Have you still got 'em? Are they giving you grief? Does the Toof fairy visit you arfter they got pulled out? Did you look down the (female) dentist's/nurses blouse? How long did the operation take?

Ok, ok, in all seriousness - I have to have two of mine out or suffer ongoing pain (headaches etc.) I'm not ooking forward to the cost for a start (Approx. $1200 that I could spend on a new bike) or the pain. Who's had this experience before?

(Approx. $1200 that I could spend on a new bike) or the pain.

That is why I bear the pain, woresened by damn sinus atm. Apparently there is a dental surgery on Molesworth St that will allow you to "pay of your debt" weekly/monthly etc.. But still I heard that its closer to $2000, thats just farkin ridiculous!

Leave em. The pain comes and goes. I wouldn't have been able to get my CBR if I had to have my wisdom teeth done.

Don't worry, they will buff right out.

I had all four pulled out while under anesethic (sp) years ago.... by a dentist called Dr Hook...... bastard did cut my nerves inside my mouth... so I had a tingling feeling there for a long time... naturally he had to wait until that tingling feeling went away before he got paid..lol
I also bit inside my mouth over night and ended up with a huge bloodblister in my mouth, which made me gag until I went in and pulled it out.. YUK aye.
(The roots on my teeth are hooked inwards hence being knocked out)

Dont drive/ride there.
Get a taxi home or someone to drive you home.
Take painkillers as soon as the stuff they use starts to wear off.
Eat babyfood - diary yoghurt real soft food for a couple of days.
Dont drink anything HOT after you get home.

Mind you it depends on which they take them out.. local or fully under.
Under full - no riding for 48 or 72 hours. (double check that)
Local - wait til the next day.
Do what the dentist advises you to do.

When you get back on your bike put a scarf across your mouth for about a week or so.. you don't want a chill geting into the wound.

There will be NO MORE PAIN once the swelling has gone down.

You can get them pulled out a lot cheaper than $1200.
Ring around.

I had a dentist ram a spike in one of my rotten top ones years ago, it dam near killed me as all i could hear was the splitting of bone and the pain to go with it.

A year later my bottom two had to go also. Under a local anasthetic in the chair the dental surgeon began. I felt like the bastard was going to break my jaw as he had that much pressure on it, took about 45mins.

It cost me approx $ 500.00 for each of the bottom ones, even with a local i could still feel the dull pain of my nervs reeling in agony.

Probably took me 2 weeks to get over each one coming out, not fun but had to happen. I have one top one left and i don't want that to cause me a problem. My womans always on at me to go and get regular checks but i can't bring myself to do it. ( Even though i know shes right).

I've still got mine, but I'd say the main reason is because I only have 28 teeth in total - including the wisdom teefies (didn't have any out, only that many grew!) - so there was always room for them to move a bit if they wanted to.

I don't want to scare you (much) but my Dad had his out years ago. His appointment was at 7.30am and I had a checkup booked for 11. I got there in time to see what I thought was a drunk guy stagger out of the dentist's rooms, covered in splashes of blood - it was my father! One of the teeth had grown around his jaw bone and the dentist had to chip it away - ouch!

But I'm sure YOU'LL be fine! Toothache is horrible, best get it fixed early before it gets any worse, you won't regret it.

Some get them out real bloody easy........ bastards.

Your wisdom teeth may come out real easy and you may have no problems at all.

But do ring around to see if you can get a cheaper quote..
I think you can go to the hospital at a real cheap cost as well.
I have heard of some getting them out at $200 a tooth.

Its cos they are right at the back and can be awkward to get at..
Depending on how wide your mouth can open up as well.
Yep some people do have little mouths.

I've had all 4 yanked/cut out at once - I had no choice really, they were growing on weird angles and causing mayhem.
Was an interesting experience for sure.

1st the nurse collapsed my vein trying to administer the general. Finally got me druged and then it was sweeeet. Although I was fully awake, I felt NOTHING the whole op. Was'nt perving down anyones top though - the bastard dentist wore MIRRORED glasses and I watched every cut and every gush of blood in full colour 5 inches from my face!
After I was able to walk back to my hospital bed unassisted (others before me got the wheelie treatment), was fully alert but still pain free. Had ice straped to both sides of my face and a wee bowed tied on top of my head (pretty) and zonk... :thud: was out like a light. Woke up 4 hrs later to scrambled eggs and yoghurt.
Wasnt too painful in the days to come but the stitches had left little movement in my jaw. Could only eat things I could shove through a 1cm gap and didnt have to chew.

If you think they are gonna cause probs Colapop, get it done!

Agreed with the above statement, not trying to scare you off. The pains probably not quite as bad as is made out, it's just one of lifes ordeals that is best dealt with sooner than later.

If you have it under a local for each tooth like i did, you really only feel uncomfortable whlie it's being done.

Get it done and then you can enjoy riding in the sun again sooner than later.

I'm angling on getting a twofer. I've told my wife that if I'm going to have to spend serious cash on the teef then I should get a new bike while I'm at it. The logic is that if I didn't get the health insurance when I did then we'd be up for a lot more. Got my eye on a nice little Gixxer toof-itty!

Ths op. is not going to be on of the nice ones coz I have severe pericoronitis. Which basically means the gum is overgrowing the tooth and is inflamed. Yesterday my jaw was all swolled up like I was eating lollies or something.

Had mine sugically removed under general anesthetic - took all of 10 minutes. Was a little uncomfortable for a few days after that, however nothing that I could not handle.

I was like a few other KB'ers and lived with the pain for so long, however once it was done, I was a lot happier... my suggestion if you have the money try and get it done as soon as possible. Dont open yourself up tp the possibilty of future complications.

I had all 4 out last year under general anasthetic at Bown Hospital. I was out cold, woke up and they were all gone. Just stayed as medicated as I could for the week after that and I didn't have too much trouble. it took a few months for the holes in my gums they left to heal up properly though. I think it was $2200ish under health insurance and half of that was for the general anasthetic.

I'm glad I did get around to getting them done then though.. they were hurting on and off for a few years before that, but started hurting constantly and cutting my gums up which wasn't really the most fun thing.

Got all four of mine out years ago as they were giving me problems. It was expensive but I am glad I did it.

I had a general so it was painless. Bit of blood in the mouth the next morning but washed that out and all was well.

If you wanted to save money you could always ask about getting it done without a general e.g. using Hypnovel (aka "midazolam") to stun you first instead. I have had lesser dental jobs done under that and it's pretty good.

Only your dental surgeon can tell you if that is a realistic option in your individual case - it could be the worst idea anyone ever had - but he or she will know.

IF IT IS SORE GET THEM OUT!!! I had the same thing as you a few years ago and I was in A&E at 2am to get codine. Never in my life had I felt pain like a badly infected wisdom. I paid $1500 and go all 4 out at once which is best. No problems at all and didn't feel a thing. Best advice is to get general, and do it all at once. 3 days and you will be away laughing.

Don't worry about cost as it is your heatlh and if they get worse you will be trying to take them out yourself!! My girlfriend used Brendan Young at Bowen and he was great. Good luck:niceone:

I have. It sucks. You have to get it done anyway or it'll only get worse. Mine were particularly good at trapping food against the next tooth along, which means that even once the wisdom teeth were out there was some fairly major civil engineering needed doing right at the back of my mouth.

F*cking funny that was, obviously.

KILLER ADVICE: Make ABSOLUTELY DAMN CERTAIN you score a syringe with a long and curved end. I was given one and it was an absolute blessing for getting shit like bits of mincemeat out of the holes. Which, BTW, are huge. You sorta squirt *warm* water down the holes to clean them out. And, yes, this whole experience is gross from start to finish.

Get it done. Book it, set the money aside, sort some description of financing, maybe even shop around for a deal (I just went with someone recommended by my normal dentist). Do it under local 'cos it's shitloads cheaper and not that bad (you do get some wicked drugs), but do get it done because it's not going to get any better.

Most of my patients who need wisdom teeth removed are referred to an Oral Surgeon, a specialist who does this each and every day. Your average dentist would not be as practised, and most of the horror stories are from dentists, not surgeons. Manish is one of these oral surgeons. Most insurance companies that cover up to $60,000 for surgery will cover the full cost of oral surgery if done by an Oral Surgeon, so it may not cost you a cent. Surgeons usually claim direct from the insurance, so you don't need to pay first. Surgeons "usually" do wisdom teeth under sedation these days, ie hypnovel, as someone mentioned earlier. This twilight sleep means you are still conscious,(safer) but don't care what happens to you, and don't remember anything afterwards. It's been many years since I've had someone come back and sya they had a bad experience with wisdom teeth. If you have more than one tooth that needs to be removed, get them all done at the same time.... why go thru this more than once!!

Get the pericoronitis resolved/treated before your surgery, so that theres less chance infection afterwards. Keeping it very clean by brushing, despite hurt and bleeding will help, as will antibacterial rinses like "savacol", and even hot salt mouth soaks will help. The tooth should be symptomless when the teeth are removed, ideally.

With anything teeth related, deal with it ASAP, unless the dentist says otherwise. Most things become more complicated and painful, both in treatment and in the wallet if left. They are also more prone to giving problems afterwards..

Just my 2 cents...

Good luck, you won't know yourself once the pain has gone. Problems with teeth are guaranteed to make you grumpy.

As for the murder house in Willis Street, it is now flash apartments! I never went there for dental treatment myself, but in 1995 Wellington Polytechnic's School of Journalism was housed on the ground floor. The dental part still operated from one of the upper floors and we'd get busloads of kids coming for treatment. One day they were making a hell of a noise so one of my fellow students went out and said "STOP MAKING ALL THAT NOISE!" The kids just looked at him and carried on, so he asked if they were going to see the dental nurses. When they said yes, he said "Good, and I hope it FUCKING hurts!" That shut them up!

