View Full Version : RF900's are incredible

Cibby

Well

I was given the immense pleasure of riding on the back of the RF900 on monday on the way to work...

I just couldnt get over the smooth handling.. room of the back seat (I admit that dodgy thoughts had crossed my mind), the sexy design, that gorgeous red paint..

and well.

the vibrations in all the right places... :blip: :blip:

Just wish i knew someone who had one on a permanent basis that would take me for a ride more often...

any other opinions?

glad you liked it! comfy, fast, handles...just a bit heavy i guess, but i still think it's an underrated bike
i'm not too stoked on the 'back half' of it tho', lookin' to do "conversion" of sorts...
if you're ever down this way, the mrs & i could take you thru' some local twisties...

Very much an understated bike. Fantastic sport tourer, and I actually happen to like the back end - very distinctive.

Of course, if you are out riding with your mates at night, they tend to get a bit annoyed at getting blinded everytime you hit the picks, but at least all the cagers can see when you are braking.

emaN
23rd November 2005, 11:22
"distinctive" is a diplomatic way of putting it WRT :)
it's great for loading soft panniers onto; but it's just so......wide & fat!
but for it's purpose, sport-touring, it's wikkid!

Is this some cunning new tactic to sell bikes at Colemans?

I looked at one, I think it were before i bought the VTR, but I didn't like it enough. Sounded OK (had an aftermarket can), went well, but it just did nothing for me, and the ergos / finish weren't up to Honda standard.
In my opinion.

nearly 130kph.. scarey stuff ya know..

I got mine up to 255 (ish) at Puke and it was still climbing quite well but they made the mistake of making that bit of road too short...

The brakes came in handy at that point.

It'll do more than that now - I know how to ride it... (I was changing up FAR too early on the track)

when i was looking at bikes i condsidered an rf900, they are a nice bike, handle well and have a bit of pillon comfort, i just didnt like the look as much as the zx9r....luckilly the zx9r has a comfy pillon position too, and a fat seat with plenty of padding (so the mrs says) we did 250kms in the weekend and had no sore bits

TWAS good , specially the Tui's at puhoi pub

Just wish i knew someone who had one on a permanent basis that would take me for a ride more often...

Shame you didnt ask the same question @ the start of the year.. we had two. Bloody good bike for touring long distances but 'to keep up with the boys' on sundays rides, they needed a fair bit of work..... Back seat is room-aplenty, just ask Custard he fell asleep on more than 1 occasion (and not from riding too slow either...) and I would recommend this model to anyone who wants to get back in motorcycling from a long spell or anyone who wishes to get their 'misses' on the back. Plenty to hold onto and confidence inspiring............. 8/10

BTW Mine is the purple/yellow, not a common colour scheme - Canadian Import.

I dunno, you shoulda seen me trying to fuse the brake lever to the bars on Peak Rd.

My knuckles were white (under my gloves obviously) and I could hear the aluminium and rubber atoms squeezing past one another as I closed my eyes and puckered my starfish as the corner approached all too rapidly and the red whale still seemed to be accelerating!!

I had to back it off after that, the front brake was about as effective as a plea for peace from your local mosque.

If big bike is a sign of a small penis... RF riders are in a LOT of trouble
c'mon - go for it...

first of all.. Dover could fuck up a tricycle

Ok I’ve avoided this

I am a closet RF owner. It’s not on my bike sig list. I think they are ugly, esp the purple ones. Fortunately mine has the ghey yellow taken off.

I always knew I would end up owning one. For the money they are incredibly good.

The more I own it the more I like it.

Get Fucked (you know who you are)
[actually that isn’t aimed at anyone in particular but bound to annoy someone].

They are a sport tourer & for ten years old as good as I care for.

However here are the things wrong with them for the purpose:

Suspension too soft,----------- easily cured with new springs

Bars too low/ wrong angle -------- F1 Engineering bars

Don’t warm up properly -------- replace with warmer Thermostat

Pillion pegs too high-------------- Section pipe to lower & make some plates

Indicators too far forward to mount panniers-------- Move back onto packrack if fitted.

Fuel guage light pesimistic ----------- unsolder & reattach much lower + cut reserve pipe in half (85k on reserve is just silly)

All easy to sort & cheap.

What vibration you wangers?

oh yeah the Factorypro jet kit makes them carb real nice.

Interesting points you raise Dave.

