Personally i will NEVER promise a car delivery time/date when the situation isn;t totally in my control--If theres work to be done then you are controlled by the mechanic/sparky and by his suppliers getting the parts on time etc.
Diddn't they offer ya a car to drive till your ones ready??
diddnt they call you to advise there was a delay??
If ya diddn't give em a deposit any contracts not worth the paper its written on.

well WINJA wot can I say. That particular dealer on that day dropped the ball -and it cost the dealership a sale and the salesman possibly a job.
If i sell a car with conditions attached and its time critical I make it 100% clear I cannot promise a delivery time/date. We resolve the issue there and then in the office. My customers pay a deposit and if I can't be certain I can meet their time expectations they are offered a drive car to stop them being inconvenienced.
You mentioned a "little dent' -So dingbusters would have been used and it sounds like it was messed up -The car then needs to go to a panelbeater and be fixed properly -1-3 days by the time its repaired, primed and painted.
The -If i service it will you buy it? line is NOT a lie its a QUESTION.
Again though -define a "full service" --is that ,plugs, oil, oil filter? or is it end to end of the car.--a full service takes at least half a day.

To all the car dealers out there...
Do you ask to see a drivers licence before a purchase of said motorcar happens???
Why I ask is because speaking with a dealer mate, he reports that a hell of a lot of people (including some of our new migrants) walk in and buy a car without having a drivers licence.
The culture of the dealers is "if I refuse to sell a vehicle then they will walk next door and purchase from the next dealer - and I loose a sale". ALL DEALERS should be adhering to this, but all it takes is one who dosen't and the whole law falls apart.
We keep complaining about the standards of kiwi driving, when a good percentage of the people on our roads shouldn't be on them in the first place.
SOLUTION? Better policing and better judges to enforce.
BONUS: less cars and congestion on roads, higher usage of public transport.
5c less in pocket now! (soon to be 10c...)

The dealers won't worry about losing your money but if you ever made them lose their money by doing such stuff they will stop at nothing to take that money back from you. It isn't worth it as more often than not the buisness wins. That's the way National and Labour have made it.
[EDIT] This doesn't include all dealers of course, only the many around that do seem to be raping you of your money anyway they can

Could be lots of valid reasons for someone without a license buying a car. No legal requirement for car buyer to have a licence.
Business owner, no licence himself, buys car to be driven by employee.
Someone pranged car, lost licence, buys new car, wife (or whoever) going to drive them round in it till they get their licence back
Youngster buying car (maye funded by Mum and Dad) as incentive to get licence (works, car sitting in garage makes kid real keen to pass test).
Or, even simpler, no licence, need car to learn. Friend will teach them once they have car . (Not saying friend teaching is a good idea, but it's not illegal)
Bottom line, salesman has to look at bottom line - and it's not a legal requirement for a car buyer to have a licence. Might be a bit dodgier if the salesman arranges insurance but.

Swoop, impossible to rego a car off it's MR2a, or even do a change of ownership without a current drivers licence. Although if the dealer was shonky they could register it into their own, or someone else's, name. But then the repucussions come back on that person. Even a current o/seas licence will do. I manage a high turnover yard in Chch, we see a lot of o/seas drivers and never have a problem with rego.
Alarumba, we do worry about losing a customers money, shit it's how we pay the bills. In our company we try to under promise and over deliver, but sometimes things happen. We always express to customers this, keep them up to date etc.
And one of the oldest sayings in the industry.
BUYERS ARE LIARS.
Honestly, people say car dealers are scum. 90% of the time when someone wants to trade their car it's because there is something wrong with it. But do they tell you when trading it. No. It's the old 'Nah mate, best one in town, never spent a dime on it'. How about after spending hours, maybe a couple of days negotiating with a client, you've qualified them, found the right car, reached a deal. Put them through to finance and what do you, bad credit, so bad that even if Bill Gates went on the deal with them it would still be declined. Believe me, the public make this game very challenging for us.
But all in all, there are a lot of decent customers out there that make the job worth it. Oh yeah, and the money.

22nd November 2005, 09:36
90%?
Is there a 10% tolerance?
That would mean that 100% might be scum but the top 10% are allowed to get away with it. We just don't know!
Is there some discretion so that sometimes a greater than 10% tolerance is allowed, then more than 100% of dealers would be scum.
What if the tolerance is reduced to 3% for Public Holidays? Would there be more honest car dealers during those times?
The issues should be debated!!!

No it isn't, I could register a vehicle into a false name right now.

You don't need a driver's licence to rego or transfer . You do need something that (purportedly) proves identity. Passport is accepted, various ID cards (as used in more totalitarian countries) will do, others probably depending on how hard you argue. Must have Name, date of Birth, and signature.
No requirement at all to prove address. Only problem with giving a completely false address is you won't get the papers they mail you.

Again more justification for your dealer lies. Maybe a lot of them have little or no mechanical knowledge. Some (most) people aren't into cars and motors and oil and shit. Many cars come from japan sans owners manuals (or with japanese ones) do the dealers bother to get a readable one? No.
Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.

Not justification, just balancing the arguement in this one sided debate. And in the ten yrs I've been involved in tis industry I have never once acted to decieve a customer, not once. hand on heart. But the number of times I've had it tried on me by the public, countless, every day in fact. But that doesn't affect my attitude, I still come to work hoping to do the best I can for my clients. The satisfaction you get from helping someone into their next vehicle makes the job worth it. I pride myself on my aftersales service, even helping clients when I'm not obliged to, because it makes good business sense.
See I'm in tis game for the long haul, I want to sell to sell again. There will always be liars, bad eggs if you will in any given industry. Just in this one it is very easy to make a lot of money. Even easier if you have no morales.

I put a thread up earlier this year about the help frosty gave my mum (ultimately me, in that I kept my sanity) in buying her car. In short he went sofar as to sell another dealers car and then deleted his commision so that my mum was able to afford it.
Toni gave both of us the impression that he actually liked the challenge of finding the right car for the right price. Quickly identified my mums back problem and tried an off the wall suggestion. My mum stopped stressing (WHO decides to buy a car in one afternoon on a friday in auckland ??) and I could relax.
I actually enjoyed driving the lexus back up north.
So I know one dealer I can trust
