View Full Version : Help - I'm thinking of chucking in biking

Speed limits on open roads being reduced.
Bikes being impounded under the boy racer act.
Road conditions worse than ever.
Saturation of roads by swarms of revenue-generating police.
More useless / blind / incompetent drivers out to kill bikers.
30kph over = suspended licence (ie safe passing manoeuvre)
Talk of transponder chips to track vehicle movement (what????)
Getting through grid-lock subject to policeman’s mood at the time.
Front licence plates for motorcycles.
The above are reasons why I’ve suddenly felt like abandoning my plans to buy another bike. It’s been three years since I’ve ridden, and things look so much worse now than they did when I last had my leg over the old stead.
I’ve been looking forward to a new bike, but all of a sudden I don’t know if its worth it. Maybe I just need to take a pill, but I need some words of wisdom KB’ers!!!!!

You do need help -
This is what I suggest. Take a late model bike for a demo ride - come back smiling. All your problems forgoten in an instant.

It's hardly chucking it in if you haven't ridden for three years is it?
In fact, that's three years you've missed out on.
Ignore the fiction in your list and go for a ride.
Or don't

Here's some advice mate-dont give up riding! We all realise that the law is draconian concerning bikers but the only alternative is a cage, which is basicaly a slow death by suffocation, senility and old age. Maybe you should try something along the lines of a supermoto/naked bike so you dont have to go that fast to get a thrill or spend a bit more time going to track days?

Ride because you love it and don't worry what they are trying to do.
Some of it is scare tactics and others will just prove to be an inconvience, just to seperate the real from the pretenders.
Bikers do because they don't want it any other way! :-)
Keep the faith!

Snap out of it man!!
You need to reach down inside yourself, pull yourself up by the bootstraps and lay it on the line while putting your best foot forward.

Don't get down on yourself (get someone else to do that) AFTER you've been for a ride somewhere ... anywhere .... on a good bike, on a good day (sunshining etc)

Buy a small bike. Use it to get into work and home again. It'll pay for itself in parking fees alone.
Then see if you want to get a bigger one.
Remember: 250's are a gateway drug.

Harden up is my advice... throw a leg over a nice looking bike and take it out for a spin, if you come back loving every second you should buy one. If you dont then you should go back to your cage and never become one of those people who says "I used to ride a bike...." or ignores them while driving.
Basically, you will never know if you dont give it a go. You already know all the reasons you shouldnt, what about the ones why you should?

Speed limits on open roads being reduced. - Find roads where 100kph is unsafe and ride them
Bikes being impounded under the boy racer act. - Don't be stupid enough to be caught
Road conditions worse than ever. - get over it
Saturation of roads by swarms of revenue-generating police. - Don't be stupid enough to be caught
More useless / blind / incompetent drivers out to kill bikers. - Don't ride where they are if you're really worried
30kph over = suspended licence (ie safe passing manoeuvre) - 40kph over... Just don't get caught
Talk of transponder chips to track vehicle movement (what????) - Not going to happen any time soon
Getting through grid-lock subject to policeman’s mood at the time. - Move to Nelson (no gridlock)
Front licence plates for motorcycles. - Not happening anytime soon
You're just making excuses!

Yea the rules are getting tougher but its a game.... you just bend the rules..... Someone elses said try a supermoto and i agree. There are lots of ways to get it going on a bike and if the top speed thing doesnt get off because of the risks (to licence or life) go hard another way. How about a little wheelstand after drifting the rear into a round about on a DRZ400 motad?
GSXRs and R1s etc (yea the 600s too) are licence eaters if ya let them but its hard to resist..... a good radar detector and some riding buddys help, so do tight roads with 45k to 75k posted corners in a 100k zone.
Fools in cars.... thats up to you to watch out for but you knew that right? :2thumbsup

Jeesh... Just get back on a bike and get on with it.
All of the things you mention will become minor worries once you get a few k's under your belt on a great day on some nice twisty road out in the countryside. We do it because of the feeling we get from riding and on a good day it just cant be beaten.

Yeah OK, but a lot of that stuff is just conjecture at this stage, it hasn't yet been implemented and will likely take a long time to happen if it ever does. Don't forego what is a hugely enjoyable passion/lifestyle just beacuse of a few negatives.
Like Bartman10 said, go demo a late model bike and I guarantee you'll fall in love with the machines again. Do it now, and THEN see whether any of the transponder chips etc etc come to pass.

In case this is not a wind-up: No ya dork, I meant take it to the limits, i.e. whatever the law lets you do - take it to the extreme without breaking the law.

Well we just fight back...
Screw this, it's still a free country and these idiots have gone too bloody far. I think there is a ground swell of public opinion that would back it as well...
I know how you feel and at times I have thought the same way (in my weaker moments) but I've been doing this all my life and I'm not giving in until they lever the fecking twist grip out of my cold dead hand...
I'm not advocating stupidity here but enough is enough! Do you think Burt Munro or John Brittan would just give up? Harden up mate! IF there is a fight a brewing, I don't plan on being on the loosing side!

I sat on 95 demerits for six months. Slowed me down a bit, but it never made me want to get rid of the bike.
Motu and all the other guys are right. Harden up, or piss off. I'm getting sick of negativity about motorcycles. Let's talk about something much better ...
I've taken recently (as my riding time is a bit limited with kids and stuff) to concentrating my rides into small but intense sessions - my current favourite is out the driveway, three turns and I'm over the Railway lines headed to Wallaceville Hill. From there its over the hill and around to Mangaroa and out just at the hills at the north of Upper Hutt (Plateau Rd) then back again. I can pack more into this quick 20 minute ride than most guys get in a half-days ride - fast corners, slow corners, blind corners over crests on one-lane back roads (if you like that kind of thing), an all-out straight for 1 kilometres, and even some jumps.
And I hardly get over 3rd or 4th gear doing it (with the exception of the 1 km straight), so I'm unlikely to lose my licence.
But its a SHITLOAD of fun.
You don't have to do 280 to enjoy yourself. Get a bike. Find some roads which challenge you without risking your licence.
Then come back and tell us all why you love the bike.
Otherwise fuck off. [/RANT]

An it didn't,couldn't care less.
The same applys to any one of dozens of road rules that have changed over the years.None of it effects a damn thing I do, so WFT.
40 over an you lose your licence, big deal, don't do it or don't get caught doing it.The people it happens to are just idiots. The fact so many bleat about it here just proves the point.

Dont even think about giving up motorbikes. that is what a stupid little man in Wellington wants us to do by sitting in his comftable air conditioned office with nothing else to do but try and ruin peoples lives and he is picking on us bikers this time. Next time he has an itch it will be another group. He more than lickly has never owned or ridden a bike in his life or worst has had an encouter with abike and it has been his fault and like most car owners blames the biker for the accident.
