.....that leaves TonyB
Well Tony won the Grovers choice.... in other words "Dumb arse of the day" :slap: Yeah TonyB missed the turn off up to the rally site and did a further 45km. I think he realised after the 3rd river crossing and ploughing the FZR up 4x4 tracks and reaching a DOC hut in the middle of a Glacier where he was able to view the Tasman sea from.... that perhaps he had ridden a tad too far

Ha! SLIGHT exaggeration there D:rofl:
OK, here's what REALLY happened.
Left Q-Town for Glenorchy with my mate Pete in tow. We were just behind Jimmie, though he didn't know we were there. The road to Glenorchy is a goodun, so I ended up passing Jimmie and freind and leaving them all a long way behind, they were cruising I was pushing a wee bit.

Got to Glenorchy, saw the sign for the rally. Underneath was a small orange arrow on a green background (this is important to remember) I turned right down the appropriate road. There was a big BMW tourer and some other bike just sitting in the middle of their lane. They has stopped because a horse was loose on the road ahead and it was very spooked. So I pulled up along side and we spent a good 10- 15mins waiting for the horse to settle (this is also important to remember). Eventually it ran up a driveway so we rolled forward cautiously. I was ahead. As I went past the driveway a BMW car came flying around the corner ahead. I gave him a very obvious signal to slow down. He ignored it and powered past the drive way spooking the horse even more. Three more cars came around the bend. They also ignored my signal, and after they went past the horse bolted out onto the road again, blocking off the road for the other two bikes. Now at this point I should have stopped and tried to stop anybody from going around the corner, but the thought never crossed my mind.

Now then. From here the rally site is maybe 10 or 15mins away. There were no bikes on the road between where I was and the turnoff. No one to follow (this is also important to remember) So I wobbled off down the road, having a great time. The sign at the ACTUAL turnoff was white with an orange arrow, and it was FEKING small. I missed it because I was lining up a car for a pass. I passed the car and blimbeled of along the road. Every now and again I actually passed a bike coming the other way- sweeet! I also saw the little green/ orange arrows. Eventually the road turned to gravel. I remembered hearing D say something about 12k's of gravel months ago, so i carried on.

Eventually I got to a small ford. I thought that was a little odd, as D is far too much of a pussy to take his bike through a ford. But i carried on, having an absolute ball on the hard packed gravel road, easily doing open road speeds, spinning her up etc. Went through a couple more fords. Got to a spot here there were a whole bunch of people and horses. As it turned out there was a green/ orange arrow pointing up the driveway there- didn't see it because of all the distractions.

Carried on, the road was getting a bit rougher in places, but could still manage 100 plus on the straights. Eventually got to a sign saying "Mount Aspiring National Park". Was now having very serious doubts, but I thought I'd carry on- if it wasn't up there I was having fun anyway, and the scenery was simply incredible. A couple more fords. There were cars about- people stopping to have a picnic etc. None of them even batted an eyelid at seeing a big road bike on this road, so dispite severe doubts I carried on. Got to a fairly nasty ford. "There is no fucking WAY the rally is over this ford" thought I. Then I imagined the taunting on KB- saying I was too much of a pussy to carry on to the rally. "Ahhh fuckit! Lets see were the road goes!" On the other side of the actually rather deep and narly (for road bike) ford, there was a doc hut! There were vehicles here too, but they were 4WDs... I followed the road for maybe 200m and it stopped- at the Dart River. The end of the road. So I got off, took my lid off, and admired the surrounds, which were incredible. A dude in a 4WD, who may well have known a bit about bikes rolled up, and looked at me as if I was mad. I grinned and laughed.

Then it dawned on me thet no one knew where I was. Shit!

So I headed back, just behind the 4WD. He went through the last ford. Hmmm, it really is rather deep! I waited for it to clear and then powered through. The direction was slightly against the flow, so that made a fair amount of water gush stright over the fairing while the bike bounced about on the big roacks below WAHOOOO! Great fun. Just as well the FZR doesn't have a genuine perrurised air box though- she prolly would have drowned as the waater would have gone in the air vents.

Once over the ford, I got stuck behind the 4WD for a bit. Then he pulled over to let me pass on some really twisty bits, and I blasted off and left him to it. Was going quite a bit quicker than on the trip up.

Got back to where the horses were, and could see a curtain sider and some tents on a hill up by the trees. "Gotta be the rally" Stopped by the gate. Sure enough the green arrow pointed up that way, so I took off up a rough dirt/ mud track. Got to the top. Oh dear. They were filming a commercial for a German chocolate company. Wrong bloody arrows!!!

