Hi,
Just wondered if there is anyone out there who might be able to answer a few questions on commuting from Martinborough to Wellington on a bike?? Does anyone currently commute across the Rimutaka's on a daily basis? Is it do-able by motorbike?
Really like the idea of living in Martinborough but just am slightly concerned about the commute to Welllington, is it do-able on a daily basis by motorbike?
Cheers

Welcome to the site matt77.
I believe Richard who works at TSS (Lower Hutt) commutes from Masterton to Lower hutt everyday. I would pay him a visit (when its quite) and have a chat with him.

It would be a nice trip in good weather, but on those really windy, wet days, I'd be looking for an alternative!

Can always take the alternative route through Woodville. I wouldn't mind doing that everyday

Commuting over the Taka's would be the best way to unwind after a days work.
Summer.....Brilliant
Winter.....Shite (the hill will be closed during heavy snow)
You'd probally be caught out with crappy weather on occasion. I'd have a car as a backup during the 'off' months.

It's what KB'ers do to get to work. After you get the bike out of the garge.

IMHO, upside = cool stress reliever on the Takas. At least you'd have a chance to wear out the sides of the tyres, unlike many other commuters (myself incl) who only get a mway/residential commute.
Downside = wind, diesel slicks in wet, snow, heightened exposure to trucks/cars who don't understand KEEP LEFT. Also depends if you can tolerate the boredom of all that highway from U/Hutt to Wgtn. I'm guessing on the BMW you won't be tucked down goin for it, so it'll be a bloody long way!!

Chap on a K model BMW has been doing it for years - rain & shine
EDIT: Before you move to Mbro, you should rent for a week.
Totally different on weekdays - They let the locals roam the streets:weird:
