Get planning now and just get here, you'll NEVER regret it I promise you - a lot of the lower South Island scenery is reminiscent (sp) of Arizona/Texas, especially in the summer time.
And the class of person you'll meet? Just THE best (as well as me&CB) and we won't make fun of your funny axcent!! Promise!

As for north, south, east, west it's just manmade bullshit - follow the lake around, ta can't miss it.

I'll second Scumdog's sentiments, you can be assured of a hearty welcome down here. Just do it!

No patches means no gang patches, I think we can get away with our not-too-conspicuous KB patches.

Last year they screwed up by picking the FIRST weekend in January for the rally, I got cunning and picked they'd go for the second weekend (yeah right!)

But NO, they picked the THIRD weekend - and I've got night shift - more chance of getting rid of aids than getting a night-shift off in early January!!:angry2:

Bugger, looks like it'll have to be Vincent County then. I don't like my chances of going to Woodstock. Depends on the other half plus its our wedding anniversary that weekend, a bike rally is not particulary romantic but then again I'm not a romantic.

Don't want to push her too hard to fast.

Looks to be about $220 for the ferry, if I don't care what time I depart/arrive wich I don't, $25 for the rally fee, and figure maybe $200 (over estimating to be certain) for round trip fuel. $485, Round up to five hundred for food. Can do it if I really try but wont be certain I can afford it till end of december.

Trust me I'll be trying. I miss doing long distance rides. Havn't been on one of decent size since my ride from Dallas to San Diego. Figure I put about $100 away from my next five checks I'll be good. But work cuts back on hours alot this time of year and I need to ake sure I can take care of my rent and food bills here before I put any money away. Also I wont be able to go the next two-three months without going to see Ms.Pillion.

I reckon it's more North - North West of Queenstown. First you go westish then Northish from Queenstown to find Glenorchy. I like to ride there via the West coast and Hasst. Usually leave home Friday morning and either camp some where on the way or arrive in the dark (done both). I have other friends who go straight there Friday and do Haast staying near Fox Glacier on the way home. It's easier for me to have Friday off work than Monday so I go Straight home Sunday.

There may be a little more accomodation in Queenstown, it is normally fully booked out by this time! I have booked a couple of rooms at Thomas's Hotel and they may have more rooms available - but you'd best be quick. Scumdog, Rashika, Dangerous adn 30utd will be in the rooms I have booked.
Here is the website to chek it out.

It looks like the Thomas is booked - well the cheap seats anyhow.

I have booked a bed in a dorm ($24) for the 13th at Pinewood Lodge, http://www.pinewood.co.nz/ ph 0800 746 396, 48 Hamilton Rd Queenstown. Will be on the lookout for the rowdy lot.

Dangerous and the Chch crew: are you travelling all the way to Qtown on the Friday? I will possibly be in the Geraldine area and travel with a mate (VFR750), but will probably see youall at some point on the way down. I am definitely going through the Mackenzie just for the scenery. Bit early to get organised I know, but if Sniper is going, he needs enuf lead time to get all the AA maps.

Yes and you should have tried the luge. We were in the area for a few days (sorry to not have contacted idb as we (the family) were tenting in the Arrowtown camp). Was snowing lightly at Coronet skifield carpark when there late Monday. It was cold and damp on the luge yesterday so that the brakes were somewhat non-operative. Young son (10) took the big dip a bit quick, shot across the middle of the next sweeper and stopped suddenly up the bank. Doesn't look like any lasting damage. With it being wet, we didnt manage to get to Macetown and split after lunch yesterday, arriving Chch 9:30. Back again in a week for the rally. Its gotta be nice by then.

I did a quick run around the SI between chrissie and new years - had a fantastic time, beautiful weather, not much traffic and no incidents. I'm still convinced Tekapo has a curse on my bike (my home built speedo died). The only downer on the 2100km trip was it rained all the way from the head of lake wanaka to arthurs pass :cold: and running out of petrol 10km from fox glacier in the rain was a real bummer (went from wanaka to chch in one day via the coast). My new boots (xmas prezzie to meself) stood up well in the rain - my feet were bone dry until just before hoki when the breathing action just couldn't keep up with the water running down my legs (RAIN water!). Did the crown range road as well - absolutely delightfull except for all the cars (boi racers galore). Looking forward to the trip to Paradise.

I'm not quite sure - that speedo of mine died (fixed now) near Tekapo. But at an conservative average of 5 revolutions per meter, that'll come out at around 10,500,000. So your 13 is pretty close to the mark. Its just mad.

Shame I missed you Jimmie.
I'm half a block from the camping ground & you had to walk past my place to get to the pub.
Another front swept up the lake today and it's raining again now. There'll be more snow falling on the mountains but it's supposed to clear by the weekend.

