now ive been looking at these for a while now. theres not much on this site about them and google comes back with next to nothing.

just wondering if these are worth the money?, ive seen the video clip where they get dragged behind a dragster, but thats only on their butts, when you fall off a bike you dont just slide on your ass, you bounce.

has anyone crashed in these? i no they have not armor but ild wear my motox knee padds under most the time.

How often do you just 'slide' in a bin though, not very often I would think!?

NhuanH wore a pair to a KB event last Thursday, he looked casual in them and I spose felt quite comfortable, just like normal jeans...but not good protection IMO.

I havent got armour in any of my leathers, so they'd be awesome for me huh. Or I should buy more expensive leathers next time. Or this time.

i would personaly NOT ride in them because of the way i ride, they may be more protective then normal jeans but why not get some leather pants that show of you size [in my case lack of] in the battle axe area? there are some fairly decent ones ive seen for 200 bucks, draggin jeans are 240+ arent they? get something impact resistant said my nearly split knee cap.....i prfer my leather jacket to my codura now after having my "slip" and finding armoured leather products very good.....sorry i'm ranting i just need a bloody hug....:blip:

IVE PERSONALLY TESTED DRAGIN JEANS MANY TIMES INCLUDING A 200 KMH SPILL AND IT GOT TO FLESH NOWHERE , I SWEAR BY THEM , I THINK THEIR BETTER THAN LOWER QUALITY LEATHER PANTS BUT NOTHING BEATS TOP QUALITY LEATHER.
GET THEM IF ANYTHING THEIR CHEAPER THAN SKINGRAFTS

Seen several "crashed" Draggin jeans and I've always been impressed how they hung together, better than cheap Buffalo hide leathers, that's for certain.

As for tumbling in a crash, I've only ever done that once in about 10 crashes ranging from 50km/hr to 220km/hr, and that was only because I stood up while still sliding at about 50km/hr because it felt slow enough to do so. Amazing how far you fly when you do that. I think you need to visualise how to manage a crash. It's really important to control the resulting slide. But then I've never highsided, which is the only way I can see the catastrophic tumbling coming about, previously mentioned.

I wear them without hesitation. They are perfect for commuting, and on casual Friday, I don't even have to get changed. They aren't as hot as leather trousers, and if I'm just cruising about on the CB, well within legal parameters then no worries. Track or Sport riding and it's the armoured Leather trousers.

It's very easy to get neurotic about protective gear. A protective mindset is definitely a good thing, but aggressively defensive riding is even better. There's lots of guys on this site who've motorcycled continuously from times before compulsory helmets and readily available specialist motorcycle protective gear, through to today's mega-flash, ultra-expensive, designer label must-have-because-I-won't be-cool-without-it Kangaroo hide one piece racing suit with built-in aircon. I dare say a pair of Draggin' Jeans would be better protection than any gear worn by a 1950s GP motorcyclist, or a MX or Trials rider from the '70s or'80s.

soon hopefully i will get some second hand one piece leathers for the track and long rides but i want some protection where i can go to the shops without those stupid people looking at me wierdly.

my idea was get the jeans, buy one of quazi's leather jackets and then later on get the other stuff (already have gloves and a helmet).
also i was thinking about using the leather jacket as just a jacket, you know, like a jersey or something or are motorbike leather jackets a bit too restricted for casual use?

They are fantastic as far as comfort goes!
My wife wears hers to work for casual friday wear.
I've found mine more comfortable than my everyday standard Jeans, they are on the warmer side though.
If you ride hard, you need leathers. If you simply commute, these would be fine.
I've heard that you'll be very sore if you come off, coz theres no impact protection.
I rate my draggins, and I'll wear them on the K6 when I'm out for a casual ride. They have their place!

The story in your 1st post of the rider being dragged behind that vehicle gave me the impression you were buying them for normal road rides, commuting, etc.

I still seen numerable riders around town wearing shorts, no gloves, etc...maybe they are of that generation Jim was speaking about? :msn-wink: Wear *some* kind of protection whenever you ride, that's what I try and practise...I didn't always!

I have a set of these and am very happy with them for "round town" riding (for any real distance I feel a bit "naked" in them and prefer my Cordura pants with hip and knee armour). The kevlar covers the thighs and knees as well as the butt. They are great for hot days but they are a bit heavier (and therefore hotter) than standard jeans.

Apparently you can get velcro on pads for the knees and hips. I do not have these so cannot attest to their comfort or otherwise.

The jeans themselves are a good fit, well made and comfortable to wear on the bike. They are cut extra long so if you have short legs like me you will need to get them shortened.

At $240 odd dollars they are not cheap but a whole lot cheaper and less painful than the plastic surgery that you will probably need if you have an off in standard jeans. I know there will be someone out there who will tell you he had a 150kmh off in his jeans and he survived just fine - ignore him. He is either a liar (the actual impact speed after braking was probably considerably less) or he landed on the grass. After more than 20 years in the rehabilitaion business I can assure you regular jeans will last about a metre on tarmac before you start to lose skin. And no it doesn't have to be a fast off - 40kmh+ will do just fine. Don't wear them on your bike!:nono:

Spend the money and get some Draggin Jeans!