My suspension doesn't feel soft. Maybe the springs have been done. I do notice after about an hour's riding that the back starts to lose its damping a bit and it gets a bit bouncy.

I haven't had a problem with the bars although the do force your hands to rotate towards the outside a bit so I can see how you'd mention that.

As for vibration there's a bit around 100-120km/hr (4,000-5500 rpm) which is a bit of a hassle but easily cured as Lou says.

The weight of the bike scared me a bit at first. After the FZR it felt like it fell into the corners and I found myself fighting the bike. But after a while I discovered it wasn't going to fall over and let the bike have its way.

You do need a bit of pushing on the bar to turn it tightly but hey, it weighs about 230 kgs so you expect that.

The more I have the RF the more I like it.

There are different models but they are all a little soft. My one was intended for some Italian 125 GP rider & his bulimic Japanese girlfriend.

I’m 75kg, my wife 60kg. When she got on I had to tilt the bike to the right to pick up the sidestand! Stiffer spring on the rear & cut down front springs stiffen it up & the bike rides higher on the softer part of the springs & doesn’t steer like a chopper.

Your shock oil is likely old & a reoil/regas would do wonders on the damping front.

Take mine for a ride sometime.

Umm, there's a reason for that Sarge:blink:

This has actually been a pretty good thread about a largely unsung bike. I did enjoy riding it and had the brakes been sharper (read: worked!!) and the speedo worked then I reckon for 6 large it would be good purchase!!

A bit heavy, but every now and then you've got to pork a fat lass to appreciate the shapely ones!!

Sheeeeit. I'm 100kgs. Damn winter (and not playing rugby anymore).

The fork oil is one of those "get around to it" jobs. Like the mess around the side of the garage.

Thanks for the advice on the back shock.

You should bring out the RF on a ride one day. But then again, if you brought out the YZF we could swap too ... ;)

BTW - is it possible to throw the GSXR1100 motor in or does the sidedraught Gixxer carb set up ruin everything?

 I may not be too fussy but there are some standards that not even The_Dover will slip below.

Unless the he-bitch promised to abolish all speed limits for motorcyclists and enforce one day per week of cage free roads.

I'd do it for the team, I love you guys, no, really, I do....

Mine cost 5 but needed new discs. With Galfer pads it stops real well, even the WOF guy commented.

Si, you're pushing it. Offer stands for RF.

Think the Water cooled 11 barrels may fit, but head for RF would need to be retained. Not really worth it unless you blew it up & GSXR11 parts are at a premium so a Wiseco or JE Bigbore would be easy route.

Si, you're pushing it. Offer stands for RF.

 I'd never mess with your baby Dave. Bloody nice bike but.

I got my RF for $4750.

It's had the front rotors replaced and Premier SS discs with Galfers pads.

TBH, I reckon the Tokico six-pots would probably be better than the Nissins.

But they are the same brakes as on the BlackBird so they can't be too bad.

I've always stopped in time.

Mine's in pretty good nick although it's been dropped. The rear subframe under the seat is out of true and inch or so. And the front fairing's been plastic welded. And it has a replacement windscreen. You can take your hands off the bars at 200 so it can't be too out of true.

Anyway I like it. And that's what counts. :2thumbsup

I'm surprised the forks aren't bent looking at your sig -poor thing, let it out of the box to play.

Can't think of a more capable reliable bike for the money.

I like my RF, its a bit of a heavyweight after my GSXR's but it gets along alright. Im pretty sure its a US model so I guess its down on the HP which one day I shall redress.
I got mine pretty cheap but have a few little things to do to it. Guy who put it together was even rougher than me. It taking a bit to sort everything out. Still its doing up to 350kms a week and if I could figure out why it feels so unstable cornering in the last couple weeks since I had a puncture fixed I will be happy. (I think it might be alignment or pressure)

I have an RF600RP (dead at the moment) and riding two up is so easy to do.

I took my friend's dad to Paeroa a few years ago and he's no lightweight. I hardly felt him on it and I'm a wee fella. It helped that he was an awesome pillion unlike one guy I took who kept leaning the wrong way forcing me to head butt his chest with my hood.

RFs a nice bike. I raced one a while back up to about 240 or so, an RF with a normal sized human on it can keep up with the mighty 9R with a fat bastard (me) on it so they're quick enough in my book.

Not that the 9R is all that fast I spose :(

Yep - they have few faults except their weight, but then they were never really touted as a race bike anyway. Bloody good value for money - shame they stopped making them