Went for a ride myself last Tuesday from here (obviously), over the Lindis, down the Waitaki to Dunedin.
Spent the night at the old Leviathan and was intending to go out and dazzle the chicks with my alcohol-fuelled repartee "....yeah, a Ducati.......a 888.....a 888..... a red one!.....actually I've got two.......aww I've seen about 225 on it but I reckon she'd be good for 270.....naah, it's not dangerous at all, ya just keep the throttle pinned if you get into trouble......etc" - but all the pubs were closed cos of the stat day thing!!!
Quiet night in with a bottle of Pinot and Sky.
Home over the top & through Middlemarch. Good weather the whole time.
Saved money, no headache or regrets and two days of excellent riding....aaaahhhhhh.....!
But some poor chicks sure missed out!

Probably won't need it now - found out that the oil filter plate o-ring was pinced, causing it to loose oil (about 1.3l left out of 2.7l). Oil helps with cooling - so it will explain why it got too hot. Also explains the smell - oil was landing on the exhaust, as well as the rear tyre  . Done full oil change (filter + oil + o-rings). Cleaning entire cooling system and will have to clean oil off rear tyre.

:( :crybaby:

The bike is still unhappy with me. I changed the oil, oil filter, o-ring, cleaned the entire cooling system (I found a blockage in it too!), checked the valve clearances (which were all good). Reassembled eerything and filled the cooling system up with water. It leaked from every single hose connection and o-ring connection :weep: . Went out and got some radiator sealer (I know its dodgy shit!), and used that. Appeared that all leaks stopped, so flushed that out and refilled with 1/4 gylcol and 3/4 water. Went for a spin around the block and the bike seemed to be running qute well. So went a bit futher - bike was still performing quite well. Stopped on side of road to observe for leakages - no water or oil coming out :D sweet I'm thinking. Got back on and noticed temp near redline, but once I'd moved 50m down the road it was in the middle (radiator works!). Excellent now to burn off into a 100km/h zone. Took off from the light redlining it, and the bike absolutely hauled arse something wicked - better than has for a long time. Hit 100km/h and cruised for a bit. Noticed tep getting very close to redline. I'm thinking maybe I should head towards home. Take the first turnoff & then the bike starts to run on 3 cylinders :( . Make it most of the way home and then decide to push it the last bit. Got home & it had cooled down quite well so I started it, and it ran quite nicely. Hmmm.... defintely a too hot issue then. Still got all the oil I put in there :2thumbsup . Thats one issue solved. Haven't checked water yet + don't want to. Suspect that there isn't a lot there. I'm pretty sure that the head gaskette is blown.
:doh::2guns: :angry2:

So to sum it up... The likelyhood of me getting down there is pretty slim, and the likelyhood if I do get down of me getting back is even worse! Imagine being stuck in paradise for the rest of your life!

I think the head gasket has shat its pants. I refilled the water (there was almost none), idled it for a bit topping the water up continously, and bubbles just kept coming out without the water level going down. Pretty sure this is combustions gases escaping into the water jacket. :crybaby:

BTW what time you guys plan on being at Cromwell? Me'n'Jantar could meet y'all there for a combined ride to Q'town through the gorge.

Or if going via Crown range from Wanaka what time would you be heading over from the Lindis - Tarras direction?

I guess Yaldhurst is as good as any other place. I think 9:30 would be a good time leave Yaldhurst and since Rashika is having her Buell serviced at Fairlie on Friday morning (her and Dangerous are leaving for Fairlie early) we would arrive at Fairlie between 11:00 and 11:30 (165km Yaldhurst to Fairlie).

Dangerous was talking about returning via the coast on Sunday if the weather was right, don't if he is still considering it? Can decide later anyway I guess.

Tent, bag, change of clothes, hygiene items and you're all set, and the most important thing - money.

Plan? plan? we don't need no stinkin' plans!!

So we don't need a plan and you ask what time we are going to be at x place? How does that work? ;)

My guess is that if we leave Chch at 9:30, meet D and R at Fairlie, then maybe 2:30 at Tarras (Yaldhurst - Tarras 425km).

The long range wether forecast (link (http://www.metvuw.com/forecast/forecast.php?type=rain&region=nzsi)) is looking semi-resonable too :Punk:

My mate Cal has just signed up to KB (has been real quiet so far) will be there also.

I am unsure when I will leave. Am thinking of getting away a little earlier than 9:30 from Chch, passing thru Fairlie (drop in to High Country MC), watching out for the reputedly titchy cop around Twizel, Lindis, Taras, icecream in Cromwell (first orchard on the left after the bridge into Cromwell make real fruit icecreams $3 but), Kawarau gorge, Q'town. Where is a good lunch spot? Be good to catch Scumdog & Jantar en route - should be able to recognise a GS/HD combo.

This is still looking like a great KB turnout. Roll on Friday.

