..conversion.
(I'd originally put this under "sportbike tweaks & mods"...wrong place,i'm guessin').

My RF's derriere has always "un-fascinated" me;( :shake: ) I'm looking to put a gixxer tail on her. Any "not-so-tidy" gixxer tails around? (Don't really wanna go cutting up a pristine example...) Is there much difference in size between the various Gixxer models? Am open to suggestions re other tails tho'.

Most importantly, has anyone done this? Any tips?
Cheers!

i have something floating around that might help. will PM ya.
from memory the rf900 has a big-ass solid rear subframe compared to a gsxr one but where there's a will there's a way, pass the hammer 8-).
you'll need the subframe, plastic, undertray with rear light & possibly indicators, passenger pegs & hangers, seat/s, exhaust hanger. maybe modify the rear seat latch/cable also...probably forgot something but that's all i can think of at the mo. you'll lose a lot of that nice passenger comfort but hey! if they whinge they get can off & walk, lol.

And then instead of having a nice RF900 you'll instead have a bike that quite possibly looks like a POS?
Why noy sell the RF and buy a gixxer?

the POS scenario is summat i'd be keen to avoid, which is why i'd just be trialling some cosmetic tail mods... then if it don't work, i'm not left sitting on the tank.
i'd love a gixxer; always had an eye out for a 750, just that mine wouldn't be worth much to sell, so..
cheers for the tips/offer 750Y!

Ok, a brief update;

750Y got in touch and offered me a gixxer750 tail unit & sub-frame!
top dude; wouldn't let me pay him, so a few brewskies was the least i could do - even then i had to force him to take 'em....!
750Y - if i could give those green reppie boxes you'd def get a heap of 'em!

pulled my tail off last week, sat the new one on top; should (eventually) go on, gonna need a wee play with, but hey...that's the fun part.

just mostly wanted to thank 750Y for his huuuge help!

While the bike's been off the road, i've been playing around with this gixxer tail unit.

Had to hack some bits n pieces off, but it's starting to come together.

just need a gap filled at the rear, and a brake light, (for which i'm thinking a discreet row or two of LEDs)

Here's some pix, still work to be done as you can see...but i'm pretty stoked!

Gonna be interesting to see what Tash thinks of the new perch. Gixxers have never been as comfy as an rf for a passenger eh.

Glad you lot approve of how it's coming together!

Hopefully i should have her well sorted by the KB trackday.

MT - you would be entirely correct there... which is why i'm keeping the original seat (which really ain't that comfy either). It's looking like it'll fit w/o too much dicking around.

I've been offered a K4 tail light, another option to consider..

nice work bud, looks to be shaping up well & should make a refreshing change. You will no doubt turn a few heads & get some confused looks, that'll be a laugh. 8-)

Only imitating the Zen Master hisself...!

Back to the bike;
Gixser got in touch, we PM'd a bit, and a K4 Gixxer taillight turned up on my doorstep last week!!! Top geezer!
Again, he, like 750Y, didn't want any sort pecuniary reimbursment - I'm blown away by HDTboy, 750Y and Gixser's help/contributions!

So, the LED tail-light, (which looks mint! i'll get a photo up soon) is just sitting in there at the mo' - gonna need to create a bracket of some sort to "fill in" the empty space around it. But it'll look mean when it's done!

Watch this space...

The rear end is all bolted on; I made a bracket for the gixxer K4 LED light and then moved the indicators to sit just behind the number plate.

(the LED light looks proper cool!!)

I'm currently trying to source some scratched up tail sections.
Need to cut the front parts out (the parts right under the tank) to fit in the gap where my knees sit.

Then I'll glass the rear so that it's all one piece and meets the seat nicely.

Then paint the tail unit the gray of the front mudguard, but keeping a yellow stripe to 'link' front and back...

Something to do on a rainy day, innit?!

Got talking to a mate of a mate, asking his opinion on how to 'join' the two halves i had to make to fit it all on.

After some 'hory' (sp?) scenarios were discussed, he suggested making a mould of it - which would give me a nice, strong, sturdy unit. (turns out he's been 'glassing for 30odd years!)

I'd then permanently have a mould should i ever need to make another unit...

So, next time the weather packs in we'll be moulding!

The two rear sections are now bolted into where the original goes, joined by a steel plate at the rear and supported underneath by tidy little L brackets.

I found some original scuffed up side sections at a local wreckers (cheers Andersons!), trimmed them up and slotted them in, just in front of the tail sections.

Was hoping to paint it all metallic gray, but have run outta time for the trackday this Sat.

Here's some pics.

Now off to see Cajun and get the seat modded to fit.

Probly should've added that it's not done yet.

Still plan on tidying up the 'top-rear' part, so that it meets the seat (which i'd like to keep original).

Still plan on making a mould of it all too...eventually.
