Just cleaning the splattered bugs and road grime off my leathers.
Need some advice and a quick search turned up nothing...

What's the best method for cleaning and after-cleaning care?
Soap and water? Wire brush? Dubbin? Ear wax? Mink oil?

Warm water and soap for cleanup, avoid getting the leathers to wet, I use a combination of my fingernails and soaking for the crusty bits. Once dry apply 'mothers leather conditioner' with a rag, rub it into the leathers and wipe excess away.
The primary component of 'mothers' is lanolin, if 'mothers is not available in Korea.

Your leathers are now clean, shiny and soft.

weasel water-soak 1 weasel for 6 months and drain into goblet.
A leather manufacturer recommended Neopol furniture polish to condition the leather after cleaning.I also use Jay-el Beeswax leather dressing

i use neopol as well, and have also been told to put my leathers out in full sun and let the pores open up and then rub vaseline into them...this helps soften and also waterproof them...havent tried it yet, but likely will once the sun is really here to stay.

Shaving foam and a damp cloth. The shaving foam is a very mild soap/detergent that isn't strong enough to damage things

Nikwax. Smear it on and use a hair dryer to warm it up. Watch the leather soak it up!

I use saddle oil, have done for years.
It softens the bugs an they just wipe off as your wiping the oil on.

Some great advice - thanks all.

I've heard that as leather gets older it dries out and is more prone to tears etx. I also read on one website that keeping it young and supple can be done with moisturiser (like Vaseline Intensive Care hand cream) which is supposed to get soaked up by the leather and doesn't clog the pores like Dubbin can.
But then I get to thinking, what about if you've got coloured leathers? Aren't the 'pores' already clogged from the paint? Are they full of BS?
Apparently supple is also stronger.

Thats correct, it does dry out. I can at least recommend Mothers Leather Conditioner for at least the car seats! Haven't tried it on my leathers though.

slightly off topic but what about cleaning the inside?? The jacket i have now has been sitting around for a while and i have cleaned and conditioned the outside so the leather is nice and supple again like has been described here but the inside has a musty smell and i've tried a few ways to get it out all to no avail.. Any chance I could just turn it inside out and have the inside dry cleaned?? or is that a big :nono:??

Local guy down our way has a product called Bone dry. Leather conditioner and waterproofing in one. Great product certainly keeps the water out and conditions the leather. Have used it on boots, gloves.seat and trou. He was demonstarating it at the march hare. Great product.

I wouldn't. Elephant wax treats the leather, kepps it breathing [what little breathing it does] and isn't slippery

That's why I use Nikwax Leather Restorer.
For YEARS (like, about 34), I've wondered why there wasn't a "spray on, buff up" leather conditioner. A few years ago, I decided that in order to have the requisite waxes/oils/waterproofspooge in soluble form, the solvents used would be gnarsty to the leather.
So I gave up. Decided it was a lost cause, even iffen I invested lotsa development time/money/elbowgreease to develop summat myself.

Then I was recommended Nikwax, and bought some.
It was in a spray bottle!:gob:

The label said, "Spray on, leave, buff up".
Shirley Knott?

Yup.

However (but!) it also said on the bottle that it would treat a whole 2 garments. :(

That was the only lie on the bottle.

So far, I've treated my jacket 4 times, my gloves (it said to use some other product, but WotTheHay,ItWorx!) four times, and the leather bits on my trou 3 times. And I've used a bit over half, most of which probably ended up in the cloth I used.
Or on the ground.

Meanwhile, all my other leather treatment products languish in the laundry, apart from SnoSeal, which I still use on my boots, even though they <s>are</s> were allegedly 100% waterproof.

I just got Leathers made at Celtic Leathers (awesome by the way). Sam told us to use Baby wipes for cleaning them. Only use the quality ones though, because the cheap ones contain alcohol. Have used Tanners Oil in the past for treating leather, it soaks in so not slippery.

Hey speaking of beeswax what is the name of leather care wax they sell at Gemells Footware in Symonds St?

They suggested me that wax when I ask for Beeswax for my glove and boots care. It worked very well and I liked it but I can't find it since I come back to Japan...

I can't find exact same thing overhere and can't remember the name of it...
I remember it had Elephant's picture on lid.

Would be great to know the name of wax.

Thanks in advance :)

Most of the time it's best to use an official leather cleaning product, as using your own formula with water etc, you run the risk of soaking the leather, which will damage it.

bike leathers can get soaking wet... we ride in the rain
some products designed for horse gear & furniture etc are not good for bike leathers.

even with products recomended for bike leathers dose not mean it will be good for all bike leathers.

there are things to consider; age, type of leather, dyeing and the type of finish when chosing a product

Yup, good stuff. Rub it in with your hands, the heat melts it & you can get into all those nooks & crannies. softens your digits up too.