So I hussled back towards Glenorchy. Fast. Thinking my mate Pete was probably having fits by now (correct). On the seal agin I saw two bikes with gear on going the other way. Full emergency brake. U turn. Drag race back to catch up with them. JUST managed to see them turn off at the right road. So I blasted up that, and BEHOLD! There was the rally. Very OBVIOUS it was from this road. Eh Rashika/ FlyingDutchMan.

Pulled up at the gate and asked if they had a biggest dumbarse prize, then explained why. And BEHOLD! I won the grovers choice trophy (my new avatar) and a wee prize. A go on the skippers canyon big swing thingamajig. $135 worth. Oh dear.

Fark! It was worse than I imagined, naked arse but that was a mission!!:slap:

Is it a gift or do you have work at it???

P.S. We all giggled as we saw you ride past!!!
(and you're the first Glenorchy Rally attender to approach Mt Aspiring National Park from the WEST while going there from Christchurch!)  :killingme

I entered Snipers' bike into the bike comp (Sniper - it was under duress - the others made me do it). But despite being the rattiest bike there, another Honda won (or is it lost?) which had a tatty seat. The owner never claimed the prize. If my bike wasn't so ratty that it's not even working, it would have cleaned up that award.

BTW Sniper - I had to stop about 4 times to do the mirror nuts up - they kept coming loose. Never lost any though.

BTW Sniper, you would have got the prize but FlyingDutchMan wouldn't let me drag your bike up and down the gravel road on its side behind my H-D and he wouldn't let me slash the shit out of your bike seat with me big " (Crocodile Dundee voiced: "Now that's what I call a knife") knife so it didn't end up quite rough enough for the prize..
See what you miss out on when you don't go to a rally yourself???

Great saga Tony. Top marks!!!!Nothing like getting off the beaten track eh? Sounds like you got to experience some nice scenery and interesting roads! I can fully relate cos I'm a member of a wee group known as 'the Stragglers'. Basically we take the long way round to any destination. Went from Auckland to Hamilton for a rally once and it took us 3 days to get there via Morrinsville and Tauranga! Had a ball getting there!!!:ride:

What??? We took off down the right road and just before a bridge stoppped to let a car and a few dirt bikes past. Kept going down the road which did progressively get worse and worse. Eventually we got a ford which I went straight through. I looked in the mirror and couldn't see Rashika anywhere. Fearing the she'd binned the buell in the ford I stopped and looked around. She'd decided not to go through the ford, but stopped to ask directions (who does that anyway?) from some people frolicking there.

Decided that it was wrong direction and went back. On the way back a few larger bikes passed us (see - we weren't the only ones to miss the turn off). We got there and the rally site was noticeable. We'd missed it on the way up because the small sign hapeened to be hidden by a SUV.

Just a warning to anyone with a CBR250: Old SD seems to have a "special" place for them in his heart. Just don't let him near it alone... it might not be unmolested when you come back to it.

Clean it? Nah I just went so fast all the dirt fell off . It was quite dirty - Dirt roads, fords, bug splatter, etc. I cleaned most of it off, except for the excess chain lube on the rear wheel. Did you notice I even lubed the chain?

Yep, lovely weekend in Central Otago. Great run up to Glenorchy, hadn't been up that way for a while, and it was my first time doing it on a bike. Rode like a granny all the way, and even slower on the way back with an off-colour pillion.

We slipped away back to Cromwell early on Sat evening - Mrs V was feeling decidedly unwell (too much sun and not enough alcohol I reckon). Sunburn - I stayed covered up most of the day, but forgot my ears - I now have blisters along the tops of both ears!

Great to meet the guys from up north, and other local guys not previously met - nice people. Sorry we didn't spend more time with you, we spent most of the weekend catching up with family, and letting Mrs V try out her new "toy" on those lovely roads around Cromwell.:scooter:

Next time we'll be more organised.:p

I wondered what happened to you and Mrs V. Trust she's feeling a bit better now though. It was a great weekend and good to meet all the Christchurch crowd at last. :yeah:

Phaedrus mate, where did you get to? I waited at Frankton as per plan but never saw you again so had a solo ride home.

you can blame that on my complete lack of navigation ability and bad memory. It was possibly in frankton where I was trying to remember where you wanted to meet, actually I think it's a small miracle that i even made it to the rally.

on the way back I realised I took a wrong turn somewhere when I didn't recognise the hills in the distance

Rather than turn on my small miracle device (gps) I decided there was no better way to learn to navagate than to get home from lost.

