If you can get nsr forks then great, but if you decide to go for forks from another bike you should get the entire front end including brakes, wheel etc.

About $350/pair a few weeks ago to get them done at a hard chroming place in Rotorua for the RG500. Give Lindsay knight(Knight m/c) in Pukekohe a ring if you want the details.
I have a pair of NSR forks here, probably about your vintage. I am not sure what they are like without digging them out. I got them with some other stuff (metamex swingarm, etc) - the previous owner was going to put them on a RD350LC. There are easier swaps, so I never did it.

Cheapo and maybe temporary fix is to wet-sand them with 600 wetordry paper (pull a long piece back and forth) until you can't feel any roughness, then spray on rust-killer acid (Warehouse), wash thoroughly and maybe sand some more, dry, clean with white spirits and then meths, and smear with West epoxy (rubber gloves). There should be a thin, even layer all over both tubes. Leave for 24 hours before using.
