Today ManDownUnder competed in and completed his first ever triathlon (swim, cycle, run).

Not only did he finish, but he did it straight off the plane from Texas, landing at 0530 this morning.

WELL DONE NIGEL!

awwwwww shucks.

The bit that got missed was that I DID finish, it didn't kill me and then I went home and slept like the dead.

All just a set up to get a bad time that I'll beat (and feel good about) next time.

I've gotta admit there was some inspiration around, some lovely lycra clad butts to chase.

You could say I found the appropriate motivation...!

Actually I enjoyed the race till the uphill bit on the run... My legs didn't say no - they didn't say ANYTHING (and today I'm still walking around like I have a carrot up my arse, but this time I don't ACTUALLY have on up there!)

Team KB is needed me thiniks... there's the team events and the individual events...

Speaking of KB, while doing the cycle legs about a dozen largish road bikes shot past us. Were any of you lot out at Maraetai around 10:15 on Sunday? Beautiful day for it!

Yeah, I saw those bikes go past too. And a few while I was on the ride. I felt sorry for the motorcyclists and cagers along that stretch of road with several hundred cyclists weaving all over the place.

Not too sorry though...

Nicely done, MDU.

Now that Race One is under your belt, what time will you be shooting for on 4 December?

Congrats that Man (Down Under). A KB team? Oh yeah I can see it now...
And Dover attempts to hand off to Juzzer (who drops his beer) and in the process misses the corner and ends up over the fence in the paddock. Sarge comes running up smokes at the ready. Mikey is there supporting of course - being dragged off by Bykey Cop for throwing broken glass at the competitors. And Winja's just standing there shouting "LOUD NOISES"... Yep that'll be a competitive team!

OK, I'll be doing the du, not the tri... let's see, what's sprint distance, 20km bike (40 min), 5km run (25 min), so 1:05 plus transition time, I suppose. I hain't done one-a these thangs befo' so it's just a guess.

I suppose I really should go out with a stopwatch and GPS and time-trial myself beforehand.

lol. I think you do a run, then a ride, then a run don't you?

Better check the website: www.peoplestri.com

yeah, maybe this time I'll remember to time my splits in the race. Do you think I should wear a watch?

To be fair I don't know. I did 47:44 (STOP LAUGHING) this time around, and I don't know what improvements to expect. I don;t know what WOULD be a good improvement and what is just plain dreaming etc.

I want to come out of it signficantly better than last time - I'll not be jet lagged and not full of Texan food... so something good is as good as I can do.

I felt like a fat man running surrounded by all the bloody gazelles that have been doing it for years though... shite! There are some powerful cyclists out there too!

Yeah good call... If it's not competitve I will fit right in. It's actually fun... in a bloody exhausting kind of a way.

I have a feeling team MILF was there... in fact I know they were... (they just didn't know it...)

I did 12,699.1km in 19:47:44 and the first 19 hours were the hardest

The duathlon (http://www.peoplestri.com/default.asp?PageID=562) appears to be just ride-then-run. So I'll stick with a 1:05 target for the sprint distance.

Do you think I should wear a watch?

Do you have a waterproof one? I guess so. I'll just be wearing my Polar HR monitor and using the stopwatch function.

Nobody's laughing! Particularly not me, who finished in the bottom 15% of my division [edit: 2:09:55, NOW who's laughing eh...] at the Kerikeri half marathon on Saturday.

I take it that was the Try-A-Tri distance?

I'm a total triathlon n00b. As you see here, I won't even be *doing* the tri to start with. I haven't swum in more than a decade, and I want to get a bit of training in before I try to race in the water.

Talking of improvements, I got a 10bpm improvement in resting heart rate from a 3 week BodyO2 course (simulated altitude training, the Auckland office is in Mt Eden). It seems to make the biggest difference for untrained lumps like us who are still far from our genetic potential, and it might be a good way for you to ramp up your training gain rate. I recommend checking it out. Bit pricey, but hey, you only live once eh?

I used BodyO2 for rugby in my last season and it makes a huge difference. It's quite good for recovery too. They have a franchise dowm here too.

You're just technically embedded...you need to go with the flow...

Talk to MDU about swimming, he has the answer...

Trouble with wearing a watch is it doesn't fit well under the wetsuit which is...ahem...rather fitting you know...

Yeah 100m, 10km, 2km. Was quite good actually - my biuggest improvement over the last while has been with the swim... but then that was something I had the most to improve on. 100m would have killed me a month ago (in fact if memory serves... it damned near DID kill me), and now it's quite short, so I guess I can work on pace and survival.

Swimming in the wake of 100's of others isn't fun I'll tell you!

Yes, I can attest to the fact that swimming 100m nearly killed him a month ago. I was nearly about to call Speedmedic.

I was in the same position a year ago, it's all just practice...

Now, who wants to join me for a 24hour adventure race next April...?

I don;t believe I'm asking this ... but

where... when... gimme details...

WHAT HAVE I DONE?!?!?

MDU
edit - SM's going to be needed still... for Simon if/when he shows up at swimming next...

Simon says "Get in the pool and kill yourself over 10km"
Simon says now you're warmed up... let's do some more"

Just as well Simon's a nice guy... but I still think he deserves to be thrown in the pool to celebrate Christmas

Well, you did ask...

The ARC 24 Hour

The ARC 24 Hour has gained a reputation for being an honest 24 hour race and has often taken teams considerably longer. This year’s race is being designed so that all teams will finish between 22 and 26 hours. This will be achieved using rogaining principals.

The emphasis is on navigation and good teamwork as well as physical fitness.

Disciplines include:

Sea kayaking / Mountain Biking
• Hill, Bush and River running / Trekking
• Navigation and Rifle Shooting
• Rope work and mine exploration
• Mystery Activities (high adrenaline factor)

Interested?

Last one I did was a 12 hour race and it took me 17 hours 50 minutes...nonstop racing...team of four who complete the entire race together.

I think you know someone you can call.

She might manage to talk me into it, too, you never know.

You're just technically embedded...

Take *that* criticism up with Lance Armstrong.

Trouble with wearing a watch is it doesn't fit well under the wetsuit...

Your assistant hits the button when you cross the swim startline and hands you the watch to put on at bike transition.

Maybe into the diving pool... so he can't stand up so quickly

The frozen brown confectionary man speaks troof.

Gareth, the dude who owns the Chch franchise, is an old mate of mine. If any of you feel like doing a course, ping me, and I'll see if I can squeeze a deal out of him that applies at your location.

far canal... sounds hard but fun... I'll bring the .22 and some high velocity ammo for the shooting bit

And the last one sounds fun - although it can't be what I'm hoping for...