Good ice-creams, but charging exceptionally high prices for summer fruit. Cheaper places on the Q'town road (before you get to the gorge).

well SD these days we have this thing called texting...you know, you write a wee message and it gets zapped to the other persons phone... but the best bit is that it waits till you are READY to accept it! Aint that cool?!

Yep, I'll meet up with Jantar & idb up the track a bit, we'll have lunch at Clyde (pronounced Clyde) then crank-up and cruise cautiously & consrvatively in constant convoy from Clyde to Cromill and contact collective codgers from Christchurch about our whereabouts.
Shitload of bikes stopping/passing through the Riviera of the South today, spoke to a few and all heading for Glenorchy (via Riverton? go figure!) and the weather is A1 - 24 degress, sunny and calm, hope it lasts!!

I've posted mine here, as has Virago, to accept responsibility for the receipt of despatches from the Northern Expedition Group Party on behalf of the Southern Expedition Group Party.

Cloudless day here in the afternoon today. I'm looking out the window now and there still isn't a cloud to be seen with a gentle breeze. It's prolly still about 17 degrees.

Done likewise - as have several others, seems we have a communications system that rivals NASA.

Looking good down here too, only about 8 degrees at the moment though!!

Hope to hit the trail at about 10-ish (or even earlier seeing as it's a nice day)

Trailering the bikes then riding part way. Hmm this sort of behavior normally gets the reaction of calling the trailer rider a poseur and soft. But you ride a Virago aswell so I'll let it slide lol.

Good on ya Fordy! I'll give you a ring shortly.

The FZR was treated to some new front brake pads and braided lines today (courtesy of my biz... I'm still destitute, the biz has stolen all my money so I thought I'd steal some back:shifty: ). The brakes actually WORK now! Quite a revalation really. Added a smidgeon more oil to the forks which has helped with the excessive dive under braking. So the bike is good to go.

Rang my mate Pete to see if he's going- he wasn't but he is now! He has a huuuuge tent, so I'll pass on Scumdogs generous offer and tent with someone who is definitely NOT dodgy.

Roll on Saturday:woohoo: As was said above- 222 posts before it even starts... can it possibly live up to the hype??

Just home from the Glenorchy, (massive turn-out from KBers and awards taken by at least 3 KBers at bike show:2thumbsup :woohoo: ) got a wet arse for the last 10km before home, very gusty wind (no, not the bake-beans type) had me all over the road at times.
Stopped once on the way home for fuel, 6.4 litres from Frankton (where various KBers parted company) to Roxburgh -- however far THAT is.

Will post more later when finished unpacking.

Finally home from Glenorchy Rally. Rained from Rally site to Queenstown. had a few other spots of rain along the way but nothing serious. I am not a fan of the wind and it got the better of me between cromwell and tekapo, but I survived to tell the tale. Special thanks to Tony B for sticking with me to make sure I was OK. Also the passing wave was appreciated - he knows what I mean!:headbang:
I was lucky enough to win a prize in the Bike show at the Rally - best japanese in show - unfortunately it wasn't best Jap Bike at the rally!!! But 30UTD's bike was in the show and I beat him ( he is not impressed!). I am sure Rashika and Dangerous and TonyB will all recount their prizewinning stories:psst:
Saturday's weather was stunning, the site was awesome as usuall and sitting in the sun with that awesome view was the best thing you could do on a sunny, hot saturday afternoon with a beer or other alcoholic beveridge:apint: .
It was great to meet Flying Dutchman, Jantar, IDB and to meet up again with Feral, Scumdog, ZZR, TonyB, Rashika, Dangerous, Jimmie. if I missed anyone out then I apologise, but I am dead on my feet and waiting for dinner before falling into bed! :zzzz:

Aw shucks SuzyQ, twernt nuthin' I could see the wind was making life difficult- thought someone should keep you company. Now see, what you really need is a biiig, heeeaaavy, slow steering, battleship of a bike. Then you carry minimal gear to keep the load height down. Easiest way to do this is mooch some tent space off someone else.. ooops, better not give all my secrets away:shutup:

Now people, just remember.... not everything you read on the internet is true...it could be a serious distortion of the truth... or a complete fabrication even...

