for other road users.

Just because you can't see anyone else being a saint, is that an excuse to act this way? I am not claiming to be perfect and I have ridden at higher speeds than that myself on a public road, but the difference is when and where I did it. You've got a long way to go before you realise that speed alone is not an indicator of riding ability.

"This is an odd and perplexing film that also has no social redeeming values, or for that matter, any real point of why it was ever made. While controversial films occasionally come along, at least they sometimes have some redeeming quality to them. They may have high artistic values or use their extreme subject matter and the presentation of it for some statement (such as in "A Clockwork Orange"). This film's purpose, however, is just to showcase a bunch of sick individuals who like to have sex after getting turned on by car crashes..." (http://www.screenit.com/movies/1997/crash.html)

the bike has aftermarket rims so it has an 18 inch rear, instead of the standard 17 inch rear.

That alone has changed the steering head angle, steepened it. So that could contribute to instability if the forks weren't dropped in the clamps to compensate.
I too learnt the hard way that if a bike tends to wobble, don't push it till you find out why.

Yeah I’ll say he's fucking lucky. I bailed at 80k last December and I only went through 1 post and I’m still having problems with my leg and I’m still missing a good inch of bone out of my Tibia. Ducatilover, I seriously hope you take some positive from this mistake and learn well. It could have easily been a different story and we would have been reading about it in the NZ herald.