About 10mins after waking up I was feeling pretty chipper, although a little foggy - apparently I'm not allowed to operate heavy machinery today damnit! Got mine gone a few years ago (like 2... I guess)

I only had three and had 'em all out in one go for the princely sum of $400 or thereabouts.

St Lukes 24 hour/emergency Medical Centre has a dentist practicing there. Actually he's a part time dentist (full time maxillofacial (face bone) surgeon).

Young guy, REALLY cool, and as good as they get. Highly recommended.

He gave me a sleeping pill (or two?) to take beforehand, and I rapidly adopted a "shot gives a hit" attitude... zip zing zap and all 3 are out. One of them was pretty bad too (apparently).

A bit of pain for a few days, as is normal with Wizzy teeth, but if I had to do it again, I'd be heading straight there

11th December 2005, 23:28
Sure do, PAIN. Wisdom teeth do several things, they impact on your rear molers causing pain which can sometimes feel like it's your jaw. They can also sit right on nerves in your lower jaw and can cause inflamation and pain, they often come through the gum and become infected (regularly)

I know all this because I too put off getting my wisdon teeth out for about 4 years. I finally said enough is enough after the same wisdom tooth became infected for the 5th time.

I had all four out under general because I'll be damned if I want to hear or see the funky shit they do to get teeth out. Plus one of my lower ones was sitting right on a nerve.

Hows your swelling going Colapop? I was like a beach ball for about a week. I've got photos you wouldn't believe!

The relief you feel after having them done is outstanding and I highly recommend anyone having any sort of problems with them to get them out.

I paid top shelf for mine as I had it done by a 'noted' guy who apparently was 'the man' at doing them. Try $2500 people!!! Fuck it it was the best money I ever did spend.

Fuck, may have to see if mine need to come out then. My whole throght(sp?) is sore exspecially around the upper left mollar in the back. It also seems to have rotated a bit so now is grinding against the inside of my cheek and the gap just behiind the tooth beneath it aswell. Can't fucking afford it though.

I didnt edit , the above post as it needs to be saud in full
what wasnt mentioned is that wisdom teeth, drain you , you feel tired and are suseptital to the common cold

BTW
U I am still the worlds biggest coward , I WILL get it done ,,,,,buuuut maybe after XMAs ,,,

Yeah still sore, thankfully my boss told me to take today off "if I needed it".
I woke up this morning after having laid on my sore side and f*ck me did it hurt. The codiene/panadol/nuerofen/volrtaren mix has been good though!! Ok ok not all at the same time. I don't really like taking too many drugs but they do help. When it doesn't hurt, from the extraction, it's bloody good. The best part is not having a headache that stretches up the side of my neck from the inside.
The swelling hasn't been too bad at all for me. I haven't had too much to eat over the last couple of days though. Not hungry and hurts when I open my mouth too much. (Those that know me are laughing their nuts off right now!)
Brian, Waylander get it done sooner rather than later, the un-pain is great!

p.s. Got the bill Saturday (they don't piss around) $625. So that's a lot different to 2 1/2 that I was quoted. I think the Anestitist charges separately or something? Cheers for the support - doesn't make the soreness less but makes me feel better. (None of the girls offered to come round and help me feel better though!)

Wow, $625 is pretty good, even if the anaesthetist does charge separately. I had a general recently and the anaesthetist only charged $280 for that.

Bet you are so glad you had the work done, just think how much more you'll enjoy Christmas. Give it a week and you'll be as right as rain! Good luck.

I'll be glad once I stop being sore. But it comes and goes so it's bearable.
I like general anaesthetic. I sort of had a long lazy blink then it was 3/4 hour later. Took about a hour to get properly unfoggy. Then it was sweet.
Getting these teeth out does knock ya round a bit though - I still don't feel 100%. (Although I did manage to take the bike for a warrant and reg. - coz I'm at home sick!!)

Dentist appointment tomorrow. Just to see if it does need removed or if it's just something else wrong with me.

You'll only regret the cost but that'll be made up for in pain free days I'm told.

Either someone who's got no idea and trying to rip you off (what you'd like to hear) or someone who knows exactly what the problem is and can help you with it. Did you dentist mention 'Pericoronitis'? It's a general term to with inflamation of the gums. Amoxycilan's the usual remedy.

Not that I am aware of. Gonna try the penicillin for a while and if it does nothing then I'll find another doctor.

Was only a bit confused cause I've never been in and out that quick before. The guy didn't even use the stephoscope (is that the right name? whatever they hold up to your chest to listen to your heart beat/breathing/whatever else goes on in there) when I told him about the cough I've had for the last month or so.