Just the ramblings of Old Fart, for what it's worth......

19th November 2005, 21:18
I have recently bought a pair and find them very comfortable. Last summer it just got too hot in my cordura pants, and I am just not in to leather.
Apparently you can buy removable armour for knees and hips that just slip down inside. (might look into that sometime) But even without the armour they can save you a lot of grief. Consider a broken bone will heal in x number of weeks but the damage from severe grazing can take months - its like a 3rd degree burn - whole heaps of flesh can be grated away - not to mention the infections and skin grafts.

ild still be using them in 100kph+ roads (theres quite alot over here) and if i just went out for a little fun ild probally wear them, but covermyself in my motox gear (hip, knee, etc).
if i was going really far like auckland or taupo ild want to be as protected as posable, thus wanting the leather but that will be sometime later on.

I got the black chinos about a year ago. Haven't properly tested them in a crash (yet) but have worn them quite often. They're really comfortable on the bike and walking around with them, the kevlar is pretty good for deflecting wind chill and I can get away with using them as school uniform. Being made of normal fabric they can get really cold on a cold days riding and they do absorb water but they aren't designed to protect you from the weather anyway. They also look rather spiffing I must say

Interesting. I didn't know they did those - they seem to only be on the Australian and Canadian websites, not the US one. I thought they only did the jean style. Those ones look formal enough to wear to the office , which is my big hassle with leggings.

I might be in for a pair of those, if they do them to fit fat dwarfs. Did you get them locally or import them ?

Was talking to the Sawyers help yesterday and she said that the Shift ones ($169) only had a Kevlar 'weave' and not panels. 5% content and not 100% like the DJeans. Apparently they dont hold up too well after a few washes. She lost me a bit there...washing jeans, whats that about? :)

I got Draggin jeans not shifts, but i got the draggins cause the shifts were out of stock. I have looked pretty closely at shifts and i dont really believe they are worse or better than draggins. They actually have kevlar weaved into their fibres, and they are way more than 5% kevlar...they look pretty solid and you can tell up close on the inside most of the weave is kevlar and not denim. I would trust em with my ass as much as the dragin's/ Although shift is more a motorcross company i doubt they would put something out claiming it has a similar resistance as draggins, and then find your ass gets wiped over a couple of k's of bitumen road; look at the law suits they would get lol!! only one real way to find out i guess though...ive written my bike off its someone elses turn!!

I got talking to the supplier of the shift pants at the local and he offered me a pair for $150-00, upon hearing that , I should have grabbed them...

Hubby just crashed in a pair of Shifts. He held together remarkely well all things considered. If you want that jean feeling then you should be wearing Shifts or Draggins. Civi jeans will shred on contact whereas the Shifts and Draggins are made to take the brunt for you.

What?
21st November 2005, 05:17
If you want Draggin Jeans, buy them from the USA - even with their extortionate postage, they are still heaps cheaper than buying here or Aussie.

There are some alternatives to Draggin's too.
Shift do black and blue faded styles @ $179.00 inc.
Teknic have introduced kevlar jeans in regular and short leg sizes @ $149.00 inc.
Both available at AMPS.

Haven't heard of the Teknic kevlar jeans before...we will pop in and have a looksee.

Thanks for the tip.
We are replacing all our civi jeans with Kevlar jeans and it's the min that we ride in these days. They are so worth it and the same price as a pair of Levi's.

EDIT: The short leg sounds good too (being vertically challenged sucks when you know whatever you buy needs 3-4 inches cut off the bottom when you get home).

will probably hafta think seriously about safety and get myself something a bit more armoured than denim after coming over to nz an seeing you lot kitted up in full leathers for a trip to the local store  .....

but ... does any other female rider have problems with the cut of draggins? .. ie too large in the waist to the size of the hips? i have tried on several pairs and, when i try squatting in them, the waist pulls right down over my hips .....

without a belt [which i'd rather not wear] am afraid they'd come right off immediately if i did [come off, that is] ... leaving me more exposed [in all senses of the word] than if i'd just stuck with the denims ......... [and no - this is west australia - trust me, full leathers is OUT!]

Have to agree with winja here, have tested Draggins down the road and was very impressed. One word of advise thou, make sure they fit properly and that the kevlar sits in the right place. I've seen the results of the kevlar sitting too low on the knee and it ain't pretty.

has anyone seen these Teknik jeans in christchurch? (esp short leg styles...) I would dearly like to try some on

I ride a lot in leather jacket, boots and jeans (also gloves and helmet), because my leathers have no pockets, and one piece suit is heavy, hot to wear and generally not very practical round town.. commuting, down the shops, out for coffee etc. i think these jeans sound perfect.

I have both and I have crashed in the Shift's, I believe that the Draggins hold out better under extreme sliding conditions.
That said I also think the Shifts are a lot easier to wear for general use without melting anytime the temp goes over 19C!
I dont know if you are aware or not but you can now buy armour for your draggins as well, removable and quite good too. I imagine that the armour could be made to fit shifts just as easily? Still not as good as 'good leather' but ok for commuting or short trips.