Well what an excellant weekend!
As Suzi/SD/TonyB have said was a perfect trip down, just seem to have wind wherever we go lately...not too bad a problem especially on the way down, but coming home today it was a bit of a trial.
So friday was left about 9amish, 10 bikes in all.... Moi, Dangerous, Jimmie, ZZR, SuziQ, 30UTD, Flying Dutchman, Cal, plus 2 more nonKbrs. Started off coolish but fine...just the way i like it...and it got better by the minute. Beaut wide open roads, bugger all traffic and very few Mr Plods around.
Met up with Scumdog, Jantar, IDB and Virago & Mrs V at Cromwell...and after a few liquid refreshments to stop the dehydration we meandered off to Queenstown, for yet more refreshments ...along with some damn fine chocolate eh SuziQ? (That choc & chilli is STILL the chizz as far as I'm concerned!)
Saturday morning dawned clear and crisp...with a CAP C....shite it was cold. But we got some hot food on board and headed of to Glenorchy at the head of the lake. The road is pretty fine, few twisties and off camber corners and go nowhere rises, ending with a few nice we sweepers just before Glenorchy....where...yup you guessed.... MORE refreshments! had to stop along the way to take some pics of the gang, along with a few of my bike...pretty wee thing that she is

Oh yeah and we cleaned up in the bike show: had 6 Kb bikes in all entered and won 3 prizes, mine was best YANK bike....damn now thats twice its done it....waaaaay cool! :woohoo:
Dangerous can tell you all the rest of the gossip

We had a night on the town and headed off on sat to the rally. 5 of us from Te Anau went via Wiakaka, Heriot, Moa Flat, Ettrick , Cromwell, Wanaka, Crown Range, Queenstown, Glenorchy . I took my DR and gave the sport bikes a run for there money in the twisties. I have put pics on www.toddy.smugmug.com . Rumor is scummy was seen chatting up a blonde. Cheers Toddy

I was lucky enough to win a prize in the Bike show at the Rally - best japanese in show
And I....... cleaned up in the best European, soooooooo.... that leaves TonyB
Well Tony won the Grovers choice.... in other words "Dumb arse of the day" :slap: Yeah TonyB missed the turn off up to the rally site and did a further 45km. I think he realised after the 3rd river crossing and ploughing the FZR up 4x4 tracks and reaching a DOC hut in the middle of a Glacier where he was able to view the Tasman sea from.... that perhaps he had ridden a tad too far

KBer's that we meet up with at the rally were Phaedrus, HondaV2, The Preacher, Feral & Fordy, so great turn out and a awesome rally check out the scenery in Rashika's pic's talk about being in the middle of nowhere... ohhh na thats were TonyB was

I cant believe the wind Sat night bikes going over and tents being flooded... aye Scumdog :blip: Great band great company, great riding... whos in for the Woodstock in two weeks :2thumbsup

2 & 3) HOG POS for White Trash

5) ZZR broke the tin mans arm off, so the lads tryed to put it back on... in the end we all just did a runner as it looked like it was about to end up arse over albow.

What a bloody good weekend. Whats the Burt Munroe quote...if you could spend five minutes riding this motorcycle you'd experience more that most folks in a lifetime (If anyone has the exact quote let me know please).

Despite the prospect of rain on the west coast I got more wet and cold between Glenorchy and Queenstown, refuel at the Shell, defrost hands under driers, coffee, and the rest of the day was a complete blast - over the Crown Range to Wanaka-Haast-Kumara-Arthurs Pass-Home. In all 916.2 miles in two days; ragged, knackered, sore behind the knees, but that was the fuken ride of my life!

1. Bra fence, Crown Range.
2. Lake Wanaka
3. Road past Haast - look its lovely and dry!!
4. Further on the west coast
5. Fox Glacier
6. Waimak on the way back from Arthurs Pass

As well as losing a pair of glasses I also picked up a ticket at Hokitika. Oh well, do the crime yada yada. Considering that I had been treating between QT and Hokitika as a race track $300 is a cheap, bloody long and very scenic trackday

Awesome!

Throaty rumble it ain't!!

As the rest said, awsome ride, great company (I mean we were mostly strangers who only knew each other via the net yet just 'clicked' when we met and no attitude/dickhead problems) and a lot of shit talked - at times by other than my self!:msn-wink: - and a fair bit of sun-burn thrown around the group from sitting in our prestigous spot at the site watching the late arrivals, (what time DID you get there TonyB?) and drinking- and drinking more:beer: $5 a rtd made the beer better value.

A bit sad the pics don't do justice to my flash tassled jacket - the one the rest were so jealous of eh!:blah: but great pics from Rashika and the others to show off the great scenery - and more than one of the Scumdog-hog!!:niceone:

Well had a good time. Got sun burnt (even on the top of my head beyond the hairline too!). Snipers bike worked prefectly there and back, and never got hasseled by the Plods (apart from SD) despite the very noisy bike. The wind on the way back caused some concern at times, but nothing too hair raising.

I entered Snipers' bike into the bike comp (Sniper - it was under duress - the others made me do it). But despite being the rattiest bike there, another Honda won (or is it lost?) which had a tatty seat. The owner never claimed the prize. If my bike wasn't so ratty that it's not even working, it would have cleaned up that award.

BTW Sniper - I had to stop about 4 times to do the mirror nuts up - they kept coming loose. Never lost any though.