I was lucky enough to win a prize in the Bike show at the Rally - best japanese in show - unfortunately it wasn't best Jap Bike at the rally

Yeah Scummy would have got that easily eh Suzi.

What a great turn out and meeting of KB. Great ride down, and quite quick in places. I did enjoy the scenery Qtown to Glenorchy and so didn't notice TonyB. Great rally location, about 500 all up so smallish.

Woke, packed ans then saw it was 7am on Sunday so Cal and I got away early and met up with Mrs and Miss Cal in Qtown, missing the heavy rain. Fine from there. Chai latte in Cromill was SWEEEET. Passed the tin man (two arms intact) and cruised home- tacking in places across Mackenzie country. Sore bum from Ashburton. Great trip all round. No issues with bike, new tyre (they almost last for ever eh Jantar), or speed traps. Nice to meet some more names.

Photos:
1) Tarras on the way down.
2) KB Lodge (if you look real carefully you can see Tony under the far mountain).
3) Nice site for a rally.

A few other points that weren't noted. Great band... unusual song selection at times though...

Now, as was mentioned earlier a few other prizes were won by KB members:
SuzyQ's R6- best Jap, Rashikas XB12R- best American, D's tractor- best Italian. Quite impressive really. But a bit... odd. Wouldn't you say? It dawned on me riding home yesterday that there could be more to this than meets the eye. A conspiracy perhaps? Hmmm. Did any one mention that all three left the proceedings early in the evening to get some rest. I also seem to recall that the judges dissapeared for a while. Infact, the wet T comp was held VERY late- some time after the proud best bike winners had dissapeared. Is it possible that the judges were bribed in some way? Snipers bike (ridden by FlyingDutchMan) should have won the rat bike award, BUT FlyingDutchMan did NOT dissapear mysteriously. Draw from this what you will, but I suspect foul play... or would that be foreplay?:devil2: The judges certainly seemed upbeat when they returned

And speaking of the Wet T comp. It deserves a mention. The winner got $600 prize, and the rules were if they removed there shirts they were disqualified, so it was the first actual wet T comp I have seen. Never fear- they had a bare breasted comp later. Did I mention that the young lass who won the Wet T had a rare skill- by merely wiggling her shoulders she could get one jubblie rotating clockwise, and the other rotating counter clockwise:clap: Don't think it was practiced either. Very impressive!

Bloody typical.
You big city types come down here and proceed to destroy the place!!!

Why thank you guys :finger:

Notice Dangerous here, it appears that he's having a bit of a yoodle
but in fact he's removing his thermal liner. Now one might wonder why you would actually need to have the liner in the first place...

Really enjoyed catching up with so many KB members.
At this end of the country you read about the adventures of the northerners when they get together and wonder what it would be like. **sigh**
I had only ever met two before and half of those was Scumdog (the other was Zooter).

I was feeling a bit pissed off about the 888 and must have looked like I was riding like an idiot through the gorge when normally I only ride like a tosser, but it wasn't my fault honestly.
I think I've figured out the problem and hopefully I'll get a chance to try out my theory this weekend.
So I'm not quite so sulky now.

Luckily I had another Ducati that I'd prepared earlier so had no problem getting to the rally.

Got stuck at a Happy Hour that went on for about three before I caught up with most of the guys in the Pig & Whistle and ended up drinking with the Bike Mikes (who aren't actually KB members yet I understand) and playing pool against some hot European chicks (and whuppin' their arses - yeeeahh!).
Everyone else seemed to go to bed early - I dunno.

The next day I took my daughter to the Lake Hayes A&P show and didn't actually get to the rally site until after 7 - the sun was going down and it was getting cooold!

Anyway, good fun drinking & generally carousing until the bar shut and everyone went to bed and it proceeded to rain all night.
Woke up the next morning about 10.30 and we were just about the only tent left still up.

Ran into the Bike Mikes at the Glenorchy pub for brekky and then we went back to Arrowtown for a beer and split up for home.

Most enjoyable and I'm keen to catch up with you all again.

I, I, I LOVE you guys **sob**

What were their names, Karen and Fay?

Karen won the wet T but didn't win the bare breast as once her tits were exposed they were didn't look right (just a little large and droopy). Whereas Fay looked a little small in the wet T but was the clear winner for the bare breast.

I'll give one guess who was doing all the cheering :sherlock:
